Haven't been on a bus for 25 years. I'm not sure what to expect and need some forum pointers.

For example, does one tip the bus driver and might some of the people be a little offensive 'on the nose'?

Thanks
Londis

Report Reyes • January 11, 2010 9:35 PM GMT
you need to have EXACTLY the right amount for the fare, but have no idea beforehand a) how much it is, b) what ticket you even need and c) where you might actually want to get off the blasted thing.
It's like a quadratic equation with 18 variables ffs.

Make sure to pay with a £20 - the driver will be your friend for ever.

I didn't realise taking a bus was for the clever ones
Report garlicbread • January 11, 2010 9:36 PM GMT
All of that is putting me off. Might have to get a taxi.
Report carvoeiro • January 11, 2010 9:36 PM GMT
See if the numbers on the ticket adds upto 21.

Anyone do this on the school bus ?
Report punterfleecer • January 11, 2010 9:37 PM GMT
the amount of answers this thread took in a short time, no wonder public transport is expensive

I wish A. Darling put 7p on every litre of petrol like Thatchers did with cigarettes!
Report PLASTIC PADDY • January 11, 2010 9:40 PM GMT
You add up the numbers on the ticket and that corresponds to the letter of the alphabet of the one you luurve
Report cunnybobbler • January 11, 2010 9:40 PM GMT
i once saw a group of townies get on, they asked how much it was then said its too expensive and theyd get a taxi instead. i think they thought it was 5p seeing as only poor people use them.

Just called my brother. He's a little more 'high street' than me and apparently it's five pounds return to Taunton.

Most disagreeable. Shall certainly take a taxi now.

Town centre Buses have changed a lot in the last 25 years.

Now all buses have internet access ,wi fi ... DVD players and Sky movies...on board meals and coffee served on the 34A into town ,aswell as reclining massage chairs .

No smoking anymore though

if you lot don't know how to take a bus, how are you going to teach your kids?
Report carvoeiro • January 11, 2010 9:45 PM GMT
Do all the hard boys either go upstairs or sit on the banch seat at the back ?
Report a bitofinterest • January 11, 2010 9:46 PM GMT
depends on the weather..
Report garlicbread • January 11, 2010 9:46 PM GMT
My other concern is that I live in a cul-de-sac and when the bus arrives it might be difficult for the driver to turn it round.
Report Reyes • January 11, 2010 9:47 PM GMT
wait on right side of road so he's facing the right way then - have a heart

Report cunnybobbler • January 11, 2010 9:49 PM GMT
the advantage of a bus is you can walk about 50ft and get one, you dont have to phone up, have someone say "its a bit busy this morning" and wait half an hour.
Report Mc Moonbeam • January 11, 2010 9:51 PM GMT
no ... you just wait the half an hour instead :|
Report punterfleecer • January 11, 2010 9:52 PM GMT
you actually get people who aren't so lazy i.e. me
Report cunnybobbler • January 11, 2010 9:52 PM GMT
not if you look up the timetable on the net and are cunning enough to know which ones turn up on time and which are always late cos theyre stuck in traffic ;)

nice thread

I am a regular user of public transport, have been for 40 years ,and have lost count the number of arguments i have had with bus drivers/conductors.they are the most jobsworthy people on earth, you would think its there money, after you have gone past the stop you have paid for,or i am not accepting that Scottish £20 note,or the dreaded you can not get on this bus with that burger and *****

ps i am in a long standing case involving misuse of a bus pass which was not my fault, due to an oversight by a transport inspector,my solicitor thinks i will win the case if it goes to court.
Report cunnybobbler • January 11, 2010 10:30 PM GMT
they dont like you not having the exact change, though not in too many coins. if its £4 then 4 pound coins are acceptble but a £5 note is nearly a criminal offence. but on the other hand 2 pound coins, 2 50s and 5 20s is usually frowned upon also. its advisable to carry a small bank with you on every journey. also you need to know the bus driver code for where you want to get off. if say just outside the nags head pub the driver presses lots of buttons then reads some laminated card thing and says you mean "lower bottom nortonfield south" oh do i? do i really?

cos my incident was a crappy soft one, i'd need to give them a soft nod to make sure they were taken
Report Mc Moonbeam • January 11, 2010 10:38 PM GMT
in parts of the West Mids the drivers are encased behind bullet proof glass

you simply drop the EXACT change into a thin slot (there's no time or room for discussion here-the regulars know the drill)
the bus driver (who speaks brief broken english) will STARE at you ! .. STARE at your change in said slot .. STARE back at you (i assume to double check your not on any Bus Terrorist List) ..

then WHACKS a big button which whizzes you a ticket out :|
Report punterfleecer • January 11, 2010 10:40 PM GMT
;) mcmoonbeam, the bulletproof glass, well is it?, is in Glasgow and Dundee too
Report punterfleecer • January 11, 2010 10:41 PM GMT
The north as well as Scotland is just as rough thank you!
Report cunnybobbler • January 11, 2010 10:42 PM GMT
they have the glass here but theres quite a big gap which seems to defeat the purpose really.
