... Vlaimr Nabokov is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential novelists of the twentieth century.

Lolita (1955) is his most famous novel, and often considered his finest work in English. It exhibits the love of intricate word play and synaesthetic detail that characterised all his works. The novel was ranked fourth in the list of the Modern Library 100 Best Novels.

The question is... after picking a copy up for 20p at a boot sale this morning, if read the thing in a public place, e.g. outside on a sunny Sunday afternoon at a boozer without wrapping the cover in brown paper, am I safe from the paediatrician-hating mob? Plain

I bought an Irvine Welsh at a Charity shop for 50p & asked the lady for a carrier for me to take it home in. She looked puzzled until she saw that the cover was a bright pink colour with "Porno" on it in big letters Blush

I was reading an Iain Banks book on the tube one day and noticed the lady next to me sort of browsing over.

I was on an even numbered page which was all quite innocent and was horrified when I got to the odd numbered next page which she had been looking at which involved some bloke being attacked, tied-up and having a large d1ldo inserted forcefully up his tradesman's.... woman must have thought I was a right perve. Lived with a girl back in the 1980s who loved the book. All I had to do was whisper the "light of my life, fire of my loins, my sin, my soul" line and she'd do all sorts of things.

The odd thing was that she was the same age as me, yet when, 20 years later, I found myself living with another bird, who was 10 years younger than me, she reckoned the book was disgusting and should be banned. Not that she'd read it, of course.

Women, eh?
