in terms of overall quantity brit bands rule the roost, but in quality id say its pretty close
u can take the beach boys and equal them with the beatles
pixies and ramones equal the brit punk bands altho theres obviously more over here we know of
joy division? we can argue yanks have interpol

as for canada, well arcade fire are better than ALL brit bands put togtehr!

The Trashmen's Surfin' Bird (1963) was a Beamon like leap forward in R&R. They deserve a mention too.

The Hold Steady

Band of Horses
Fleet Foxes
Interpol
Decemberists
Wilco
Lambchop
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Vampire Weekend
Sufjan Stevens
Silversun Pickups
My Morning Jacket
Mercury Rev

Two have already got it. Without the Velvet Underground most of the bands on this thread would not exist.

Hippy era: Jimmy Hendrix. My old man saw first uk tour and was in shock, changed his life.

Accessible indie: Pixies. A riot live. Saw their second ever gig in uk. 50 people there. Eighteen months later headlined Reading.

Whoever said The Velver Underground were the most influential is right, but personally I didn`t really care for them or their derivatives.
Dylan, Young, Hendrix, and Springsteen were/are all great but more solo artists really.
Agree about the lack of black bands but the Motown greats were vocal groups strictly speaking. Some jazz groups such as various Miles Davies combos should probably be included but I don`t know enough about jazz.

"Hippy era: Jimmy Hendrix. My old man saw first uk tour......"

I seen his first UK tour which was the one with The Walker Brothers,
Cat Stevens, and Englebert Humperdinck also on the bill. Amazing line-up
you'd never normally have put them together, The Walker Brothers were the biggest stars
at that time, and the others including Hendrix were just starting in their early years.
Hendrix was amazing, but main reason went to see that show was to see Cat Stevens.
Report gunghadhin • January 9, 2010 4:44 PM GMT

gunghadhin - that is what package tours were like in the 60's,
put several singers and groups together and do a tour, each appearing on stage for about 20 - 30 mins.

It was a shock to see somebody like Hendrix, especially with the unlikely co-stars,
and I think Hendrix was only third on the bill behind The Walker Brothers and Cat Stevens,
This was only a few months after he released his first record Hey Joe.

At that period in the 60's it was mainly groovy groups and a clean-cut image -
that is why The Rolling Stones were so diferent, but Hendrix was something else,
I know there was one show which was the closing night of the Monterey Pop Festival,
and even The Who flatly refused to go on stage after Hendrix for fear of being upstaged.
