Snow up to the rooftops ( slight exageration ) but ive seen photos of it as high as a train, no kidding.Big drifts up to 6ft tall up on Saddleworth Moor today, the Farmer who lives in the middle of the M62 must have it rough up there.
62/63 winter wouldnt have looked out of place in Poland or Romania .absolutely freezing cold compared with any winter since.78/79 looks to be the coldest of the last 40 years according to the met office figs http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/st

All this talk on the news about this winter being the coldest since 1981 is all speculation ,the winter in the met office terms is dec,jan ,feb ...so we are only a month in.
And the BBC seem to be clueless .The bloke reading the weather earlier seemed somewhat surprised about the near freezing temperatures in Madrid (quite the norm in winter) ,as if it were freezing in Tenerife or somewhere !! ..... where do they hire these guys from ?

Looking at the London figures..... it is now 19 years since we had a month where the average MINIMUM temperatures were below freezing point .
February 1991 .
So that one could be broken this month .

lol rockin horse, the st bernard schnorbiz was funnier. getting back to that farmer, he wouldnt budge when they built the m62, so they split the motorway and built it round the farm.He must have about 100,000 cars and lorries passing by every 24 hrs.

Stott Hall Farm (53°38′30″N 1°57′08″W / 53.641599°N 1.952222°W / 53.641599; -1.952222 (Stott Hall Farm)) is an 18th-century farm on Windy Hill, situated between the two carriageways of the motorway between junctions 22 and 23.[20][31][32] The road forks around the farm for engineering reasons owing to the surrounding area's geology, though a local myth persists that the road had to be split because the owners refused to sell the land during its construction.[20] This is not the case since the owners could have been obliged to sell via a compulsory purchase order. Due to its remoteness in the Pennines, the farm is often nicknamed as "the Little House on the Prairie". The farm is now separated from the motorway by crash barriers and a high fence to keep livestock in and drivers out, after some stranded motorists attempted to get aid when broken down.[20][33] The farm, which was occupied by Ken and Beth Wild at the time of the motorway's opening,[31] is now farmed by Paul Thorp.[20] Due to its unusualness, it is one of the ten best-known sights from the motorway network[34] and one of the best-known sights in West Yorkshire.[33] The farm was used as a location for an early episode of ITV drama series, Where the Heart Is and has been the subject of a short documentary film.[35]

1947 was worst (best) for snowfall and 1963 worst (best) for cold. Not that I experienced either but that is what people say. Looking at the periods since records began in the early 1900's only. I'm sure many of the Victorian ones and before were worse.
Everyone is banging on about the weather saying "ooh it's a blizzard out there" but the truth is for it to be a blizzard the AVERAGE wind speed has to be above 30mph. So far this winter that has not happened in my experience. Not saying this is true everywhere but in general away from areas like the Cairngorms I imagine this to be the case.
In 1947 there were many blizzards. There was 1.5 metres of level snowfall which was blown into huge drifts by the blizzards.
The news are also hyping up this cold spell saying its the worst since 1981. What they mean is it is the most sustained spell of cold (for northern parts of the UK only) since 1981. There were a number of winters in the later 1980's where the cold snaps were more severe only to be interupted by a short mild spell then a return to a severe cold snap.
The BBC news seem to be always looking for an angle to try and present the situation as something more extreme than it is and panic people in the process. It's winter FFS it should be cold not the crappy mild that we always got until recently!
