We had the start of it over 2 weeks ago here in Scotland. Began with the slippiest black ice I've ever seen. I fell my length and got a bloodied hand. Local lollipop lady broke her ankle in 2 places. They had to cancel hip replacement and other ops that people had been waiting ages for to treat all the casualties at the hospital.
The one car that was in the ditch at the top of our road was the only accident in the surrounding ungritted country lanes for over a week.
Until this morning, it's now two cars in the ditch.
There are drivers, and there are drivers.

You've called it yourself mate - all very well letting the Third Party insurers do everything for you (I dare bet they**over backwards for you initially) but you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll settle at the terms which are best for them. ie, you'd get more compo by going through a seperate firm.
