In Manchester and Oxford last night. That'll toughen up the southern softies. Glasgow's getting -20 at the weekend. -42 in Norway, though. The birds must be dropping out of the trees.
my old man said to me over christmas "when i was a young fella it was a lot colder than this we just didn't have anything to measure it with" .. he was 100% serious as well

This island business. The issue is not whether a place is or is not an 'island'. The issue is proximity to the sea. In winter, the sea is always warmer than the land. So coastal areas tend to be warmer than those inland which are not influenced by the warmer water. Small islands are nothing but coastal areas and therefore tend to be warmer than the inland (only the inland) areas of nearby mainland. Britain is far too big for its inland areas to be affected by the warmer surrounding seas. The Isle of Man and the Outer Hebridies are not and tend to be warmer than mainland GB.
