Bin collections in south Cumbria are due to change following a project to "optimise" collection rounds.

A study for South Lakeland District Council examined details, including types of wagons, the lengths of routes, and the width of streets.

It also took into account how many right turns vehicles made, as these cause them to be delayed at junctions.

The council said the £35,000 cost of the research would be offset by savings of £40,000 a year.

Changes, which include different collection days for 65% of households, will come into effect in the autumn.

BBC Cumbria television news page says £350,000

Perhaps they should ask their logistics manager what they pay him for instead.

This sort of analysis started with the parcel couriers, UPS, in the United States (where of course, it is left turns that are the problem).

The subtle difference between left and right.

It was 2009 when I last worked at Royal Ascot.

I was working with Studyform and others, who got there first.

I got from Norfolk to Virginia Water in just over 2 hours, it was about 12-30 p.m.

I phoned to say where I was, and that traffic wasn't moving, and asked where the bookies car park was?

Studyform's instruction was to go past the course entrance and take the next road on the left.

It was discovered much later that he didn't enter Ascot High Street from the same end as me. ShockedShocked

By the time I got past the entrance, I had actually spent 45 minutes parked in the traffic near the road I was supposed to turn down.

Seeing the amount of traffic ahead and that the next left wasn't a car park, I did a 3 point turn in the middle of the High Street, outside the entrance, had an argument with a w@nker in a 4x4 who tried to get past me while I was turning, and then got down the right road.

Only for all traffic to come to a standstill as The Queen was on the footbridge to the course. A cop on a motorcycle said all traffic is stopped for a 5 miles radius when she's about to walk across the bridge.

Once she was over the bridge, motorcycle cops all went to lunch, and a traffic free-for-all began. I gave up and went in via the coach park, straight out the other side and parked next to the vets ambulance, along with a couple of traffic cops in a car.

By the time I got on course and to the joint, the first race had just finished.Sad

All because of left instead of right, it took me two facking hours to get on the course.

I have not worked at Royal Ascot since, far too much aggravation and traffic, for me.

This reminded me of an anomaly that exists in Edinburgh.
Driving south down Lothian road (at the Fountainbridge area) there is a no left turn sign yet you can turn right coming from the other direction.
I've never been able to fathom out the logistics of that.

aka - I think it's to do with the Bus lane which continues south down Lothian Rd

Ah right. I never thought of that. Thanks.

I would imagine that roads have changed now, but years ago, if you came along London Wall, you could't turn left into Moorgate at the traffic lights.

You had to go straight over, take the next left, then 2nd left, passing Finsbury Square, bunk across a lane and turn right at the lights into the main road.

There were no cameras back then, so if you were nippy and no police were about you'd get away with it.

I was sitting a few cars behind a 40 footer who tried to turn left, and as he swung out, the car he blocked off coming towards him was a police car.

Well nicked. Laugh
