Hollywood superstars Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese offered a helping hand to Mariah Carey's billionaire boyfriend James Packer as the Australian investor launched his new $3.2billion (£2bn or AUS$4.6bn) super casino in China yesterday.
The three screen icons - paid a reported $12million (£8m, AUS$17m) each just to be there - shared the stage with the power couple and Packer's billionaire friends as they opened the doors of the lavish 1,600 room resort in Macau - affectionately known as 'the Las Vegas of Asia'.
Complete with lagoon swimming pools in the 'Riverscape' water world, priceless artwork and a 130-metre high Ferris wheel suspended between the casino's two towers, the massive complex also features a 'Batman 4D Simulator' and its own arena, where some of the world's biggest names - including Madonna - will perform.

They say this place could overtake Las Vegas as the casino capital of the world.

Few things capture the poker world's attention more than the high-stakes cash games that take place in Macau. Could be up or down a million+ in the course of a day or week.

Professional poker player Tom "Durr" Dwan  lost his fortune in Macau, don't know it for fact but rumour has it he's broke (?). Dwan was  aggressive enough with his bankroll that it's not totally impossible he went on a bad run. He had a style that fluctuates a lot. You win big and lose big. So curious why he quit playing in Macau and now staying under the radar, although could be other reasons of course.

He was a world class player, and the fact he's not playing poker in public now certainly lends some credibility to the "broke" theory.

Macau didn’t really become a destination for gambling until 2004.  Since then every six months or so has seen the opening of the next big hotel. Much more expensive than Las Vegas, and gambling t/o in Macau much more than Las Vegas. Apparently about $600 billion is placed in bets in Macau every year—roughly the same as all the cash withdrawn from America's cash machines each year.

affectionately known as 'the Las Vegas of Asia' this could easily become a threat to Las Vegas because big gamblers from that part of the world more likely to go there now and not travel all the way to Las Vegas.

Its revenues already dwarf Vegas. When you visit Macau you realise how fooked Europe and USA is
