Just thinking about after that 115 year old woman thread.

I'm not sure if I would. It would weigh on you but then if you knew it wasn't long you'd behave differently.

I suppose the old saying "live each day like it's your last" should just be what you should do, but I tried that and my bank balance still hasn't recovered since I spent it all on gambling, drugs and loose women on day 1 Laugh

Of course but then I'm at ease with the futility of it all. So a week, a month, a year or a few decades won't make much difference but I'd make sure that the day I died would be the day the credit card companies and banks sent in the bailliffs. Laugh

Not really, but it would be useful so I can make provisions for my cats.

I already know the date of my death.

It was August 5th 1997.
Report akabula • January 5, 2015 12:42 AM GMT
A definite no from me. It would weigh heavily on the mind.
I try not to think about it and would rather have a sudden and unexpected end.

"I try not to think about it and would rather have a sudden and unexpected end."

Yes, not soon of course, but I don't want a slow lingering painful exit.
If it's got sufficient strong safeguards I'm ok with dignitas and the like.

"I already know the date of my death.
It was August 5th 1997."
What was that, the date you got married? Laugh

Aka there has been a "death clock" type thing on the internet since forever. That sounds like a copy cashing in. I've always refused to do them, maybe a little superstitious. Actually that 100% answers my own question, I won't even do the joke ones Laugh

There was some article the other day about how many (not all) cancers are just down to bad luck.

But, if life is like gambling, then you just need to optimise your odds, it's that simple.
I typed something into the "workplace smoking" thread but then didn't submit, .. but ffs it's such a STUPID thing to do, It's just mind blowing anyone would take such a ridiculous expensive lethal habit up. I can understand older people who are addicted continuing and good luck to them, but young people taking it up, wtf?!
Report pumphol. • January 5, 2015 1:13 AM GMT
There are many cancers that are nothing to do with lifestyle, faulty genes are commonplace which can trigger cancer from any age.
Report akabula • January 5, 2015 1:16 AM GMT
I started smoking as a young teenager in the 60s mainly because the guys I went about with did.
It was everywhere then. Great adverts on the telly and in your face wherever you went as a cool thing to do.
Even at Christmas it was customary to give special packs of 50 or 100 as a present.
I went from woodbine (you could buy them in packets of 5) to Rothmans which were tipped then to non tipped Capstan and then Capstan Full Strength then back to tipped.
I managed to stop 25 years ago and doubt if I'd still be alive if I hadn't, was a 40+ a day smoker for most of that time.
Report Just Checking • January 5, 2015 1:17 AM GMT
Yes pump that's what I'm saying BUT also, you CAN optimise your odds.

I don't want to divert this thread into some pro smoking/anti smoking mass argument though, so maybe I shouldn't have posted the above. BUT If you've 100 identical twins and with each of them, one has a healthy lifestyle (diet exercise etc) and the other lives off lard and **** and never moves from the couch, you can be pretty sure which one is going to be very obviously the one who lives longer, probably by a considerable margin.

Call it "the edge" Laugh

obviously  FFS ! Crazy
Report pumphol. • January 5, 2015 1:22 AM GMT
Of course a healthy ish lifestyle will help  maximise yourchances of living longer, I rarely drink don't smoke & do exercise, but chances are I wont be here in 10 years, not everyone is dealt a decent hand, but as the saying goes there are always people worse of than yourself, a good friends wife has cancer which has now spread to her  brain she is 56 her daughter is getting married in seven weeks she aint going to be there barring a miracle  Sad

This caught my eye earlier, was mixed in with NY tv shows lol, so maybe there are worse things than ciggies.
Report Just Checking • January 5, 2015 1:24 AM GMT
Good on you aka. As I say I respect that older people may be addicted, and it's just become a  part of their life etc, and I don't judge them. I'm not some anti smoking "nazi". What I can't understand is how younger people, with all the evidence in front of them, would take it up when it has so many negatives. Booze at least if in moderation isn't that likely to kill you. Cigs are just russian roulette.
There are websites with identical twins where one has smoked and other hasn't, you can see it in the damage to their faces, never mind their internal organs.

I'd been back on the smokes all last year & drinking due to stress & probably boredom , can really get your self esteem down

So I quit last Saturday on the spare of the moment , just literally had enough & refused to go to the shop to buy more  , just waiting for a nice new e-cig to be delivered with a load of dif liquidsHappy

Will still have the odd drink but without smoking , drinking becomes much less fun too  Blush
Report Platini • January 5, 2015 1:29 AM GMT
I disagree. I've no sympathy for smokers. They're weak-willed cants who become selfish cants inflicting their poison on innocents. You can blame advertising, you can blame peer pressure, but it still comes down to choice and willpower.

BTW I enjoyed it at first as I thought it was a cool thing to do, then I never gave it much thought until it started affecting my health, out of breath etc,.. then I hated it but struggled to stop.
Tried everything then one day just said enough is enough and that was that.
It isn't only my health that benefited but my bank balance as well.
Using 40 a day at £7 a packet that's over £5k a year which embarrasses me now to think that I wasted that for all those years.
Report Mc Moonbeam • January 5, 2015 1:49 AM GMT
Totally agree Aka

Exactly what I said to myself last week

I did Quit in 2012 but started smoking again with moving , stress ,drinking etc last year , but didn't really plan to , just all builds up till you've Had It .....

enjoy the E-cig though & not sure I could quit so easy otherwise Cool

Hospital inpatients who are smokers can now get nicotine patches slapped on them. I'm sure it is all about will power.
I've a new years resolution of losing a few pounds, so lets see how mine is, or if I'm a ****ing fridge addicted hypocrite :)
Report akabula • January 5, 2015 1:54 AM GMT
McM it was the money thing that struck me first ie not having to go to the cashline as often.
I did cold turkey but tbh I never had the craving that lots of people speak of.
Was a while but I noticed that I was less out of breath when walking etc.
Keep at it as the differences do become immense. Wealth and health, what's not to like about it.
Report Mc Moonbeam • January 5, 2015 2:04 AM GMT
Agree the money never used to bother me , smoking used to be cheap until 5 years ago , but you get addicted to the whole cycle , every time I was popping the shop = grab 4 cans !!

That's why newsagents are always so friendly , lol

I actually feel I have more energy already , not get so tired early , played poker 12 hours straight last couple days

Did get a bit of an airhead for a few days but e-cig's are great imo

I suffer from asthma & Doc told me years ago I wouldn't be 'one of the lucky ones' and think he was probably right but wouldn't listen back then

If I find out the date of my death and then go to the international date line and cross over it (going forward in time) at the point of midnight at the beginning of the day that I was to die, I could just completely miss out that day. Would this mean that I would then be able to then live forever?

Weak willed caants, as you so eloquently put it, are the non-smoking caants (who pay far less tax than smokers) who went to pubs with their caantish non-smoking mates, before the smoking ban, as the weak willed caants need for alcohol far outweighed the risk of second hand caanting cigarette smoke.

These are the same non-smoking caaants who were going to flock back to the pubs after the ban.

So why have so many pubs closed down over the last 5 years, caant?
