Mr Badger. Have you ever watched the programme? If so, how can you not understand the simple purpose of it?
In a nutshell: You buy something from a dealer in used/old/antique goods that you think will bring a better price at auction. Possibly because you spot a piece which is more valuable than the dealer thinks. Negotiation is possible because the 'ticket prices' are only what the dealer would like to achieve and they will usually settle for a smaller 'mark-up' on items.
You then take your purchases to auction and, with a bit of luck and a touch of knowledge, the items will sell for more than you paid for them.
A bit like an item the other day which was bought for £50 and sold for £520.

naydam, thank you for your erudite and helpful explanation of the transfer of title by means of monetary transaction - I really had no idea before; of course I understand the principle of it - what I am saying is that theyare sourcing their stuff from the wrong suppliers and trying to sell them in the worst place. And items like the one you mention are very few and far between... the contest is usually "won" by the team with the smaller losses
You really can be a pompous **** sometimes btw

Correct, in that they buy at retail and sell at wholesale.
Never ceases to amaze me how useless the experts are.
And, why is it that the auctioneers seem to know more than any of the experts?

most of the experts specialize in one particular field whereas an auctioneer will see loads of stuff. Also auction houses also have backroom staff doing research on what they are selling

Whether you get a profit seems to have a lot to do with which auction house you end up at,plenty never make the contestants anything but the old Scottish bird Anita's auction house always seems to get them big profits, you've had a bad day if you don't make 3 figures there, often wonder if she plants bidders for the publicity as I don't recall anyone ever making a loss at her gaff.

I think its something to do with Anita's being in scotland - no tuition fees and various other "benefits" that the english are subsidising for them makes the scotts condsiderably richer than Yow.
That shocking auction house in Diss never makes a bean.

I cant stand the visits to ancestral homes. Its a key item with the beeb in all their programmes about antiques..we have to have a little history lesson as if to counterbalance the wheeling and dealing with a bit of worthy education. Flog It, road trip, Bargain hunt all suffer from this pointless intrusion.

I must admit that I find his little visits to the local mansion absolutely fascinating. Some of the skill and finessse involved in the works of art are to be truly admired. I suppose that much of it would be done under less-than-perfect conditions, too. This is one time when one can rightly use the word...AWESOME.

the only reason they normally make a profit is because they grind the dealer down to an unrealistic price who gives in because he's on telly.you try going into an antique shop & offering £20 for an item marked up for £60 youll be laughed out of the shop.

I have nothing against being educated.I love programmes about historic houses with families who can trace their line back 1,000 years. Fine art and antiques are right up my street. Its the five minute interval we get that I dont like.It has BBC piety and the whiff of a filler to justify a show that doesn't need justifying. Tim should have his own show. His knowledge is breathtaking.

You go to be realistic. The dealer is not going to sell it for less than he paid for it , unless he's had something a long time with no offers for it. The dealer doesn't make money from stuff sitting on his shelves. He has to buy it and sell it. It would not surprise me to find that quite often the dealer bought his own items back, if they were cheap enough, in order to sell them again. Why not?

All prices are negotiable. On everything. The antiques business is no different to any other. Cars, houses, fancy goods, even your weekly supermarket shopping. They can, and usually will, accept a sensible offer. We don't do anywhere near enough bartering.

BARROWBOY, I was completely misunderstood in the matter of the Letitiagate saga. I would like to think I would be known as something else other than a chubby chaser on here

Showing David Barby in so many episodes sort of gives away the fact they are repeating too many shows. He's been dead for 2 years. If you go to Ardingley, Newark or Lincoln or Builth they are always filming so they shouldn't need so many repeats.

got the perfect continuity programme for the bbc to wedge in between homes under the hammer & saints & sinners.how about a programme that monitors property bought at auction with stolen money & tax avoidance by developers selling renovating property, would be seamless.

Tim Wonnacott is suspended after a dispute with the independant producers of Bargain Hunt. Now lined up for Top Gear apparently - going to do bits on vintage vehicles and automobilia.

I really suspect anita gets her pals to bid silly money for tat at her auction house as no one ever loses money there. In today's episode I think the contestants also put shills in the auction, resulting in a bidding frenzy with one team making £165 and losing to a team winning £250.

Re "shills" at auction, many are unaware that bidding up the items you are selling is not only allowed but often encouraged by the auction house (who of course have nothing to lose, given the commission/buyers premium)
