What’s the Story Behind Tumacácori?

Situated at a cultural crossroads in Arizona’s Santa Cruz River valley, the ruins at Tumacácori National Historical Park have seen a lot in their time. Conflict and cooperation both shaped the history of this unique park, where settlers, soldiers, and European missionaries intersected with the native O’odham, Yaqui, and Apache people.

Gate of All Nations, Persepolis, Iran

The fact Cyrus the Great literally had a gate for all nations… This man, this Iranian, was truly the start and champion of human rights at the time when slavery was literally the height fashion. He literally went to battle to free slaves that had nothing to do with him, Jews enslaved in Babylon, simply because it was the right thing to do. He not only freed them like Americans claim they did black slaves but he gave them all land and a means to make money and a rift to freely practice their culture and religion, as all within the Persian empire were allowed to do. He didn’t just free the Jews and then keep them at the lower end of society. He gave them a means to prosper and to join everyone else’s social ranking. He made them feel important again.

When seen from a great height, the lake Inokashira Park lake appears to be entirely covered in blossoms! Resembling pollen in a river stream, the blossoms turn the lake a surreal pink, a view unseen by most before the drone age

Mt. Erebus in Antarctica, the southernmost active volcano in the world, is known for the numerous ice fumaroles - also known as ice chimneys - that dot the surrounding landscape. The ice towers are created when snow and ice begin to form around gas escaping from the pressurized caves beneath the ground. These caves are of special interest to astrobiologists, as they are untouched by humans and contain only extremophile bacteria and fungi. It is believed that such caves may exist on Mars, suggesting that it may be possible for life to exist there.

Although the fjords of Norway are renowned for their beauty, the 1,190 existing ones dotted across the country’s landscape present a major logistical challenge for residents, who often have to drive long distances around them. As an answer to this problem, Norway - one of the world’s leaders in technological innovation - has decided to build the world’s first underwater tunnel, which is projected to cost approximately $25 billion.

Red Tides

Red tides, a common term for the more proper name of “harmful algal blooms” (HABs), occur when colonies of algae—simple ocean plants that live in the sea—grow out of control while producing toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals and birds. The human illnesses caused by HABs, though rare, can be debilitating or even fatal. As the name suggests, the bloom of algae often turns the water red.

But not all algal blooms are harmful. Most blooms, in fact, are beneficial because the tiny plants are food for animals in the ocean. In fact, they are the major source of energy that fuels the ocean food web.

Imperial ramp of Domitian opens to public

For the first time since it was discovered in 1900, a monumental ramp built by Emperor Domitian in Rome opened to the public on Tuesday, October 20th. (2015) Domitian built the ramp in the second half of the 1st century A.D. to connect the Roman Forum, the administrative and political heart of the city, to the imperial palace complex of the Palatine, the city’s center of power. With high walls flanked by storerooms, the imperial ramp went up seven levels with six turns between them and was as much as 35 meters (115 feet) high. Of the seven original ramps levels, four remain, but they are more than sufficient to convey the majesty of the space and the symbolic significance of the steep ascension from popular politics to imperial might…

In the very South of New Zealand the Cathedral Caves are a highlight along the coastal road. They are located in the cliffs of Waipati Beach where a passage leads through the rocks. The two main caves are joined together and measure just on 200 meters. What makes them so spectacular, though, is their impressive height. The passage reaches up to 30 meters which also gave the connected caves their name “Cathedral Caves”.

Each building, location and street is deeply immersed with history, trauma and human interaction that has eroded with time. there are about thirty three thousand urban foxes in bristol. though the population remains stable, some argue for a cull, viewing them as dangerous. ecologists, however, counter that killing the foxes would be pointless as they are territorial (with a territory of about thirty hectares on average), and when you kill one another simply claims the territory.

notes photogrpaher sam hobson, “using a flash with nocturnal wildlife is a contentious issue, especially out in the wild …where many animals are not used to artificial light and a flash can cause temporary blindness. but urban foxes …are used to artificial light, so a low powered, indirect camera flash is no different to the sudden reflection of a car headlight. i introduced it very slowly, observing their reactions at every step.”

Artist Transforms Ordinary Beer Bottles Into Beautiful & Delicate Leaf Jewelry

Minnesota based stained-glass artist Brian Western has skillfully manifested his love for beer and glass art by creating a delicate and ethereal collection of glass leaf jewlwery. With the use of bottles from Leffe Blonde, Tripel Karmeliet, Victory Old Horizontal, Anchor Steam, and Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, he has merged both passions beautifully.

Also crafted from wine and whiskey bottles, and antique German glass, you will find other jewelry pieces in the shape of insects, adorable animals and mythological creatures

Extreme research: To track changes in sea ice, the Norwegian research vessel Lance drifted along with it for five months in 2015, on a rare voyage from an Arctic winter into spring. Passengers in the helicopter took a photo of their first glimpse of Lance from the air on their way in to live on the ship for six weeks. Search lights shine out over the polar night and cracks can be seen separating the ice floes from one-another

These boats are often used in partnership with other NGO's, offering general healthcare facilities as well as eye health diagnosis to extremely impoverished villages deep within the Sundarbans. Dr Sil's team uses boats to get around the Sundarbans and often works from early morning to late at night on patients who would otherwise not have access to good eye care
