In Greece where democracy was invented there were no political parties.
You could stand as someone with strong opinions. get voted on your own beliefs. Once in parliament when a bill to be voted on, there would be no forced allegiances to Tory or Labour. Only your own conscience and what your constituents would want. you could vote a prime minister in by ballot. He would be selected by the mp's.
the way they have it now.. you vote red or blue. and if you belong to either team a three line whip keeps you under the thumb of the party.
Jeeezzzzus, I thought I was reading something from the Green loonie manifesto.
Your belief about Greek democracy is infantile at best. Athenian democracy the first "democracy" only allowed male men to vote, which meant that between 30 to 50,000 from a population of 300,000 were entitled to vote and thus control the entire population, so it was in effect minoraty rule!!!!
This is just one of the things that modern democracy should mean.... Democracy implies that the man must take the responsibility for choosing his rulers and representatives, and for the maintenance of his own 'rights' against the possible and probable encroachments of the government which he has sanctioned to act for him in public matters. [Ezra Pound, "ABC of Economics," 1933]
Do you believe we are getting the above??
Did anyone here vote for any member of the house of Lords???? we are not living in a true democracy and we never have.

Democracy can only work over short periods of time. It contains the fatal flaw of allowing everyone to vote. This if given time inevitably means chaos and destruction. Democracy should instead be an ideal, a way of looking at the world and an attempt to live by these ideals. Democracy must be something that exists like a mathematical formula, it is there and cannot be voted on.
