The managing editor of The Sun has defended publishing footage showing the Queen performing a Nazi salute.

Stig Abell said that "this is a matter of national and public interest to discuss".

In the newspaper, it carries a picture from the film, and carries the headline: 'Their Royal Heilinesses'.


Reacting, Stig Abell said: "I think what we have done is put in the public domain an important piece of social history.

"The headline factually describes what's in the picture," he added.

Blatant fetlock doffing if you blindly assume this family can just do no wrong. People forget this family's German roots and the strong feelings of empathy to nazism amongst the higher echelons of British society, and across the wider world, in the 1930s. Anti communism for starters was a motive for many.

Nazis also transformed Germany from a broke state into a thriving country of growth with full employement. Remember there were a lot of ideaologies at this time like Communism, Facism, Capitalism that were vying to be the most succesful. In many ways Nazism was the most succesful of this period but only in hindsight did we realise the horrors it brought with it. There is nothing wrong with the picture but everything wrong with this rag newspaper publishing to gain a few extra sales.

It's mentioned in books like the West End Front. After Dunkirk everybody in the world thought Britain had lost the war.
