The design team behind the Bloodhound Super-Sonic Car has put its near-complete vehicle on show in London.
Some 8,000 people are expected to come and view it in Canary Wharf on Friday and Saturday.
Bloodhound has been built to smash the current land speed record of 763mph (1,228km/h) set by another British car, Thrust SSC, in 1997.
The new machine is due to start running next year on a special track that has been prepared for it in South Africa.
The aim at first will be to do 800mph (1,287km/h). The team wants to do this on 15 October, 2016.
But the goal eventually is to push the record above 1,000mph (1,610km/h). This could happen in 2017.
It has taken eight years of research, design and manufacturing to get to this stage.

Pointless.  Its not a car its a jet plane with the wings turned upside down to prevent lift.

The fella sitting in there whilst attempting the speeds noted is a very brave man. This is NOT an aeroplane (as some seem to think)! That is why it is built like a tank. It is destined to go way beyond where other 'cars' venture and the danger is immense. Shocked.

Good luck to the team...they've done it before. Its still a terrifying goal!

Sympathetic supported suicide.

Its a rocket with wheels designed not to take off.  Its no more a car than......

Seems a totally pointless exercise to me.

I bet they put Volkswagen in charge of regulating its emissions.

Surely, a 'rocket with wheels designed not to take off' is a rocket-powered car? How do you define 'car'?

This kind of venture is never pointless. There has always been intense competition between the nations of this world to be bigger, faster, better. It is what defines a nation's standing in the world. It goes back to the times when National Pride was important.

It would seem that is something which some of us have lost.  Sadly.
