they're a proper club with proper history. they've produced some of the greatest footballing moments for me in the last 20 years and are by far the most successful club of last 20 years and are fast catching up with liverpool for the title of best english club of all time.

i agree the commercialisation of the game is a bit w.anky, and I don't like it. SKY tv and the premiership itself are as responsible for this as anyone.

In terms of trophies they are, just, the second best english team ever. And they were more exciting than Liverpool. I grew up with Liverpool winning everything and they were boring as fek, and everyone hated them.

All genuine fans who support teams from the area they grew up in, have a healthy dislike for other teams, especially the local rivals.

However the 2nd greatest dislike is for the team that is regarded as the best, I'm old enough to remember this same vehemence targetted at Leeds in the 70s,

I'm not necessarily a genuine fan, just follow lutons results but don't really know too much about the players and that and haven't seen them for 1 years. Was a mega fanatic when i was young, but started living in different places, couldn't watch them, and lost contact with the people i used to go with unfortunately. A shame I admit.

As someone who has watched football for 40 years, am not English, don´t support a team and no longer live in the UK I find it a bit surprising too. As a football purist I just like to see good entertaining attacking football. None of this score one and shut up shop shiite.

To my eyes Man Utd, along with the likes of Barcelona and Wenger´s Arsenal, are one of the few teams nowadays who always try to score goals and entertain. They might not always achieve it but at least they try.

Unlike Madrid, Chelsea and now Man City, Utd have - especially under Fergie - always given young players a chance and even though they have had in the past a lot of money available, haven´t always spent it to try to buy success.

I think the reason other teams´fans hate them so much can only be explained in one word: jealousy.

Because United started the Disneyfication

I think the Bosman ruling created the Disneyfication.

When I was a kid I wrote off to all the (then) first Division clubs asking for their autographs. All sent me back but UTD sent me back the autographs along with a large package on the history of Man UTD and other goodies with a catalogue, they even sent me my stamp back.

I don't support anyone in England (soft spot for Burnley perhaps) but it isn't a wonder they are the biggest club in the world.

As a Man City supporter, local rivallry dictates I'm not a great fan of Man Utd. Would say hatred is a bit strong, but there are a few things which leave a sour taste.

1. The treatment some of the Busby Babes received after the disaster was very poor. One of them, Albert Scanlon (RIP) ended up working on Salford Docks FFS.

2. Lads who I grew up having no interest in football, suddenly becoming armchair experts and referring to Utd as "we". One clown recently tried educating me that "Liverpool have never won the league".

3. Utds indifference to fans who followed them home and away during the barren years, being priced out from watching a game.

4. Despite having an amazing record in terms of trophies, the ramblings and whining of SAF every time they drop points is becoming tiresome.

I have several friends who are Utd fans who'd generally agree with most of the above.

As for City having no history, in recent times there's been a lack of success. However they've still won 8 domestic trophies (lost 5 finals) and a European club competition.

They still hold the record attendance for an Englsh game played outside Wembley, 84,569
Report RockMonkey • January 10, 2010 1:01 PM GMT
The reason I started 'hating' Man U growing up in the 70's was the unbearably superior attitude of the supporters about a club who, at the time, were pretty much a laughing stock in terms of on-field performances, even managing to get relegated at one stage.
With this ineptness (in title terms) carrying on through the 80's, coupled with the appointment of an absolute clown like Atkinson then the obnoxious khunt that is Ferguson, it was pretty easy to maintain and justify this level of contempt, accompanied as it still was by the 'biggest club in the world' b0ll0x from the MU fans.
All of these feelings had, or indeed have, nothing to do with any on field success, because these feelings were generated despite any such success. It baffles me why anyone could dislike a team purely because they are successful.
Nowadays, as a bitter, twisted cynic, my contempt for MU extends way past them to the dubiously funded Chelski & beyond to the whole no-morals game we have today.

Fans of lower league teams (such as luton for example) leaning towards them because they're successful and on TV every week. 1.01 the OP cheers when they score.

If your team was in the Premiership you suddenly hate them as well. The refs, fergie time etc. Your team is up against a massive handicap before the game as started. Not to mention the media love-in Giggs winning SPOTY and Player of the Year without actually doing anything is a prime example.

Thankfully this season there has been a turning of the tide, people are beginning to speak out. With 700m of crippling debt and a team full of mediocre players their bubble is about to burst. I can't wait.

I'm not a United fan but embitterred as they have the biggest worldwide support, the biggest stadium in the UK, the widest support in England and Ireland from Devizes to Dublin, are the most glamourous Club, have a fantastic tradition since "The Busby Babes" who were everyones 2nd Club, had "Law,Best and Charlton", had George Best the first "Pop Star" Footballer, have mountains of money, always play attractive Football in the 50 years that I have watched The Beautiful Game, have the most successful Manager of all-time in The UK and have won countless trophies lately and are known all over the world from Stalingrad to Saigon to Singapore to Swaziland.

While Fergie´s post match rants have become as tiresome as they are predictable, why are football fans still so naive about it? SAF may not be the world´s greatest tactician but when it comes to manmanagement and the psychological mindgames involved there is nobody wiser.

When Fergie rants it is usually for two reasons: the first is to make officials wary of making decisions against his team and to secure better treatment and therefore better chances for his team; the second is ´distraction´, to avert the spotlight away from a poor team performance/poor tactics/ team selection or whatever, onto the referee, a dodgy decision, lack of time added or whatever.

How many times have you read the headline after a Man Utd defeat about a poor/unfit match official? Or a dodgy decision? Or unfair fixture list? Or terrible tackle? Rarely if ever is the headline about how badly Utd played. All this does is shield the players and SAF from speculation that they might not be good enough. Fergie often takes the heat so that his players don´t have to - not publicly at any rate.

Love him or loathe him this is what a fully committed club manager does and Utd will lose much more than just a team manager when he goes.

I think you might find that the proportion of the population that 'hates' Man. Utd. (or any other team, for that matter) is vey small. Most people have little real interest in football apart from watching it as a sport on TV.
I think the game in gebneral does itsself no favours by allowing unruly, ill-disciplined behaviour on the pitch and many of the matches are won or lost on incorrect refereeing decisions. Take control of the game, ref. Managers should take control of their players and punish foul tactics, including things like claimiing it's your throw-in when you know it isn't! Let's see it played in the spirit of a skilled, athletic event and may the best team win.
Obviously I know nothing about Football. :D
