This has annoyed me for a while.

Eggheads. Your'e team turns up. You slaughter the eggheads but because some team got spawny the show before you walk away with a grand. 200 quid each.

Pointless. Again you are completely depending on luck as to whether the jackpot is worth winning. One day it's a grand the next it's fifteen! This cannot be fair.

Why don't they make it a round 5 grand or so?

I agree, prefer the chase.
Report jed.davison • January 21, 2015 5:28 PM GMT
They budget for £1k an episode. Any more, and I would think they would have to answer questions about the legitimacy of giving licence-payers' money in such amounts.

As it is, both programmes are dross of the worst order and another abuse of their charter.
Report pumphol. • January 21, 2015 6:46 PM GMT
Do you like any quizzes ?
Report pumphol. • January 21, 2015 6:50 PM GMT
Because you don't like them they are an abuse of the BBC charter, these types of programmes cost less to make per air time  than many other shows such as period dramas.
Report Emden • January 21, 2015 7:16 PM GMT
On pointless you will get Armstrong asking the 2 winning contestants what are they going to spend the grand winnings on? - a monkey a piece FFS for embarrasing yourself on national tv

They should say a good pi$$ up and takeaway - that would shut the smug, upperclass turkey up
Report BARROWBOY • January 21, 2015 7:30 PM GMT
pointless must be so easy to fix regarding the jackpot, who's to say how many people actually answered these questions as reported
Report BARROWBOY • January 21, 2015 7:32 PM GMT
having said that I get the impression that most contestants go on for a day in the studio rather than the prize, you went on there pumpy did you not?
Report Emden • January 21, 2015 7:46 PM GMT
and on pointless you get contestants saying: sport / film and TV / countries (flags, capitals etc) is not my thing.

Being as 90% of all questions seem to revolve around these 3 subjects (or derivatives of), it may have been a good idea to have genned up before going on .......
Report Clerkmore • January 21, 2015 7:50 PM GMT
I used to watch Pointless but stopped because somebody compiling the questions is obsessed with films. I suspect it is Richard Osman. The Chase for me now.
Report akabula • January 22, 2015 12:17 AM GMT
The chase is different class.

I have always taken it as a day out, or in the case of Pointless  it was two as we were not used on the first day but is one of the better quizzes from a playing prospectus, some quizzes have a  longer shelf life than others, its quite possible The Chase will out last Pointless in my opinion.

In answer to your question pumphol, I don't have anything against quizzes per se, and I quite like University Challenge and Mastermind, but I find the spectacle of people chasing money on TV unedifying and I have a long-term grievance with the BBC.

No disgrace losing to Kevin Ashman, he is an absolute machine. Should have picked Judith. Laugh
Report pumphol. • January 22, 2015 2:03 PM GMT
Just to point out Kevin was the nicest person you could wish to meet, though this was all obviously before he won mastermind the world quiz championship & before he was infected by CJ.
My guess is he is still the same bloke I met in the early 90's
Report SlippyBlue • January 22, 2015 2:21 PM GMT
I could never get into Pointless personally and that odious tool CJ put me off Eggheads. I do watch The Chase sometimes though if there is no racing on. I'm still in shock though pumps that you thought the base shape of a pyramid was a triangle Silly

That's poor, that is.

Totally agree, along with not knowing what CV stood for, but your mind goes blank on occasions & from 22 quiz shows that's about my only dismal failures, saying that I never profess to being a mastermind, hence I am nowhere near good enough to apply for said show but I have had some memorable days out & the odd smallish win.
Report Jack Hacksaw • January 22, 2015 4:36 PM GMT
Having watched a few Masterminds recently I don't think the standards are that high.  Choose a decent specialist subject and bob's your uncle.
Report jed.davison • January 22, 2015 8:26 PM GMT
Only joking pumpy, as long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters. I like to think my knowledge is better than most, but you never know whether you'll be able to dredge it up when put on the spot.

And Jack, I have thought about this - my take on it is that as one gets older, one's general knowledge improves, so a set of questions that you once might have found challenging can be quite easy. I've always thought I'd choose the history of Olympic Track and Field as my specialist subject, but that's quite a broad choice, maybe it would be easier to narrow the scope of one's choice.
Report pumphol. • January 22, 2015 9:03 PM GMT
Jed my specialised subject would be Modern Olympic Games 1896 - 1936

Pumphol - that answer about the base of a pyramid which has been mentioned by a few on here isn't as stupid as everyone thinks...of course that's a shape, so why is it incorrect if that's referred to as a pyramid when it IS a tetrahedron of some description? Confused

Anyhow...good luck to your squire as you've been bold enough to expose yourself on here Devil - maybe I should've used the word 'unmasked' instead as I much prefer to go for the jugular with people on here armed with the equanimity of convenient anonymity, so hats off to you sir as you're braver/bolder than I am Wink

That'd be just my luck if I ever found the gonads to go on a quiz show to have to contend with Kevin Ashman!
As I'm sure you know better than I do, it's all about the craic of a good day out Happy

That said, however tempted and urged on I was by others, I never ONCE even made a call to get on WWTBAM as I would undoubtedly have gone home with a grand (and been distraught) because I'm an innate gambler and less than £32K (I'd be compelled to roll the dice at £16K as that amount wouldn't have been life-changing) would have absolutely crippled me mentally considering that many imbeciles have touched lucky and walked away with massive paydays and I'm convinced it's all about luck of the draw - I'd get ransacked on questions for under a grand that EVERYONE else knows and use valuable lifelines too early or at best get a stinker of a £16K question which I didn't have the slightest clue about (concerning Emmerdale or Hollyoaks) that takes out all options of help!

PS - continuing from your conspiracy about the strongest players being the reserves on Eggheads instead of the anchors, one of the smartest people I've ever met failed his audition for 15/1 many years ago (obviously because his face didn't fit) even though he got 7 out of 10 questions (I think) in his audition and the ones he failed on were extremely difficult in wanting precise historical dates and not bellend questions about soaps, pop-music etc.

PPS - 22 TV appearances on quiz shows...what other shows have you been on?
Report Navel-Gazer • January 23, 2015 12:57 AM GMT
PS - I'm juiced up tonight so I've only just realised that a pyramid with a square base has FIVE surfaces, so it's not a tetrahedron...what a bellend! Sad

That said, what constitutes a pyramid?
I had to check that up and I found:

A polyhedron having a polygonal base and triangular sides with a common vertex
A construction in the shape of a pyramid, usually with a square or rectangular base

I hate anything to do with shapes Crazy
Report naydam • January 23, 2015 12:59 AM GMT

Sorry 'bout that. Couldn't resist.  Plain

First quiz I was on was 15-1 back in 1990. out first round, a feat I repeated 12 years later Cry
Plenty of quizzes that lasted one series Like The Great Pretender with Chris Tarrant to well known ones like Big Break.
The one that basically got me recognised in the street was Strike It lucky back in 1992, at the time the most watched programme on TV, 20 million viewers every week

Of all the quiz machine derivatives of TV shows, Strike It Lucky was my favourite.

I used to have a couple of mates with whom I would tour the pubs of Essex raping and pillaging quiz machines, Strike It Lucky was a guaranteed couple of jackpots before we moved on to the next pub.

That said, the Adders and Ladders game was the most remunerative, because one could take £70/80 out of one of those if one could be bothered to stand at the machine for a couple of hours and of course if the landlord didn't realise what you were up to - had to be a busy, noisy pub.
