They bought their detached house in the north for £30,000 in 1982 which apparently is a big deal of money in the north.
They sold it for £58,000 in 1990 and bought another detached house that's actually smaller in which they still live in now for £58,000
does that not signify an almost 100% rise in house price in 8 years under the Tory government?
Obviously still affordable, and rather ironic, as your original post was claiming that for those with a mortgage at that time life was tough as interest rates were 14% under the Tories throughout 1990!!

you have to bear in mind that my mum and dad's mortgage was still £30,000 in 1990 as they made £28,000 on the first house they sold and used that as deposit for the new house

£58,000 in 1990 affordable for those in the north?
plus with 14% interest on top
Completely swerving the points aren't you, it obviously was affordable else your parents would not have been able to sell it would they? And that someone was willing to buy it with rates at 14% makes a lie to the claim that mortgagees were struggling, its not the rate that matters its the price you pay. how many homes would sell at todays prices if rates were 14%?

actually funnily enough, new flats and houses have just been build right across the road from my place, they are not filled up, why not?
cos punters are willing not to be fleeced by private companies, these flats are way overpriced, and no-one is willing to buy it
and they are not putting the house prices down to a reasonable level or else the company will go bust.......those flats and houses are "assets" to the bank, and the bank must be willing to wait until the housing market picks up
those houses should be sold at a price right now, but it seems the company and banks are unwilling to do so

The couple that bought it off my mum and dad must've had a massive deposit themselves.
I'm afraid I don't know regarding the situation of first-time buyers in 1990, do you?

Sold to first timers in 1989, a large semi in Bromley, south London suburbs, £78K, paid £11K for it in 1975, double digit rates for most of that period, and thats my point, its the price not the rates. That property would be out of reach for any normal first timer today because of price, they would happily pay double the rates at half the price.

£78k would be regarded as extremely expensive in 1989 up here
I'm not swerving here, but I don't think we can talk on the same level regarding house price between London, and houses near the English / Scottish border
And in the Tory era, all the money was in London, I think Margaret Thatcher didn't give a fυck about the North

With prices rising again why would they not wait until the price comes up to meet them?, with financing so cheap they probably think they are sitting on an appreciating asset (they are wrong). Much the same reason the banks are holding onto repossesed property instead of auctioning it off, as they were doing twelve months ago.

Well that's the answer I was looking for.
So basically private builders and banks are encouraging house price rises? and what can the government do about it?
This is an ongoing problem that was always going to happen and not whatever Government that's in power
You also have the problem of is it worth it that the Government builds "council houses" because all over this country, there is this notion of "moving into a council house is for chavs" so no-one will move into them and that's a fact of life, in the same way we complain about windmills yet they are everywhere in the Netherlands
If Gordon Brown has to face the attitudes of the potential house buyers that they'll not move into a "council house" then is it worth him spending the UK's money on houses no-one will move into and perhaps better off spending it elsewhere?

He can start by Building the 3million homes he pledged, what are we suppossed to believe, its beyond the wit of this Glubberment to build and sell homes!! Its rediculous to claim its not the government responsibility to ensure the housing needs of the population are met, they may not succeed but they have a responsibility to try. As cancellor Brown simply poured more and more money into the same housing stock with rediculous schemes such as grants for essential workers, if you dish out £30k to house hunters without increasing supply you can guarantee that the exsisting stock will increase in value by £30k, all of those millions should have gone into building houses.
