Agree re Killers - Hot Fuss was very good, Sams Town was vastly inferior but had it's moments but since then they have just vanished up their own arses and produced utter shoite, shame.

Of course music is all about personal taste, but I've more respect for someone who admits to listening to stuff not deemed 'cool' because that just happens to float their boat. So few 'mainstream' acts get mentioned on these threads it is laughable. They can't all be mature students and virgins who embrace all the crap spouted in the NME.

HRH - Its far more 'fun' to listen to stuff late at night (as I used to sans wifey and kid) and 'discover it'. Not anyones fault it becomes more well-known. In the last three years I have only gone balistic about two songs, 'What you could have won' by MIlburn, and Commercial Breakdown by Sunshine Underground. They ae really the only two bands that have excited me throughout that period and continue to do so with any back-catalogue and future projects (such as Backhanded Compliments or The Book Club). I cannot help that

CUPRA - wasn't having a pop at you, apologies if it came across that way! Just a general observation of this forum and beyond that a lot of bandwagons seem to get jumped on to the extent of being unbelievably oversubscribed.

The first Editors & the two Interpol albums were good too, despite them being unashamed Joy Division copyists. The same applies, to a lesser degree, to The White Lies album. The first Franz Ferdinand album was excellent - and the last Blur one (Think Tank).

shame about ray; thought Dreamt for Lightyears in the Belly of a Mountain was best by Sparkelhorse.
For me Illinois by Sufjan Stevens was the best album of the last ten years.

Catford - 2 great choices, Vivadixie... every track on the album, to me, are class. Considering its their debut as well. Only The Stone Roses have done a better debut (best album ever)

Agreed - Illinois is a complete one-off, unlike anything I had heard before. The first time I listened to it all the way through left me gobsmacked

Just thinking the same thing, your highness. I cannot decide though whether to go to the pub and risk life and limb, pavements like skating rinks, or stay in and drink.

This thread just reminds me what a poor decade its been for music. Much like the 90s when the charts were full of 'Dance' music, the Spice Girls and novelty records, the noughties charts have been dominated by Simon Cowell products and American teen tripe.
I know if you delve deeper theres plenty of good stuff being produced, i just long for the times when the good artists got heard, became popular, and made the charts.

I'm not sure that those days ever happened - loads of great bands from 80's and 90's and 00's never made it big, mainly because the record companies pumped all their advertising and marketing into mega money making acts like Michael Jackson, Elton John, Maria Carey etc rather than supporting and developing talented musicians/groups over a longer period of time. Thats why a fair number of the bands on this list are not household names - these bands succeeded in getting their music heard despite the music business, not because of it. Thank fk for the internet, myspace, online radio and live gigs. - the record labels no longer have any power as there is no money to be made in selling CD's. Giving away you music for free ( Radiohead, Prince etc) is the proof of that and is the way forward.

BigH - i totally agree with your sentiments on how music is going, maybe in 5 years no-one will buy recorded music, and that'll be a good thing imo.
But what i said certainly happened in the 60s and 70s, great acts like Roxy Music, Bowie, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, even Elton John, all came from nothing, got themselves heard, some word of mouth, some ballsy Radio DJs, and their brilliant music dominated the album and singles charts.

fairweather - I agree with your list of those that made it (all in the list are exceptionally talented) but there are still loads that potentially could have been just as good that didn't make it.
