You're nicked!

Could quite easily be re released as a p1ss take of itself and it would be a cracking comedy.

put your trousers on
your nicked! |

Was a ground breaking show in its time, but it was 35 years ago, bit much to have a knock at it now imo!
|
By:
Lots of tv/music/books etc is old though, no excuse for being utter dogsh1t imo. When you go down the road of saying "oh it was different then, we lived in less enlightened times" well it is a bit like being a Jimmy Savile/Gary Glitter apologist because it "was the seventies".. Sometimes you just need to hold your hands up and admit that yes, i did like it at the time but looking back it is an excruciatingly, embarassingly poor show.

rob dylan moaning about something
Has this ever happened before? |

Fair point, wish I was a more happy-go-lucky, glass-half-full, the-world-is-my-lobster, rocky-is-a-good film optimist like yourself.
|
By:
It represented the times and had much more punch than the likes of Z cars and Dixon of dock green, even the coppers loved it!
|

I can cope with the idiot racism, the casual misogyny and the suspiciously strident homophobia, but I will not stand for criticism of the peerless Sweeney.
It remains the finest programme on TV, even after all these years, and deserved better than the appalling film that was recently released bearing that proud name. RD clearly needs George to give 'im a bloody good 'iding. I'll get me Bells and twenty Rothmans. |
By:
Are you from the 20th Century...?
|
By:
We re the Sweeney son and we haven t had any dinner.Brillint tv .
|
By:
You slags.
|
By:
I think you had have to live in that time to appreciate it, there was nothing else to compare it to.
Essential viewing at the time and I agree anyone watching it now might see it as a parody. There was simply nothing else like it at the time. |
By:
The intro alone is worth the entrance fee.10 secs drama then into the theme tune.Fantastic.
|
By:
Great incidental music in it as well.Play the following from 2:35 till the opening credits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CTAMwCHZcQ

and unlike most cop shows of the time the criminals didn't always get collared
|

The Sweeney was/is Brilliant..And is the reason i wanted to be a copper ,Not seen the film but i suspect Winstone is no Thaw as Jack Reagan..
|
By:
It's a bit like saying the Long Good Friday is a sh1t film because it was set in the era that it was made. Rob, what you have said is blasphemous - wash your mouth out with soap straight away.
|
By:
if you want utter dogsh1t there is a film out at the moment by coincidence also called the sweeney
but thats where the similarity from the series to film ends . |
By:
One of the worst films I've ever seen - I walked out.
|
By:
|
By:
I recently bought the complete Sweeney box set and can't belive just how good the first couple of series were , best COp series bar none and could rightly claim to be the best Drama series bar none as well.
|
By:
Surely fishing from Dylan here? has he lost his mind?
I don't think the Sweeney has ever been bettered and for it's time it was spot on.When you think of the tiny budgets shows had at the time it's amazing really. The recent film with Ray Winstone and Plan B was a bit gash, but tbf bore little if any resembalance to the originals. |
By:
In its day The Sweeney was must watch tv in our house along with the likes of say Roots and Hill Street Blues.
It's a bit unfair to have a pop at the series really after all this time as it was an iconic show of that era. I can still watch old episodes quite happily, bit of a trip down memory lane for me to see them again in fact. |
By:
To criticise something made 30 odd years ago because it now looks dated it a bit silly imo.
Technology & dialogue have moved forward to such an extent that programmes made 10 - 15 years ago also look very dated. When it was on in the 70's almost everyone would say it was one of the best things on TV, that you cannot change, if you find it poor & dated now does not stop it being a great programme of its day & never will. |
By:
Thought the original show and the latest film was both very good.
Although they have no resemblance name / characters aside |

___________ some things are better viewed in their raw state imo - too much brushing and effects can spoil things imo . the joy of watching the old cop shows are seeing how folk lived - i was a child back then . The street scenes and interior decor tells me that i'm glad i live now tbf ..i couldn't handle those gaudy patterned carpets and wallpaper ,fake wood and badly made cars ...yukkadoo |

How very dare you sir? The Mk1 Granny - as seen in the first Sweeney series - was a thing of beauty and a joy to drive |

I'll give you old boys Minder, cos that was funny and clearly didnt take itself too seriously. The Sweeney , and its fans, clearly did ttake itself seriousy, I mean these people genuinely thouht they were watching a good tv programme, for that reason alone they should be mercilessly ribbed imi.
|
By:
And regards Bon Vivvys outrageous suggestion this might be a fishing thread, what a slur on my carefully cultured good name. Of course its a fakkin fishing thread. Thats not to say id no sooner watch a whole episode of the sweeney as walk down the street wearing a string vest..
|
By:
You facking liar
You're only saying it's a fishing thread because so many disagree with you |
By:
I like being disagreed with.
|
By:
the sort of man that reads the paper from the front

To really appreciate The Sweeney you need to have seen it when it originally was broadcast, comparing it to what is on now or what came after doesn't do it justice. At the time as already mentioned you had repeats of Z Cars or Dixon of Dock Green or the best the USA could offer Frank Cannon,The Sweeney was more realistic in language and attitudes at the time.
For the youngsters amongst you Frank Cannon was a 20 odd stone Private Eye in his 50's who could give a teenage black guy a 20 yard start and still catch him. Amazing levels of fitness shown by a man so big. |
