Used to think the Oscar voters would never be able to erase the shame of giving all those awards to TITANIC, but they outdid themselves with Forrest Gump. There must have been a pile of dross out that year. It's painful to watch.

Cobblaz. How did you think that Titanic was the worst until Forrest Gump "outdid" it when Titanic was released in 1997 and Forrest Gump in 1994.

Wasn't Shawshank Redemption out the same year as Forrest Gump and was overlooked for any awards? I though Shawshank was a simple yet brilliant film. But it didn't have Tom Hanks as the lead role.

Shawshank was a flop when it was first released, I remember reading that on here!

FG was a great film but not one I'd be too interested in watching again, though I have watched it many times.

I concur with the OP. An horrendous film and it just reflects peoples lack of expectation that it is popular with anyone.

Yep I wrote that Kenbo, as I wrote before Shawshank is a popular film all the more remarkable because 98% of people that have seen it that like it never saw it on the big screen.

Shawshank's much more worthy of an Oscar though imo

FG is a good film. I watched it when it was on again recently and I've seen it a few times before.

Surprisingly it's only this recent time I realised his son in it is the same actor as the kid in The 6th Sense (a fantastic film).
