My God "young"....that's a while ago!

When I was five I had my tonsils out and they botched it an nearly killed me!

I was sent off to Hornsea to "convalesce" which was a crazy, and useless concept, back then and I was seriously unhappy for a whole month.

Went back (just me and mum, as my sister was much younger, and dad didn't do holidays).

We went to Hornsea for Christs sake, and at age only seven I knew it was sh!te!

We went a couple of times, and always seemed to have the crappiest caravan on the site.

The on site toilets were just shocking with stinking "Elsan" chemical toilets and sh!t on the walls and some drawings that I didn't understand!

Mum would say"do you want to go see the "marrionettes"/

This was state of the art entertainment back then.

Unfortunately they were not always working and when they were there was just to string puppets bouncing around on black string.

If they weren't working there was always the nearby experience of a model of a prison with the front removed (like a dolls house).

So you put in your penny and a clock struck six and a tiny figure went through the trap door to his death.

Fascinating stuff!

The other highlight was that a young girl drowned and I was badly upset by it.

Best thing was coming home on the train and, in those days there were compartments for eight people and then a corridor.

Mum was taking me to the toilet and there were two drunks fighting and covered in blood as at least one of them had a knife.

In a moment of heroism, and stupidity, my mum said "get out of the way you silly beggars".

And then people wonder why I grew up so screwed up......Laugh

North Wales. Abersoch and the surrounding areas.

I was talking to someone on here a few years about this, I believe they stayed in the Nefyn area.

Having being dragged to the delightfully picturesque resort of Hornsea several times myself during my formative years, I can endorse AP's description of this dump.

My over-riding memories of holidays spent there are of sliding down the sloping sea wall and ripping my new shorts and returning to the caravan with my arse hanging out and same arse being given a good tanning. Happy daysSad

Has it fell into the sea yet?

Scarborough in the mid fifties to mid sixties.

That's when I learnt at a tender age - only 5 or 6 - that 61 degrees F is 16 degrees C, cos it was always that and bl00dy cold.

But Scarborough is my love.  I've since been to California - on numerous occasions - Cruised the Great Barrier Reef, stayed in a very luxurious resort in the Maldives ...but ask me, can they beat the flat cold sands of the North Bay, well, ask me, can they better Scarborough?  They sure as fook can!

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe in Scarborough. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time; like tears in rain. Time to die.

Peasholm Park ... seaborne battles, explosions, fireworks.

Bang, flash, bang. Happy days ... and then ...

Indeed.

I think the naval battles still take place during the summer months, unless it was decided that they were offensive to some johnny foreigner or other.

Hi kenbo

Yup, that was me, Nefyn for about 6 years on the trot.

The Williams family moved into a statics caravan for the summer and rented their bungalow out.

The little town seemed like the coolest place on earth for the couple of weeks we were there and we could never understand it when the kids there said it was boring as feck Laugh

I thought it was you CITS. I remember googling the bungalow that you stayed in. Cool

We've still got a picture of Ty Coch hanging in our living room.

Was a beautiful place, should get to see it again at some point.

Everything seemed so different to us kids from Liverpool was early 80s and Mr Williams still went out getting rabbits and hares with his dogs, you'd find them hanging up in the outside bog Shocked

Only had 2 holidays as a kid before my parents split up , no holidays then until I started work.

Both were in St Ives and great memories.

Remember being on the beach one day when Concorde flew over.

Mainly Dorset, Sussex and Norfolk. Went on my first holiday abroad aged 13 with just my parents-  benefit of being the youngest Grin Corfu in the late 80s was beautiful and a lot of fun. Would certainly not go back and spoil the memories though. I imagine it's massively more built up.

I saw that naval battle when I was young, completely forgot about that, I'd never have remembered that until you mentioned it. It's come back to me, on a pond in a park, sunny day (your experience may differ Laugh)

Oh Scarborough......

My son came to take me, and grandson number one, to the sea side last year.

I sulked when he said we were going to Scarborough, as didn't rate it from previous experience.

Last time I went was '67 and right at the end of the season.
I went with a friend from our band, just on impulse and we went into a deserted bar.

Just about to drink up and hit the road and two attractive girls came in.

It transpired that they were organisers of the fan club of "The Bachelors" who were performing nearby.

One was the girlfriend of Dec Cluskey.

We ended up spending the night in their flat on Alma Square.

Next morning my car was soaking wet inside, and covered in leaves as we had left some windows open!

Anyway I digressed there!

We went to Scarborough, and to The North Bay, and I was seriously impressed.

The place was immaculate and the beach also was immaculate.

We went to "Peasholm Park" which again is superb, but just a shame that the Dragon Boats weren't available,
as they were preparing for  an evening concert.

We used to go on awesome holidays, my folks split in 1979 when I was 2. So I holidayed with both sets of grandparents twice a year, Butlins in Skeggy with one set and a caravan with the other in Skeggy aswell. Also  a two week holiday with my mum and stepdad in a caravan. Great days, looking back, absolutely brilliant. Both my grandfathers were miners and retired in the early 80s, after that upgraded caravans and trips to Spain, usually Lloret del mar or Majorca. We didnt worry about bombs on planes or migrants washing up on the beach back then either.

Ireland mainly, usually Dublin or Tullamore but also places like Galway and Tralee. In England it was the South coast, places like Brighton or Littlehampton.
