What is that all about, seems like a parody of itself.  Like something the fast show would produce when taking the p1ss out of seventies cop shows.  I like John Thaw in Morse, but he is wholly unconvincing in this laughable show. I imagine the kind of people that like this programme think that "Bravo Two Zero" actually improves with every read, and dont "get" Alan Partridge.

Could quite easily be re released as a p1ss take of itself and it would be a cracking comedy.

Was a ground breaking show in its time, but it was 35 years ago, bit much to have a knock at it now imo!

Lots of tv/music/books etc is old though, no excuse for being utter dogsh1t imo.  When you go down the road of saying "oh it was different then, we lived in less enlightened times" well  it is a bit like being a Jimmy Savile/Gary Glitter apologist because it "was the seventies"..  Sometimes you just need to hold your hands up and admit that yes, i did like it at the time but looking back it is an excruciatingly, embarassingly poor show.

It represented the times and had much more punch than the likes of Z cars and Dixon of dock green, even the coppers loved it!

I can cope with the idiot racism, the casual misogyny and the suspiciously strident homophobia, but I will not stand for criticism of the peerless Sweeney.

It remains the finest programme on TV, even after all these years, and deserved better than the appalling film that was recently released bearing that proud name.

RD clearly needs George to give 'im a bloody good 'iding.

I'll get me Bells and twenty Rothmans.

I think you had have to live in that time to appreciate it, there was nothing else to compare it to.
Essential viewing at the time and I agree anyone watching it now might see it as a parody.
There was simply nothing else like it at the time.

It's a bit like saying the Long Good Friday is a sh1t film because it was set in the era that it was made. Rob, what you have said is blasphemous - wash your mouth out with soap straight away.

if you want utter dogsh1t there is a film out at the moment by coincidence also called the sweeney

I recently bought the complete Sweeney box set and can't belive just how good the first couple of series were , best COp series bar none and could rightly claim to be the best Drama series bar none as well.

Surely fishing from Dylan here? has he lost his mind?

I don't think the Sweeney has ever been bettered and for it's time it was spot on.When you think of the tiny budgets shows had at the time it's amazing really.

The recent film with Ray Winstone and Plan B was a bit gash, but tbf bore little if any resembalance to the originals.

In its day The Sweeney was must watch tv in our house along with the likes of say Roots and Hill Street Blues.
It's a bit unfair to have a pop at the series really after all this time as it was an iconic show of that era. I can still watch old episodes quite happily, bit of a trip down memory lane for me to see them again in fact.

To criticise something made 30 odd years ago because it now looks dated it a bit silly imo.
Technology & dialogue have moved forward to such an extent that programmes made  10 - 15 years ago also look very dated.
When it was on in the 70's almost everyone would say it was one of the best things on TV, that you cannot change, if you find it poor & dated now does not stop it being a great programme of its day & never will.

some things are better viewed in their raw state imo  - too much brushing and effects can spoil things imo .

To really appreciate The Sweeney you need to have seen it when it originally was broadcast, comparing it to what is on now or what came after doesn't do it justice. At the time as already mentioned you had repeats of Z Cars or Dixon of Dock Green or the best the USA could offer Frank Cannon,The Sweeney was more realistic in language and attitudes at the time.
For the youngsters amongst you Frank Cannon was a 20 odd stone Private Eye in his 50's who could give a teenage black guy a 20 yard start and still catch him. Amazing levels of fitness shown by a man so big.
