after years of drinking every weekend and feeling awful for days on end after a heavy night out, enough is enough.
its not enjoyable anymore, the good feeling that you get for a couple of hours when drinking does not account for the 3day hangover.
now the thought of going out and not drinking at all is a non starter, a few drinks loosens the tongue and makes us feel a bit more relaxed, the problem is not going over the line, drinking too much, going out and only having a few drinks is the obvious answer but once one has had a few drinks its easier said than done to stick to this.

so as i'm sure lots of you guys/girls will relate to this, what is the answer, how does one control their drink?

I would agree with a lot of what you say Walter.

Im 27 now and my tolerance to alcohol has gotten a lot worse. When i was 18-23 I used to be able to go out thursday, friday, saturday, sunday nights with practically no sleep and also play football twice in the middle of all that.

Now i take 2 days to recover after a reasonably heavy session. Problem is that me and the mates go out at 6pm say on a friday and get in at 3am-thats a lot of drink!

Iv just bought my first house with the gf which has calmed me down a little, also try and go out a little later now and knock the stupid shots on the head. Cant be doing with wasting a day in bed the day after.

It does get harder to get over with age I dunno why. In the end drinking less and less often is the answer.

Some other tips are:

Eat well before drinking, preferably protien and carbs, avoid fats and sugars.
Avoid mixing drinks, especially grape and grain.
Drinking way past your normal bedtime is also a pitfall
Avoid drinking on consecutive days, and definately have 3 consecutive clear days per week for your liver to rejuvinate.
Asprin works better than other tablets for hangover as it reduces blood pressure, which is what the pounding head is.
Eat well the following day and excersise in the fresh air.

It also helps to drink drinks that are not chemical filth. Try drinking becks, and only becks all night. I'll bet you now you can drink a shedload and feel ok next day. Shots, most british or american brewed lagers are just filth. they are the equivilant of sodastream with chemical flavourings, colourings, and some alcohol thrown in. next time you go to a match, or a big gig, look over the ounter and you can see the shi t being piped in like syrup and added to fizzy water. Shots are also vile. If your going to mess around with shots, then spend your money on a nice brandy and savour it alongside your pint.

look up the bavarian prurity laws, and the czeck republics fights with budweiser, and think abount what they were fighting for. It makes sense. PS - when in prague you can drink 8 or 9 pints of bavarian pure beer which is around 10% abv and feel fine next day. Got to ask yourself why?

I'm packing in totally. I gave it up for 3 weeks in October and regret starting again. It's half a bottle of brandy a day, but it's every day, and I can feel the inflammation in my liver.

I have to taper off, otherwise I get very unpleasant 'jerks' as I'm dropping off to sleep, if I stop suddenly. I bought a bottle of brandy today and there's a quarter bottle left in the last one. Once that's done, I'm finished with it (hopefully).

hangover headaches are caused by dehydration (specifically the shrunken brain pulling on the meninges) not increased blood pressure, so most NSAIDs will be just as effective, I tend to think throwing in a bit codeine helps as well, so neurofen plus (taken about 3 hours before i plan to get up) works well for me.

the best advice i can give to avoid the killer hangovers is to go to bed an hour after you have been your most p1ssed. eat and drink water in that last hour.

crashing out with nothing more than a belly full of unabsorbed shots is the real killer.
Report DStyle • December 28, 2009 3:44 PM GMT
and as for this congener speculation, the primary effectts of a hangover are due to dehydration and ethanal poisoning, both of which are directly contributable to alcohol and nothing else.

Thanks. I don't crave it and I don't get DTs or the shakes as its only a half bottle a day. Just a bad ingrained habit which is affecting my health.
Report DStyle • December 28, 2009 3:53 PM GMT
it's absolutely correct 8sid. iirc chronic exposure to alcohol causes a change in the rate of production of certain liver enzymes which break it down. so yes, if the booze is processed more quickly there's less dehydration effect and less ethanal production - it's fecking terrible for your liver though.
Report TJM • December 28, 2009 3:54 PM GMT
8sid, it changes once you get older. I guess your late twenties, maybe 30?

Dstyle. I understand what you are saying, the difference is that nurofen and the like will cause more problems to the stomach llining when the body is processing alcohol ahead of any food. Short term it is ok, long term is different. In turn this causes more longerterm issues. I have this on good authority, and self observation backs it up. The chemical beers also from self observation have a greater effect, and also when I asked the same noted gastroenterologist he laughed and said, no one knows what is in them, herein lies the problem.
Report DStyle • December 28, 2009 3:56 PM GMT
sorry - just as much ethanal is produced but it's converted into acetate more quickly

nurofen and aspirin are both COX inhibitors so the problems with stomach lining issues are present in both. iirc aspirin has a greater affinity for COX-1 than ibuprofen so the problems are likely to be more severe with aspirin than ibuprofen. i could be wrong though, this is stuff i did a long time ago....

abit of advice is to have a non alcoholic drink inbetween beers, for example 2 bottles of beer then an orange juice/glass of water thena beer then another orange juice and so on

this is all good in theory actually sticking to this after a few beers is the problem

I am going off what a professor told me, specific to me. when I say specific, I hounded him with all kinds of questions and he related my condition to being worsened by chemical beers, both for processing and intestinal permeability issues, and that nurofen would be worse than brufen for the interrelated effects. asprin was the lesser of the two evils, and had some other benefit related to hangover of which I forget. I now take paracetamol anyway and drink less lol. I rarely get proper hangover and if I do it is due to drinking chemical beers or mixing lots of drinks.

Curious about the effects of processing more alcohol quicker. I found this until 30's and then declined and took it much harder. Most of my mates the same. Any idea why this is? Does the liver itself decline after a while of processing at a faster rate?
Report Walter Mitty • December 28, 2009 4:16 PM GMT
TJM apart from becks what other lagers/beers would you reccomend that are not full of unwanted chemicals, tia?
Report TJM • December 28, 2009 6:07 PM GMT
in general bavarian beers, and most belgian beers. Budvar, tuborg, duval etc, but not the British brewed versions of the same thing. I'm not sure what this new draft becks veir is, I suspect it may be british brewed and not bremen but could be wrong. Grolschcan be ok if it is the dutch version, but the UK version is often cack. it is much easier to get bottled beers as they often have the ingredients on, or a claim of purity either bremen or bavairan etc, whereas draft it is harder to know, and you wont get them much from your local unless your drinking camra bitters in which case I am not he person to ask but I guess the same principle applies.

Similarly if drinking sprits, as a rle of thumb the branded ones are made from purer recipes, and the cheaper "house" spirits are often made using ingredients that dont need to be in there but speed up the brewing process. for example, brandy and gin is often made with wheat or corn grains and colourings to disguise the discolouration.

Another point to note is that drinking spirits with a mixer will get the alcohol through your system much quicker. In that it means that the gas in the mixer will prevent as much alcohol from entering the bloodstream, the liver however still has to absorb it. So if your on a long day/night out then drinking spirit mixers will prolong your sobriety over the course of session, liver the effect on the liver is much the same. Studies shown that this affects most people though some were unaffected by the mixer. In hangover terms I guess this works in two ways. The stomach has to deal with the problem much the same, and the overall cumulative effect on the liver is much the same, though headache/alcohol poisening would be less if it has bypassed the bloodbrain barrier. Perhaps DStyle would know more on the likely after effect is.
