Less than 12 hours to go.. Predictions? cant wait given the great summer we have had so far.
England 3-1 or 2-1. Not beyond the realms of possibility Aus win, but there is an equal chance we absolutely smash them 3-0, 4-0, 4-1 or dare I say it 5-0. The weather is very very good right now.
It is well reported, but I do think James Pattinson could be the real deal, Siddle will always get the most from his ability. Starc, Harris and unknown quantities like Faulkener and Bird could be surprise packages. And all this is without the injured kid Cummins. But if we bowl to our potential we could really trouble their batsmen. Not convinced about dropping Compton for Bairstow with Root up front... He was doing fine at number six. Their late order can bat well too but not with the experience of ours. Swann to be the star for me, has everything going for him in this series. There is an argument for all the aussie players being surprise stars tbf, except Clarke for whom a lot is expected, and thus no surprise. If he doesnt perform to the level they have become accustomed they will have problems. Jimmy Anderson is very very good by the way.
My one nailed on guarantee is that Bell will not perform if under any serious pressure.
My speakers are really playing up at the moment and as they're inbuilt in the monitor I have to keep tweaking all sorts of things to try and hear things properly, so I missed a couple of bits of what was being said - but it was still making me laugh out loud. Fair play to Aggers in saying he'd go back and do it again!
Great fun!

In defence of woakes and kerrigan, i can think of numerous players who i was inclined to dismiss early on in their careers. Freddie didnt look a test quality bowler or batsman early doors. Amla looked well short of test quality in his first series v england. There are numerous other examples. Kerrigan just bottled it today, from what I have read before today he seemed to be the more likely test class bowler than woakes going into this match, lets give him the benefit of the doubt.
The pair have only played one day of test cricket so far.

Get an ipad Tommy. They are brilliant, so simple to use, never breakdown and i suspect you are not using your laptop for spreadsheets, computer programming and website design in your sparetime.

Haha! I might do one day, Rob, but I'm happy enough with my old desktop. Plus, sitting at the computer is much better for my gammy knee. The sofa is at justthe wrong height for me to sit on it for too long before my knee locks up. The computer chair is higher and is at a perfect height for my knee - plus I have a stool under the desk to put my feet on - so it makes it even better.

Just wrotea long post and lost it so just quick sentences cos i aint gonna type it again...
I hope kerrigan doeswell and surprises a few of us, still 16 wickets up for grabs. Just put your ipad where your desktopwas.

Such a great days sport, really enjoyed myself as did everyone else. Watson's knock was superb and he got a massive standing ovation from the packed ground of 23,000 for his 176. Had a right laugh and paid for expenses punting, can't say fairer than that for a day out at The Oval.

Ah, good idea Rob (putting it where the desktop is)! I'll wait till I blow this one up first though!
Yes, hope Kerrigan can sort himself out. The poor bloke must be devastated tonight.
Glad you've had a terrific day Slippy - and that the punting covered the exes!

I,for my sins, have a long history of dismissing players early in their careers. Amla and flintoff two notables. Not beyond the realms of possibility Kerrigan comes out tomorrow rejuvenated tomorrow and strangles out two or three then does another three or four in their second innings. Give em hell Kerrigan.

The on course book bet365 were going evens Watson out next when he was in with Smith, we all took a view and hammered it. Smith was middling everything and Watson was going for it.
I was arguing all day with the boss about the percentages and he was giving me prices that didn't exist just to get rid of me away from the counter
It was lovely when he holed out right at the death to KP. The manager liked our banter but we never had a losing bet with them. Not for fortunes but enough to hurt. What a great day I had, still smiling.

Only been to the oval once, happy days. £20 at 11/2 on less than 74 runs(i think) v saffers in the last session 2008. It p1ssed it down late on with fiftyish runs scored, but the requisite 24 overs werent bowled so i returned to collect my twenty quid void bet. The girl gave me £130. I just told the missus, "follow me, dont look back, and get out of here as fast as possible". Paid for the tickets, Like i say happy days. 2008 v saffers.

It's a good job it wasn't tomorrow, Rob, as even the overpayment would have left you £783 short. As Fred Boycott says: "Ow Much!!!" - £913.59 for two seats in the Bedser Standhttps://twitter.com/OwMuch/status/370460563429548032/photo/1
TT, tickets yesterday morning were going at face value half an hour before play started. We paid £75 each for our seats and two blokes who sat behind us came in just before lunch and got two seats for a score apiece

I can believe it Slippy. I've seen someone on that link has been trying to sell his Saturday ticket at face value of £40 - and can't get a buyer.
It's amazing to me how these ticket agencies get away with it. Talk about profiteering!

He had to get up this morning at about 6:30 to catch a train down there. I'll bet he was glad he finally got to see some play!
Slippy, Fenners has gone to the Oval today. He had to get up this morning at about 6:30 to catch a train down there.I'll bet he was glad he finally got to see some play!
Oh no! He should have told me, I would have gone down there when they took the covers off to meet up for a beer, you would have got in for a tenner.
I'm just messing around on the horses today, two steps forward two steps back Would much rather have been at the cricket but nobody else I knew was going today so didn't bother.

Ah, what a shame you didn't come into Nibbsy's for the quiz last night then Slippy. Fenners was talking about going to the Oval today in there.
He's staying in London tonight (I think) and then going to watch one of his dogs run at the Hove tomorrow - or he's travelling to Brighton tonight and then watching his dog on Friday - but whatever it is; he's watching the cricket today and his dog tomorrow. You know how I get mixed up with the geography!

Bring it on boys. A flat wicket and some big runs for the out of form batsmen and we can turn this disappointing 3-0 win into some sort of moral victory.

Tommy I was wondering the other day. If cricket fans such as yourself don't come from a major cricket playing county, do you support a neighbouring one? Not sure who your nearest one is if you're in staffs. Derbyshire, Lancs??

Would be Derbyshire, or at a push Worcs or Warwickshire. I vaguely support Yorkshire, having grown up there. It's an interesting question. Cricket is very popular here from what I can see. Toes?

Toes will know a lot more about baseball than I do. :-) Not a strength for my hometown (in the US) so took the NFL a lot more. I have seen the Yankees play though, was grand!

I'm afraid that although I've always been an avid sports follower, cricket always left me cold when I was a kid - as it was the era of Boycott and when my parents used to have the cricket on the telly at the time and I went out to play 'our Geoffrey' would be at the crease when I went out - and still there when I returned some 5 hours later, having scored about 5 runs. I couldn't abide the game at the time and took scant interest in it (although because my parents were avid followers I couldn't help but take some notice of it).
I only really 'got into' cricket when the West Indies toured here in 1990/91 and the Magnificent Ambrose frightened Hick to death. I was transfixed after that series and have always enjoyed Test cricket ever since. However, I don't take any notice of the county stuff, mainly because I see nothing of it.
As Sparky says though, cricket is a pretty big participation sport in the local area and there are loads of teams and leagues. My neighbour has always played in them until about 3 years ago and when I mentioned to him once about who would people from Stoke 'support' re the main counties he said probably Derbyshire - but it's probably just a general interest altogether in cricket, and in particular England, because we don't have a major team ourselves.

Ah, I've heard them say you can listen overseas to the BBC site - but I've always wondered if they're telling the truth as it wasn't so long ago you couldn't even listen to Test Match Special on the BBC site over here (copyright, or something)!
Are you still in Hong Kong then? What's it like?

Hong Kong was great, but now I am in Osaka (Japan, it's in Asia)...can't say it's my favourite place but I am getting used to it.
I am sure I tried once a few years ago to listen to the test on the bbc and they didn't let me, perhaps they only block it in countries that have their own rights to the series.

Well, I was going to go out and do some more gardening today - but sod it. It's the last day of The Ashes this Summer so I'm going to have a glass of wine with my Aussie friend Joel instead - especially as we're in different parts of the world but listening to the very same commentary.
Cheers Joel!

Funny how Jim Maxwell is talking about the Shipping Forecast book, as it was only the last Test when I tried to do a bit of research to find out what had happened to my favourite ever Aussie commentator 'Doctor' Neville Oliver - who loved 'The Shippers' as he called them.
Apparently, he got the push from the tv station he worked for over in Oz, became a politician for a bit and is now running a hardware store (I think).
I really enjoyed listening to him. He was terrific fun.

Agreed, Sparky. The spectators who are there have paid good money and deserve some entertainment.
I was struck when I watched the highlights on Friday night just how deathly quiet the crowd were after England had played 'Boycott cricket' all day. It gave me a shudder to remember just what that stuff was like.
Jim Maxwell was commentating at the end of play on TMS and begging them to go off for the light! Tuffers was with him and couldn't stop laughing!

This Aussie journo is really telling it like it is: England should have been far more 'commanding' on Friday if they really think they're so much better than Oz - not just trying not to lose.
Cracking stuff Joel! This Aussie journo is really telling it like it is: England should have been far more 'commanding' on Friday if they really think they're so much better than Oz - not just trying not to lose.
In my mind's eye the way I remember Tuffers coming to the crease is him sort of shuffling out with his 10 to 2 feet, practising his shots - with the bat held aloft, in front of his face.
He then batted accordingly - using his bat as a shield!

Joel, he (Vaughan) was a very good tactical captain and is (obviously) seeing it from an England point of view - but it needs to be thought of from a cricket watcher/listener/payer's point of view.
It's all very well for these blokes on the gravy train, with loads in the bank, to disregard how much it's cost people to get to The Oval today - but it really should be foremost in their minds when they say anything at all.

Boycott is such a self obsessed 'Charlie Big Time' at times, he turns every bit of humour directed at him into a diatribe of who he knows, how important he is, blah blah blah pile of tripe.
Jim Maxwell: "Do you wear budgie smugglers like our PM, Geoffrey"
"Budgie smugglers? Never heard of them in Yorksheeere. I've met your Prime Minister though. Had many a chat with him"

That Boycott bugger knows every ball he's ever played, against anyone, anywhere. He was just hoping he could get away with the 'memory loss'.
Aggers must have had the researcher on the case ever since - and found the wicket!
"Oh did I?" said Boycott - as if he didn't know.

Yes, well done to Clarke for making a match of it - but what a disappointing end of play
This whole review system/umpire's decisions etc etc really needs to be looked at before they go Down Under for the next one. I reckon there's been enough rancour this Series to make the next one more than a little bit 'naughty' if they don't.
Surely they've got to forget about this neutral umpiring thing between England and Oz when it's perfectly clear that both nations have the best umpires - and the best is what's called for.
