This would obviously mean only people with money in their accounts could post. I think it would be a very good idea. It would reduce the number of nonsense threads and posts and if all the monies raised were donated to a very worthy charity like a children's hospice who could possibly moan?
I cannot see a downside at all.

Posting to forums and message boards is a great way to get traffic, network with potential clients and brand yourself in the online community. Posting to forums and message boards doesn't cost any money and can be done in your spare time.

Posting on niche market forums can be an effective means of getting targeted traffic to your capture pages PLUS networking with people who are into the same things that you are. The coolest thing about joining and posting on message boards is that every post you leave will have what is known as a signature file left on it (which will contain a link to your capture page but more on that later).

The beauty behind marketing on forums isn't that you go out and directly advertise your product, service, opportunity on the board, in fact I do the complete opposite! Get involved in the community and leave your signature file on every post you make. Think of your signature file as your footprint that you get to leave behind every time you make a post on a forum/message board. It always stays there, steering targeted and interested visitors to your capture page.

As long as you use discussion boards wisely and don't break any of the board rules, you can get access to huge marketing benefits. Not just in terms of people getting to know and respect your expertise, but in terms of the traffic you'll receive from the links that are attached to your posts and signature files.

Read on for more.

How To Master Forum Marketing
Step #1 - Understand the concept Of Marketing on Message Boards/Forums

Although you could just use your primary capture page, you can greatly increase your opt in rate by creating a page specifically for the traffic coming from the posts that you make on message boards.

You want to build a specific capture system page for 2 very important reasons:

* The page you create can speak directly to the audience that is viewing it. If you know that everyone who will see this page just came from a message board, you can customize the page to reflect that.

* You want to keep specific stats on how much traffic you get from posting on message boards and how many people opt in to become leads from this strategy.

Step #2 - Build a capture page that will ONLY be used for Forum Marketing

There are a couple of other things you should always aim to do when making a splash page;

* Focus the page so it is directed at the audience coming from the message board posts. For example if you like golf and are posting to forums on that topic, add a picture of you a the golf course with a heading like..."Here I am at _____! The reason I am able to spend 20 hours a week playing golf is......Let me show you how I was able to achieve my dream...."

* The page should be clean and has a set color scheme that matches the background. Not to much color, I would stick to 2 or 3 at the most.

* Have your name and information plastered all over the page. When you follow up with this person, you want them to already have a picture in their mind that you are someone who can show them how to achieve success and solve their problems. The reader should also know that you value you time, so be sure to detail you office hours. This is the power of "positioning" when using your capture page!

Just getting my money's worth.

That's okay, so what if all the nonsense still gets posted. If it is raising money for a very good cause, who cares? surely nobody would be so mean as to begrudge a penny a post, and the combined posting of all of us could raise a worthwhile donation to give to a deserving cause at christmas

Report Dan Chipowski • December 22, 2009 10:54 PM GMT
Nowt to do with being hard up at all. If I had a million quid in my account (I don't) I wouldn't pay 1p to post.

I don't gamble anymore, therefore when I came back on the forum I lodged a tenner, stuck it on something and lost it. And won't be lodging again until i'm told I have to, to post (If that day ever arises). Absolutely nothing to do with the financial side of it, it's do with having to pay to post on a forum, something i'd never do.

Report munch man • December 22, 2009 10:58 PM GMT

i believe nearly everyone is charitable at heart, even if they come across as heartless gits on here sometimes. if you knew that your penny was going to as noble as cause as helping sick kids, or the homeless, or keeping the elderly warm, or something equally worthwhile, surely this would be a good idea.
Report mitchell downie • December 22, 2009 11:01 PM GMT
Well munch, there's over a million threads in the archive, going back say 4 years? Multiply a million by say an average of 20 posts a thread and divide by 4 and you get, ermm 5 million a year. lol
Report Dan Chipowski • December 22, 2009 11:01 PM GMT
If they went ahead with this, i'd have no objection and i'm sure the great majority wouldn't. I wouldn't post though, if I want to give money to charitable causes (I rarely do :D ) I'd choose them myself.

Report Lies, DamnLies, and Statistics • December 22, 2009 11:56 PM GMT
why would it be??

because about 80% of threads here seem to be fishing atm

i actually like your idea, BUT i don't support paying just to post, because it would probably get rid of good value posters who aren't well off or philosophically disagree, unless that money was returned from your next commission

but that could be too hard to organise, so maybe a 'matched bet in the last week rule' might get rid of some of the loons who start those fishing threads

i really do not think anyone would be paying more than small change in a week, and if at the end of the year we could see that several thousand pounds went to a very worthy cause it would be a real feel good factor for us all to thibk we had helped St Barts, or a kiddies hospice or something like that - something that nobody would begrudge giving a few quid to.

Must be two posts a minute on chit chat alone. - 2500/day. about 1 million a year on chitchat.

That is a v.rough estimate, because from 2am to 8am you might only get a few dozen posts fullstop. Where as some quiz threads will get 1000+ on their own in 2 and a halfhours or so.

1 million from chit chat.

so I would guess something similar (or more?) from horse racing and football. = 3 million. must be at least 5 million/year across all fora imo.
Report munch man • January 9, 2010 4:22 PM GMT
if your calculations are correct positively4street, then maybe 1p is too much. a halfpenny would generate plenty. I only suggested a penny because I thought everyone could spare a few pennies and it would be an easy figure to deduct from an account.
