http://www.newhamrecorder.co.uk/news/manor_park_fraudsters_jailed_for_bank_card_scam_1_863530

They were part of a 10-strong gang that duped elderly victims from across east and north London into handing over their bank cards between October 2008 and 2009.

The callous crooks were jailed for a total of 14 years at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday.

Numan Patel, of Third Avenue, and Wakas Ahmed, of Eight Avenue, both 22, were each jailed for three years, while Mohammad Sadak, 24, of Sheringham Avenue, was locked up for a year.

Mohammad Iqbal, 20, of Meanley Road, was caged for 14 months and Wasim Ahmad, 28, of Little Ilford Lane, was given a year-long suspended jail term.

They called their victims claiming to be police officers investigating a fraud on their bank account, the court heard.

The perpetrators would then ask for the account details before turning up in plain clothes to collect the bank card.

They claimed they needed to run the card through a machine at Scotland Yard to identify the person responsible for the fraud.

Victims would be provided with a fake crime reference number before being asked to place the card in a sealed envelope with the PIN written on the back.

Before leaving the address they would tell the victim not to speak to anyone about the incident as it would “jeopardise the investigation”.

Det Insp Chris Krelle, who led the investigation, said: “These cowardly offences were being committed against the most frail and vulnerable people in our communities.

“The successful conclusion of Operation Ferres has seen the dismantling of an organised crime group which has been deemed so serious the majority of those convicted received custodial sentences.”

Patel, Ahmed and Sadak all admitted conspiracy to defraud.

Iqbal admitted pleaded guilty to fraud, while Ahmad was convicted of conspiracy to defraud after a trial.

The gang went on to use the cards in retail outlets and betting shops.

One 88-year-old woman had £12,336 taken from her account, while four other victims lost more than £95,000.

He was attacked from behind by a group of men on Saturday, April 2 at 2.40am in Wakefield Street.

The victim was struck over the head by one man with what is believed to be a glass bottle. Bleeding, he staggered to the other side of the road to the junction of Katherine Road when the same attacker, now joined by three other men, continued the attack.

The four thugs fled when police and an ambulance crew arrived.

The injured man was taken to hospital with a fractured thumb, bruising and swelling to the head and needed ten stitches to a lip wound.

The suspects are described as Asian men, aged between 20 and 30 years old.

Investigating officer Det Con Geoff Emslie urged people who may have witnessed or know anything of “this seemingly unprovoked incident” to come forward and speak to police.

Devon Smith, 40, was watched by detectives as he put the drugs worth £232,000 into Segun Idris-Oloko’s car.

Smith, of Chesterton Road, and Oliver Scott, 42, of Finsbury Park, north London, were convicted of conspiring to supply heroin. They are to be sentenced on April 18.

Jurors at Inner London Crown Court were reduced to giggles during the trial after a barrister produced a 13-inch “multi-speed” vibrator found in the boot. Lawyer Bernard Eaton said: “I’d like to have a look at that one. I’m fascinated by something that’s multi-speed.”

Judge Patricia Lees told the jury: “While Mr Eaton plays with this, you can have a look at the rest of the exhibits. You’ll have to forgive Mr Eaton. He’s not got a very exciting life, I’m afraid.”

Smith was trailed by police from an address in Grays, Essex, to Walworth, south London where he met up with Mr Idris-Oloko on August 24 last year.

A jury accepted Mr Idris-Oloko’s explanation that he believed that bags were full of “shopping” and cleared the 43-year-old from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, of conspiring to supply class A drugs.

Officers raided the property of Lahmal Siddens, 18, in Rectory Road on January 25 and recovered the firearms, along with 34 live rounds.

During the search they noticed a man loitering outside and arrested him after establishing he was the occupant.

Further investigation uncovered text messages on his mobile phone linking him to the
weapons.

Siddens admitted possessing two firearms at Inner London Crown Court.

After the sentencing hearing, Det Sgt Neil Taylor said: “I am really pleased with this result which has led to the removal of two firearms capable of causing serious or even fatal injuries off the streets of Newham.

“This activity is part of our continued commitment to protect the public and disrupt criminal activity on the borough.”

The victims, both aged 17, were attacked in the stairwell of a block of flats in Daines Close.

Dozens of police officers were called to the scene at around 11.20pm.

The victims were taken to hospital and one underwent surgery to determine the extent of his wounds.

Neither received life-threatening injuries, Scotland Yard said.

The suspects are believed to have fled the scene as police arrived.

The entrance to the block remains sealed off this morning, with officers standing guard outside.

No arrests have yet been made.

Sentence in Nigerian tax credit fraud case
Olajumoke Ademuyiwa (42), a former Jobcentre Plus employee, has now been jailed for her involvement in stealing the identities of at least 350 people and using the identities to submit over 300 fraudulent tax credit claims, in a scam that spanned over four year.

Her accomplice, Olaide (John) Taiwo (35), was jailed for eight and a half years for his part in the scam on 22 February at Inner London Crown Court.

Richard Young, acting Assistant Director for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said:

The lengthy jail sentences given to this pair will act as a deterrent to anyone considering committing this type of crime. Over a four year period, they deliberately attacked and abused a system designed to provide financial help to the most vulnerable people in our society, by submitting over 300 fraudulent tax credit claims. Once again, I urge anyone who has information about Tax Credits fraud, to call the National Benefit Fraud Hotline on 0800 854 440 and help us stamp this fraudulent activity out.

Upon sentencing, His Honour Judge Simon Davis told Ademuyiwa:

You demonstrated blatant disregard for the truth, not only in the witness box where you lied and lied and lied, but also with documentation used in the fraud. With your role in attacking the revenue, you lied and turned things upside down which the jury saw through. You played an essential role as a helper beyond the scope of just opening bank accounts in the fraud.

Ademuyiwa, from Canning Town, East London was arrested in July 2008. A search of her home uncovered evidence of the fraud taking place, including details of at least 40 bank accounts held in the defendants’ names and aliases, plus documentation which held hundreds of innocent people’s identities. HMRC investigators also seized £25,000, which is believed to be proceeds of the crime.

Ademuyiwa was found guilty of fraudulently obtaining payments of tax credits, by using the names and addresses of individuals without their consent and acquiring criminal property.

Confiscation proceedings are in place.

Stephen Lewis was stabbed through the heart outside a church hall in Plaistow after a group of youths gatecrashed a “back-to-school” party.

Chris Mazekelua, 18, from Hooper Road, Custom House was jailed for life at the Old Bailey in November 2009 after he was found guilty of the youngster’s murder.

Rissasy Nyimbi, 19, of Vanguard Close, was convicted of manslaughter and jailed for eight years.

But lawyers for the pair went to the Court of Appeal claiming their trial was unfair and the convictions should be quashed.

Stephen was murdered in January 2009, in which a group of youths reportedly surrounded him shouting “shank him”, meaning “stab him”.

Despite many youngsters being present, police reported a “wall of silence” in response to their calls for information.

After would-be witnesses reported fear of reprisals if they testified, some were granted anonymity in exchange for evidence which helped convict the pair.

But lawyers for Mazekelua told the Court of Appeal there were flaws with the witness evidence and the Old Bailey judge had misdirected the jury.

Nyimbi’s lawyers also complained about witnesses’ testimony, and claimed his conviction for manslaughter was inconsistent with the murder verdict on Mazekelua.

Lord Justice Moses, Mr Justice Keith and Judge Peter Collier QC, reserved judgement on the pair’s appeals, saying they needed to read transcripts of some of the witness evidence before they could come to a view.

The judges’ decision will be given at an unspecified date later this year.

Robert Mady, 40, of Clements Road, East Ham, and Roman Coirun, 30, battered Stefan Jones around the head and wrist as he cowered on the ground, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

Mr Jones, who had an operation to remove his appendix the previous day, escaped serious injuries.

Threatening

The court heard at 8am on November 28, Mr Jones complained after neighbours held an all-night party in Devons Road, Barking.

When he went to remonstrate, Coirun and Mady, originally from Poland, made threatening gestures and climbed out of a downstairs window.

Mr Jones had a baseball bat for protection but fled and dropped it.

He was chased down the road by the men and set upon after he tripped over.

He was hit three times on the back of his head and wrist by Coirun who had picked up the baseball bat and then hit by Mady who used his belt as a weapon.

Last week, Judge William Kennedy said: “It is very disappointing when guests in this country commit very serious offences.

“Simple common courtesy dictates that a party should not inconvenience people who live next door.

“These bats can cause very serious injury and in some cases kill.”

Coirun, of Southbourne Gardens, Ilford, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was sentenced to seven months in prison, suspended for 12 months.

Mady, admitted assault by battery and was ordered to carry out 75 hours’ unpaid work.

Both men must abide by an electronically monitored curfew for two months from 10pm-6am and are banned from pubs, clubs and bars for three months.

They were also ordered to pay a total of £400 compensation to Mr Jones and to contribute £400 costs.

http://www.newhamrecorder.co.uk/news/loan_shark_who_targeted_newham_s_sri_lankans_is_jailed_1_869189

A man convicted of illegal money lending among Newham’s Sri Lankan community has been jailed for eight months.

Kanadasaba Nadarajah, 68, was arrested in April last when his home in Keppel Road, East Ham, was raided.

During the search a quantity of jewellery, identified by victims who had handed this over ‘as security’ on loans, was seized.

Documentation outlining names and amounts were also discovered with one ledger book detailing almost 800 loans, indicating that approximately £1.3million worth of loans had been given out illegally, over an eight year period.

Another diary with many of his ‘customers’ borrowing cash for small businesses.

One victim believed he paid between £30,000 and £40,000 in interest, after taking out a loan with Nadarajah.

Inner London Crown Court heard of one victim was offered a loan when he was struggling to pay his mortgage, as long as he provided some jewellery.

The illegal money lender charged interest each month until the principal loan could be repaid. As the victim was a property landlord, the payments were deducted from the income he received from a letting agent for the rental of his property. When the landlord decided to use another letting agent, Nadarajah withheld money owed and said he would sell the jewellery.

When sentencing His Honour Judge Bishop spoke of how vulnerable and poor people were “burdened by interest payments they cannot afford.”

Investigation

The London Trading Standards Illegal Money Lending Team, working in partnership with Newham Council and the Metropolitan Police Service Territorial Police Payback unit, are carrying out a further financial investigation looking into the proceeds of Nadarajah’s crime.

Cllr Unmesh Desai, Newham Council’s cabinet member for crime and anti-social behaviour, said: “He was targeting vulnerable people in the Sri Lankan community, using threats and violence to ensure that his corrupt loans where paid back.

“Loan sharks such as himself operate outside the law, are unlicensed and members of the community should avoid becoming a victim of their heartless fraud at all costs.”

The fact that indigenous whites are clearly NOT committing 32% of the crime in Newham.

Never fear. A new casino is going to get rid of the crime and corruption. Love

Developer launches judicial review over Newham casino decision

By Sarah Townsend Thursday, 21 April 2011

A rival bidder has launched legal proceedings in the High Court over the London Borough of Newham's decision to award the UK's largest casino licence to entertainment firm Aspers.

Yesterday, a consortium led by developer City & Eastern launched the first stage of a judicial review following a decision last month by Newham Council to grant Aspers a licence to open what would become the UK’s largest casino, in the new Stratford City Westfield Shopping Centre in east London.

But rival consortium City & Eastern said at the time that the decision to award the licence to Aspers was a "wasted opportunity to regenerate run-down areas of the borough".

City & Eastern claimed that the key requisite of Newham’s bid criteria was that a new casino development must bring urban regeneration benefits to the borough, and cited a 2007 BBC report in which Sir Robin Wales, mayor of Newham, said: "The right casino would be a powerful anchor for regeneration. It would form part of an enhanced leisure and entertainment facility ... and bring money into the borough – from the developers directly and through the jobs the casino and leisure complex would create."

The consortium said that it would seek a judicial review of what it called an "inappropriate" decision, on the grounds that the winning bid – unlike its own proposals, it said – would bring no such benefits.

Aspers’ bid was for a 6,000sq metre casino located in the Central Arcade of the Westfield Shopping Centre of the new Stratford City development.

City & Eastern’s proposal centred on the development of a 5.5ha derelict site at the eastern end of London’s Royal Docks, which has recently been designated as an enterprise zone by the coalition Government.

The City & Eastern consortium, which also includes social housing provider Notting Hill Housing Group, casino operator Group Partouche, developer Antony Spencer’s Stadium Developments and resort developer ARC, announced yesterday that it had been granted the review.

A statement from Fergus Kinloch, director of City & Eastern, said: "The judicial review has been formally launched as we believe that Newham council failed to comply with the proper processes relating to the bid.

"Right from the outset, the key factor underpinning the whole casino process was urban regeneration – as set out by law in the 2005 Gambling Act and made clear by Newham council itself as the key requisite of the bid criteria.

"What is therefore completely baffling is that the licence was awarded to the only bidder appearing to provide absolutely no regeneration benefit.

"The entire bidding process was held behind closed doors, and it is now clear to us that any proposal that was genuinely regenerative never stood a chance of winning the competition."

Kinloch added: "[The City & Eastern] bid had superlative credentials to deliver a world-class casino development with 1,200 full-time jobs, unlike the winning bid which only proposes to create 440 jobs."

A spokeswoman for the London Borough of Newham said: "The council’s decision making process to award the casino licence was robust and fair. We are aware of the legal challenge and are confident that all aspects of the process will stand up to scrutiny."

Aspers could not be contacted for comment at the time of writing.

There is obviously some wider 'debate' going on on chit chat regarding this subject that im not up to speed with so i wont comment too much.

What i will say though is that what is happening in newham is a theme being repeated up and down the country, definetly in areas close to where i live (though far enough away to not cause me immediatte concern thank goodness). The problem is that people just dont want to acknowledge the facts, which are that immigrants/foriegners/ethnics/asians (basically incert what you like) are commiting a far higher proportion of crime when compared to their number in society.

Its become a no no to state these facts though, or dare to speak out about this problem for fear of offending. The do-gooder, pander to them attitude is what is destroying british society.

Keep up the work winkle.

A sumptuous array of crime indeed. Clearly these criminal individuals have a great deal to offer the UK, and no doubt my hard-earned taxes will be put to good use processing their activities and financing their lifestyle.

Still, while our elderly citizens are being terrorised and robbed, while our young people have never ever been at such risk (from their peers), and while the taxpayer has never been so fleeced by so many for such little return, let's not forget the all-important primary concern for many of the 'enlightened left'.
