I know the smoke like most cities has it's ghettoes and the like but i was wondering if any londoners actually concur to any particular area as the "ultimate sh1tehole"?

I work there a couple of days a month and most i meet are **sexual liberals(the book trade)so i usually only ply around the more pleasant areas like Islington and Kensington.

Personally the likes of Wembley seem utter filth tips and peckham (is that a town? is unpleasant.I also had a incdient with a dead dog in streatham high st a while ago so those 3 are worthy of a mention.

Anybody who remembers the ex-Newham resident Cupid Stunt aka Oedipus Rex aka Nobby Cheese, who was another one not too fond of the grevilles, and he's a year older than me.

On anither forum somebody (may have been Fresh, can't remember) argued with him that anybody could walk about at any time in London as it was safe.

Cupid said to him 'I'll drop you off at Brixton Station at midnight. You'll be carrying a briefcase, a mobile phone and wearing a bit of visible jewellery. All you have to do is walk to Stockwell Station. If you get there without being mugged, I'll give you a monkey ' (£500)

The bloke asked Cupid 'What if I get mugged ?'

Cupid said ' Hard luck, but you'll owe me nothing.'

Unsurprisingly, mister 'Know it all about London but never been there' never took up the challenge.

I don't mind a ruck, but I wouldn't try that, not even for a monkey

I was on the last tube of the night from Morden to Stockwell, had to get off at Stockwell because of engineering and took the bus from Stockwell to Victoria

There was just me and this other guy in this carriage, we were on either sides, and a black guy came on at a stop, he sat down in the middle and he looked so high as kite, the black man kept making threatening advances just through his body language

you could see the other guy was sh!tting himself, mind you, the black guy didn't glance at me at all, I wonder why?

but nothing happened anyway, but this happened on the only late night tube journey I have made in London in my adult life....I wonder if that's a normal occurrence?

Afraid you'd get attacked by a gang of whites ?

Charlie, are you stalking me?

Here is the truth, but you won't like it. That is exactly what I was afraid of. The local scrotes were impressively multi-racial, but were predominantly white.

See my earlier post re Millwall, for the first time came close to real panic there one night, didn't see a black face.

Bon Viv, whilst your offer is commendable in so much as you are wanting to raise money for your charity, I would have to say that your methods of doing so leave a little to be desired. Do you really think that after two or three commetns on here you are going to get people to travel to London to have a fight with you?? I draw my conclusions as to your personality from your postings where you offer your views on other people. When I read some of your points about lower class chavs and work shy benefit claimaints and then you start asking where the rough parts of London are, I do not feel that I am hearing from a gentleman of equal standing to myself.

As I said the other day, some of us are more equal than others, and Bon viv, where I go in London there would be no entry for someone like you, and your conduct only underlines this. I am sure your charity would be proud that you are trying to start fights with unknown people on an Internet gambling forum.

I stand by my views on the workshy and chavs (albeit tongue in cheek to a point as you well know)

Your constant baiting the action of a "spoiler" and in real life you wouldn't use that language or actions unless you were looking for trouble. If that was the case i'm merely offering a legal fair way of sorting out your frustrations, and any money sent to a good cause.
If i'd followed you around using the language you'd used to me i think you'd be rather put out.

As for rough areas of London, the city and it's history has fascinated me for a long time and all i ever see and hear is "shudders" when locales are discussed,so just wondered what the viewpoint was in fairness.

As to "the areas you go in London" it's quite possible i wouldn't get further than the door but i bet i've had at least 15% of every private club memeber in London at my adult parties we ran for years (also ran "rougher" bukkakes/Gb's swing nights etc in the north)

Whilst in an advantageous postion myself, I am acutely aware of the plight of many people, the majority of which have little or no choice in the matter. I try my upmost to aid my workers and local people in any way I can. To come on here and read such poisionous comments scattered in such a general way really gets my blood boiling. This may have caused me to overreact and as the main perpetrator I directed my attacks at you. This was perhaps wrong and for that I appologise.

As for your statment that 15% of memebers of private clubs attended adult parties you do not surprise me. The other 85% were probably at my house! ;-)

As an aside, I tend to find that people notice crimes that confirm to their expectations. Mugging in Peckham? Well, what do you expect. Mugging in Fulham? How unlucky, poor you.

I'm not saying Fulham isn't safer than Peckham, but the difference in safety between the two is nowhere near as big as people think.

It was worse than a sh1thole before they built on it, Hoss.

Beckton Gas Works was the biggest gas works in the world, their land stretched from Creekmouth (Galleons Reach) down to Eisenhower Drive (half way between ASDA and Custom House on Stansfield Road.

It was all marshes, apart from the prefabs around Eisenhower Drive and the housing estate at Cyprus. It's now covered in private housing, mostly non-blacks, but a lot of chinese, who cause no trouble.

My betting shop was one mile away in Custom House (but the yuppies renamed it West Beckton) in Tollgate Road. And between the houses in Beckton Road and Eisenhower Drive was an abbattoir and a meat processing plant.

It facking stank on a summers day and if there was a westerly breeze, all the houses had to close their windows.

West Ham dog track closed in the early 70s, that was all built over with houses, and the Beckton estates were started a few years later.

The only pub down that way was The Ferndale in Cyprus Place, which use to be a bus terminus, and Terry Spinks betting shop was next door, which was sold to City T.ote.

Thornton Heath is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of what has happened to London!

In 1967 my friends Parents moved to "Suburban" Thornton Heath as the Black Guys who moved to Kennington/Stockwell made it a dangerous place to live, which it never was before.

Fast forward 20 years and all the Guys who moved to TH have moved out, further, to Kent/Surrey/Sussex as Thornton Heath became like "Little Jamaica" and by a miraculous co=incidence the crime rate, on the streets, soared.

I can think of 50 "Thornton Heaths" and I LOVE to shake the naive heads of some younger people who just CAN NOT or DO NOT want to realise the impact that these Guys "in numbers" have on any place in any Inner City....

Thats "WOULD LOVE" lol....its the most frustrating point about getting older.

I GUARANTEE that all Londoners over 40 will tell you EXACTLY the same and yet these young guys refuse to believe it.

Of course, its a certainty, that after another 30 years they WILL realise it ( "it" being a large number of Black Guys WILL send the CRime rate on the streets rocketing.

Then THEY will tell the new younger Generation who have not experienced it yet and at that point refuse to believe it! :)

ASTA is Andrew Street Tenants Association. You can tell how old the club is by the fact that Andrew Street doesn't exist any more as it got bombed in the war. It was run by the Leahy brothers the last time I was in there, which was about 10 years ago.

My darts team had a clean sweep of the trophies in 1996, all bar one. We won the singles championship, pairs champioship, fours championship, knockout cup (8 a side) captains cup, highest check out (170 - in the singles champioship semi-final by my captain, he beat a player who I had layed for £500 to £100 to win the final, and he had 32 left when my man went to the oche) and the most 180s scored by a team in a season. The only trophy we didn't win was the secretaries cup. The ASTA secretary came from 3-0 down to beat our secretary 5-4.

I was our secretary :(

- also loved in St pauls in Bristol for 3 years without a hint of trouble.

too much information :) !!

Ironically the places mentioned right at the start of this thread as the nice friendly places are the ones that make me think twice. Islingtons a minefield, they'd gut you as soon as look at you round there!

London's soft as sh!t compared to the north (NAP). Oh there's a war on, quick let's all hide in the tube. Oh there's a millimetre of snow, let's all shut everything down & make a big deal of it on the news. FFS...

did pis5 myself at this considering everyone up north is about 25 stone 50 years old and don a moustache

It used to be a bit unseemly at Harvey Nick's bar trying to get served a while ago.

I've lived in Brixton for 3 years and it's not too bad. Generally you won't get in trouble unless you go looking for it. Mind you - there do seem to be a lot of sirens every night though :(

Stonebridge Park is nearly as bad as Djibouti !!. I managed a shop not a million miles from there a good few years ago on the North Circular road in Neasden just opposite a pub called the Pantiles, The armoury in the back of the shop left by the previous manager was impressive!!

Mind you id managed places in Harelsden, Kilburn, Bethnal Green and Commercial road so i really should have been either dead or Certified

You tend to be foolish when you are young

All this anti London nonsense is ignorant rubbish. There are some dumps in town but there are dumps in every town and every area. A lot of the areas mentioned are a bit mixed but to class them broadly as sh!tholes is nonsense. Hackney for example ranges from the 'Murder mile', which as its name suggests isn't ideal for bringing up a young family, to London Fields, which is one of the nicest areas east of the city and highly recommended on all fronts. Much of Hackney reaches neither extreme of course, but it certainly isn't all a sh!thole.....similar comments could apply to Brixton, Tooting etc etc.

I live in London and it isn't perfect but i definitely wouldn't swap it. For a man with a family it's probably not the best place to live, but if you are young and want to enjoy your life for me it's the best place to live in this country.

Belated thanks Big Charlie; that was really interesting. All the roads in lower Limehouse where my dad's family lived are all bulldozed now too. Btw, still love London (and the bit that was once in Essex!)

Report zilzal1 • January 11, 2010 10:20 PM GMT
Anyone remember Masseys LOL, you had a different colour ticket for every day of the week as they hadnt got carbon slips(circa 1979) oh well at least they let you change the camera yourself!!

We were visiting the wifes grandparents in Manor Park (Manure Park to locals) about 15 years ago, and there was a Masseys betting shop almost next door to their shop.

I put a bet on and left it at that. In the next days paper I saw that I had am 11/8 winner and a non- runner.

It was about 4 months before I was over that again, and the shop had changed hands.

Feckers still owe me £11-87p :(

i have lived in isle of dogs, leyton and balham and been out in a lot of london. tooting not too bad. great curries.

for those saying brixton is sopft as these days. it might be fashionable but there is till plenty of proper diodgy cu**s hanging around looking to cause problems.

came out of brixton tube couple months ago for a concert. literally about 15 black dudes stood on a corner openly selling drugs and intimidating everyone walking past.

lots of crack and smack heads hanging around looking for someone to rob, rip off etc. wasnt impressed to be honest and would never live there.

as previouysly mentioned it is how you carry yourself which matters. why would a mugger pick on someone confident who might fight back when there is some mug who is scvared of own shadow who will be along in 5 mins....
