Smoking. Drinking in moderation may even benefit you, smoking always harms you, in many ways, and is always increasing the probability of cancer.
Report PatraTheCat • November 6, 2015 8:46 PM GMT
And in addition, drinking is way, way better.

Someone who drinks the average amount a drinker does is unlikely to die of it, someone who smokes the average amount a smoker does has a massively higher chance of ill effects or death.
Report JOCI Club • November 6, 2015 9:22 PM GMT

Report s.kenbo • November 6, 2015 9:49 PM GMT
I think a heavy drinker would be dead before a heavy smoker. Having said that most heavy drinkers smoke too.
Report ebulGery • November 6, 2015 10:04 PM GMT
Neither they are good for us, smoking probably, but I believe it should be peoples free choice
The taxes on both smoking and alcohol are now draconian and unfair
One only has to warn people of their lifestyle choices...not try to use compulsion

Report Just Checking • November 6, 2015 10:13 PM GMT
It's obviously smoking.

If you're including going to include everything to excess you might as well say "What's worst for you, Smoking or Eating Fat" - someone who eats fat all day will die young, but in of itself it's not bad for you in moderation. Booze won't kill you in moderation. Smoking on the other hand IS just bad for you, even in moderation.
Report Darlo Bantam • November 6, 2015 10:15 PM GMT
To physical health, smoking is much worse.

But drinking has significantly more impact on your mental health, and can impact on similar aspects of your life or those around you.
Report Just Checking • November 6, 2015 10:37 PM GMT
There's only one way to sort this out:

The forum buys me as much Moet & Chandon or Veuve Clicquot as I can drink, and also buys acey duey as many Regal King Size as he can smoke.

We'll both check back once a year to tell you if we're still alive.

How does that sound?
Report TheBetterBettor • November 6, 2015 10:59 PM GMT
If you go by the risk reward philosophy...sure people can get there daily fix by smoking 20 ciggies a day to get their 'high'....but try drinking 20 pints a day.

http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/risk/tobacco#heading-Zero

"Tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death in the world.[2] Tobacco smoking caused an estimated 101,000 deaths in the UK in 2010 - almost a fifth (18%) of all deaths from all causes.[3] It caused an estimated 43,000 cancer deaths in the UK in 2010 - more than a quarter (27%) of all cancer deaths.[2] Tobacco (both active smoking and environmental tobacco smoke) causes almost a fifth (19%) of all cancer cases in the UK each year.[1]"

I am not disagreeing with those figures just checking, but surely this is own peoples own choice??????
as long as they have been warned

I see no role for government in this

Also if one was a Tory(I am not) this clearly contradicts the idea of free market forces????????
Market Forces decide the price of tobacco, the tax should be the same as on all other items.

Although one can add a little to cover increased cost to the National Health service
In fact all taxes raised on tobacco and alcohol should go straight to the National Health service, we no right to use it for anything else.
Report ebulGery • November 6, 2015 11:55 PM GMT
If we did that we might cure cancer, which would be the perfect solution

Everyone can then smoke and drink to their hearts content.
Report Just Checking • November 7, 2015 12:05 AM GMT
ebulgery I agree with you, it's people's own choice. I'm a liberal, in the proper sense of the word, before people started using the moronic yank meaning of "socialist". If you harm other people (which smoking can) then there may be a place for controls, but if you want to smoke or drink yourself to death in your own home, your choice. As long as you are properly informed.

Though maybe if you go to the doctor and he tells you you're screwing your health and you keep at it, maybe the NHS support should be limited down the line, it's like health insurance not a guarantee.

I`ve known folk who smoked since they were 12 and lived well into their eighties. I`ve also known people who didn`t smoke or drink who died in their 50s. Smoking is certainly not a healthy habit and it will curtail one`s longevity.

Alcohol is a serious killer too, although statistics are much lower than smoke related deaths. 4 close friends of mine died from drink related illnesses when they were in their 40s.

Gambling is an unhealthy habit too. Stress kills and most gamblers suffer from stress. 3 very close friends of mine committed suicide in their twenties due to gambling.

Most serious illnesses are genetic imo but if I were asked to give young people 3 pieces of advice, it would be:

Don`t drink
Don`t smoke
Don`t gamble

Alcohol is cheap.

If you want to get drunk, you can probably do it for less than a fiver - couple of big bottles of cider.

Or, maybe less…

http://ampp3d.mirror.co.uk/2014/05/16/how-to-get-drunk-in-britain-for-1-99/

Loads of more expensive options if you want to drink quality alcoholic drinks…or require company!

Perhaps the answer is we do the above  MODERATION..it is the excess causes the problem

I do not see the point of giving everything just to live an ascetic lifestyle???????????????????????????

depends how you look at it

if you compare 1 drink unit with one cigarette

then quite clealy 20 cigs is better than 20 units a day as the drink will almost finish you off after 30 years.
whereas 5 units a day won't kill you whereas there si as small chane 5 cigs will after so many years

normally  ,smokers smoke more than drinkers drink

Interestingly, research shows that moderate drinkers live longer than teetotalers.

Saying one **** is like one unit is just arbitrary. Is one cigar one unit?

Someone smoking 20 a day every day would be considered a normal smoker, someone drinking 20 units a day would be a full on alcoholic.

Your probably right case

But other things cause long ones job, so I future no one sacked, I liked that one

Our partner walking out on us

People being killed in road accidents

etc,etc

what do you propose we ban all these??????????????????????????????????????
or tax them perhaps

People make their choices, life is not risk free
Reduce tax on alchohol and tobacco allow free market forces to govern price
This would help our society it generates more money
including more money for our health service enabling to work better

When I'm abroad and look at the booze prices in supermarkets and often the bars they are mostly far cheaper than here. And I mean western european countries not Romania. Yet some say we drink too much here because it's far too cheap and need to increase it?

You have to drink massive amounts of alcohol daily for decades for it to kill you.

My Grandfather for example was a chronic alcoholic for decades. When he died his liver was fine. Died of lung cancer. Smoker.

I've had two totally independent friends both by advised by doctors at just 22 and 19 respectively to curb their drinking otherwise they'd be either dead or their liver dead.
