Speaks a lot of sense. Why indeed would God (if he exists) worry about the outcome of a sporting contest if he doesn't give a monkey's about people being murdered every day of the year?

Apologies, it happened in 2007. Didn't realise.

Been speaking about it recently though.

Edwards famously prayed before taking part in competitions but now says he feels "slightly embarrassed" about how devoutly Christian he once was.

"I think I was probably quite narrow-minded and fundamental in my views and a bit of a scary person," the former Olympic champion told Sky News.

"I believed that what I believed was the truth. Some of those extremes I feel slightly embarrassed about now, but overall no regrets.

"It was where I was at the time - it's not where I am now."

Edwards added he now thinks it is "nonsense" that praying to God could help a sportsman before a competition.

"My prayers were always that God would give me the strength to do the best that I could do. Somehow athletes feel it's a lucky charm," he said.

"They believe that if they believe in God, He will give them the strength to win.

"That has to be a nonsense - why would God be concerned with the outcome of a sporting contest?

"When you look at the world and there are people starving and dying and suffering, is God going to be so concerned about the outcome of an athletics contest?

"My guess is not. Why would He intervene in something that is just a game?"

guys a **kin disgrace trying to nick the glory from God - I have it on good authority God morphed himself into wind at the 1995 World Championships after making a 'pact' with Edwards to share the glory

watch Philips Idowu break his world record now and God send a subliminal message through Edwards telly - "In yer face ex-speccy"

doesnt look like hes actually lost his faith, just concerned about extremes of God being involved in the outcome of a sporting event so what he says of course makes sense, to pray youll win or score etc is ridiculous

You don't hear it so often now but when (particularly American) athletes or jockeys thanked God for their victories, I've always thought it verging on blasphemy to suggest that God is a race fixer.

Which is roughly what JE seems to be saying.

Is this the guy who once upon a time refused to compete on sundays, because of his beliefs. Soon reassessed his decision when sponsors started to offer $50,000+ to compete.

"If there is no God, does that mean that life has no purpose? Does it mean that personal existence ends at death? They are thoughts that do my head in. One thing that I can say, however, is that even if I am unable to discover some fundamental purpose to life, this will not give me a reason to return to Christianity. Just because something is unpalatable does not mean that it is not true."

I love George Carlin on religion. It's on YouTube. Brilliant stuff.

Talks about the presumptious nature of prayer. If God has a master plan, wtf are you praying for? It will happen if it's in the plan, if it isn't, it won't.

If something doesn't happen and you say 'It was God's will, I guess' then why the **** were you praying in the first place?

Much better to pray to Joe Pesci. A man who gets things done.

bara, God may well know the final outcomes, and maybe prayer could be described as being a waste of time, BUT God for some reason chose humans to participate in his sovereign will and plan, ie were suppose to be friends, and what other way do we have of communicatng if not by prayer?
Mind u he still hasnt got me that new country residence yet ....

George Carlin - what a guy!

Bill Hicks - what a guy! Yet, according to the biography, just before he died, he...well, we better not go into that...

Kaka - what a guy! Love what he says, and love what he says with his legs and feet, etc.

Jonathan Edwards - what a guy! Well worth reading his SPIDER LETTER - a lovely piece of work.
