Alright it is the guardian and they usually have an agenda, and are as bad as any newspaper when it comes their elaborate use of statistics. but... UK; Terrorism. France: Islam and Terrorism Germany: Everything, particularly the economy. Poland: Russia Italy: Immigration, the economy and unemployment and Terrorism Spain: Terrorism Have to say I barely worry about terrorism at all. The IRA scared me more than these stone age w@nkers. And the IRA didn’t scare me.
bullsh1t. Surprised to see that the germans are apparently famous for their angst ridden nature. Hadn't heard that before, if it's true what is the point in being so rich and successful if you're constantly scared and worrying.

Angst is a German word, rob. It'd be more surprising if German-speakers didn't feel it.
Germany was still divided when I lived out there, but there was always an undercurrent of neurosis. Fear of being late, inability to accept a mistake... I remember being confronted one day by the headmaster of the school in which I was teaching - he was in a state of near hysteria because someone had discovered I hadn't been tested for TB. As I'd been teaching there for about 6 months at that time, you would have thought it was no longer an issue, but no. I had to leave the building immediately and find a doctor who could give me the necessary certificate.
They do get consumed by health scares. You saw the same hysteria in the German press at the time of mad cow disease. They honestly believed the scientific evidence from leading professors that literally millions of people would soon be dying annually. And don't get me started on the Klimakatastroph...

I wonder if Cath, of Swine Flu(Spreading) fame was German?

I had to stop in dusseldorf on my way to japan a few year's back. It was a shambles. Was supposed to be there for a few hours but was there for 48 hours because of bloody Lufthansa's general incompetence. They even tried to get out of paying for my hotel on the second night. So my experience of them was that they were late and did make mistakes. Have been a couple of times but not a country I have any desire to return too.

Sobald auf der Welt etwas Schlimmes passiert, geht in Deutschland eine Debatte los, die sich schnell nur noch um unsere nationale Befindlichkeit dreht.
The anxiety of Germans knows no borders
As soon as anything bad happens in the world a debate starts up in Germany which quickly revolves solely around its effect on us as a nation.
...
Als vor einem Jahrzehnt England vom Rinderwahn heimgesucht wurde, reagierten die Deutschen panischer als die Briten. Obwohl dort Zehntausende Tiere erkrankten und hier der große Ausbruch ausblieb.
When England was plagued by mad-cow disease a decade ago the Germans reacted with more panic than the British. even though tens of thousands of animals were affected there, while no large outbreak occurred here.
Rob: I've always insisted Germany is no different from the UK in that public transport is late and life is plagued by the same annoyances and inefficiencies we experience here, along with arrogant attitudes on the part of those responsible. The difference is that we accept that on balance we'd rather have the freedom that comes with living in a country where the trains don't run on time. There's something in the German national attitude that has trouble accepting that trade-off in my experience.
Kathzweiundzwanzig was a regular in the Comments sections of German websites at the time of BSE.Here's an article from the prestigious Hamburg paper Die Welt:http://www.welt.de/debatte/kolumnen/Maxeiner-und-Miersch/article13539083/Die-Angst-der-Deuts
There is a recent groundswell of opinion over here I have noticed of putting the germans on a pedestal, which always makes me suspicious. Like any problem in England, let's see what the krauts do and copy them, fk that. The guardian is always doing that, oh a train was late - what do the germans do. Snow closes down airport - what do the germans do? House prices are too expensive - we should all be renting like the Germans. Though I do admire their approach to football. But nowhere's perfect. Would like to see a few more german comedians over here, I like that Henning wehn.
Tbh the reason I've little inclination to visit is because it isn't particularly cheap, or exotic and it isn't the mediterranean and we don't play cricket there - which leaves about a hundred countries I rather would visit before I get to Germany on the list. I'm sure there is fascinating scenery and places and cuisine there like there is anywhere mind.

Capitulating to the snow: the railway's advice is not to travel
Rails covered in snow, overhead cables iced up, and all that in the middle of the pre-Christmas travel period: German Rail is clearly hopelessly overwhelmed by winter weather. The company recommends all travellers to avoid all but the most urgently necessary journeys - and slows down the speed of many trains.

Never mind. There's always the super-efficient Lufthansa to turn to:
Berlin - Ja was denn nun?
Berlin - So what to do now then? Take the plane or the train? Many passengers in Germany simply don't know any longer how they're supposed to get from A to B. With massive problems at the airports on Sunday morning Lufthansa recommended those travelling on internal routes to switch to the railway. In Frankfurt nearly 500 flights were cancelled on Sunday morning alone, with the runways having to be continually cleared.
