Don't know what's wrong but a sad song on the car radio can almost immobilise me lately. Hunkering down can otherwise be a thoroughly healthy experience, as I'm sure most on a gambling site would agree.
would have been crying except every time i hear it i remember the only fools and horses episode where some guy sings it so i will settle for crazy by Patsy Cline

So many and some wonderful songs already listed but a double recommendation for two very different but equally wonderful songs. So Sad The Song by the incomparable Gladys and Opposite by Biffy. Even a glass eye would be streaming and a dead dog would get up and howl from the pain of loss if it listened to I Wish I Were Blind by Springsteen.

In A Lonely Place features the all-important canine reference:
Warm like a dog `round your feet How I wish you were here with me now
Then there's some nonsense about hanging yourself, but it's that line about the dog which I always remember.

Another great shout from earlier in Both Sides Now but I refer the original. If we are going for great forgotten vocalists who shone briefly Show Me Heaven Maria McKee is a belter.

A song that always makes me cry, (I'm crying now)!

Already mentioned, but no doubt emotionally chargedAnd at sixty-five years oldMy mother, God rest her soulCouldn't understand why the only manShe had ever loved had been takenLeaving her to startWith a heart so badly brokenDespite encouragement from
That's like the where where you when you heard Kennedy or Lennon were shot or Elvis could squeeze that fat one out on the bog controller. I was laying behind the sofa with the ear phones on and The Edge came in with that riff and bang. Only really happened to me with with one other song which was Reel Around The Fountain which would be a bit left field for this discussion. Memories.

Music for a brimming heart on here, much I've never heard before. I'm a sucker for a half-spoken sad song. Endorse Shep and Honey. Here's a suggestion, in the same style, not clever but piercing

Levi Stubbs Tears by Billy Bragg. It might border on depressing rather than sad though.
Also 'The Home Front' from the same album.

I once spent the night in a police station cell after beating up a policeman ( he started it and no charges were pressed - perhaps because a former neighbour was working there as a pc ) I couldn't get the following song out of my head.

Alone again naturally is the pinnacle of sad songs for me, Father and Son also deserving of its mention imo.
But I was just listening to this (and reading the lyrics) and, whether it's because of tiredness or just that I'm getting soft(er) in my old age, this song just made me weep a bit.

Memory and songs is a funny thing, I just heard a song on the TV from an album I used to have. I looked up the album, saw a song title, heard the chorus in my head, then had a very vivid memory of having a bath with that playing in the next room years ago .

Whenever I hear anything from the 60s it normally evokes some fantastic memories I have of that time. Hey Jude for instance always reminds me of a party and a very nice girl I met at it.
