Misses has just had this question on her DS and dont think the answer the ds says is correct and she wont believe me that it was wrong, so therefore open to the shrewdies on here !!

Woman goes into a shop and buys a 30 quid pair of shoes and pays with a 50 quid note. The shop keeper doesnt have the right change, so goes to the shop next door and changes the 50 quid note and gives the woman her change.

5 mins later the other shop keeper comes in and says the 50 quid note was fake and the original shopkeeper changes the 50 back.

How much did the original shopkeeper lose out ??

I know that shop... They Don't take £50 notes in there.

There is a sign clearly stating this.
Report Brodie • December 27, 2009 10:04 PM GMT
yep ,he had the fifty that the other shopkeeper gave him less the £20 so on second thought he's lost £20 and a £30 pair of shoes.

£70 :)
Report Robbie_Box • December 27, 2009 10:05 PM GMT
If the Woman was John Terrys Mum then he prob lost about £500 worth of stock that she had stuffed in her bag.

£30 shoes+£20 change+£50 counterfeit.

yes £100
Report TEN2FOLLOWER • December 27, 2009 10:07 PM GMT
£100 is my answer.
Report Brodie • December 27, 2009 10:07 PM GMT
danny, the £50 he got from the other shopkeeper is just given back so levels there.
he loses the £20 and the £30 pair of shoes he gave to the conman in total ;)
Report TEN2FOLLOWER • December 27, 2009 10:08 PM GMT
Even if the shoes didn't cost the shopkeeper £30 then they are worth £30 to his pocket if he can sell them for that much.

Report dannyho12 • December 27, 2009 10:11 PM GMT

then they have conned the cobbler
Report TEN2FOLLOWER • December 27, 2009 10:12 PM GMT

then i dont know
Report DDuck • December 27, 2009 10:14 PM GMT
surely 20!
ignore the fake 50 . the only time he put his hand in the till was to get the 20 change - that's the only money he's lost.
Report TEN2FOLLOWER • December 27, 2009 10:14 PM GMT
what does the DS say?
Report dannyho12 • December 27, 2009 10:17 PM GMT
it says this DS will self destruct in 30 mins if you dont get the correct fckn answer
Report DDuck • December 27, 2009 10:20 PM GMT
20 cash or 50 if including monetary value of shoes.
Report STUDYFORM • December 27, 2009 10:20 PM GMT
The woman gave him 50 and took 20 and a pair of shoes.

He changed the note and then changed it back - so that part is irrelevant.

so it's £20 and a pair of shoes
Report SuperSuperShire • December 27, 2009 10:43 PM GMT
well it depends if you say that the fake £50 is his to spend or not

answer is £70, or £20

Report Far From Trouble • December 27, 2009 11:00 PM GMT
How would the shoe shopkeeper be able to change back the £50 note if he has given the woman £20 of it?

If he can, and has, he would have the correct change to give to the woman in the first place, so wouldn't have needed to go next door

because when the original shopkeeper tells the other shopkeeper that he's changed it now....the other shopkeeper says...i don't give a fook about that i want my 50 quid back.

That's what you get for purchasing your wife's Christmas present from a dodgy geezer in the pub rather than paying top dollar at a reputable retailers, you tight git ;)

sj, you are right !!!

you wait until that dodgy thai guy comes in the pub again, i will stick the pair of shoes up his arse !!
Report duffy • December 27, 2009 11:14 PM GMT
i think i've got the £60 explanation..

shopkeeper 2 gives him 50 changed up
shopkeeper 1 then hands that over to woman...
she then gets the shoes for £30..which the shopkeeper is then down
shopkeeper 2 comes back in and shopkeeper 1 hands over a fresh £30 to him....plus the 20 he had already got from him....so £60 down...ds is right :-)
Report sportsjudge • December 27, 2009 11:14 PM GMT

Report Forgive`n`Forget • December 27, 2009 11:16 PM GMT

there was pretty much feck all in the till anyway :p
Report duffy • December 27, 2009 11:25 PM GMT
christ...now i think it's 70....once the 50 is changed...the woman gets 20 of it...as the shoes are 30....then he has to give the 30 that's left back to the shopkeeper...plus make up the 20 that's gone to the woman....so 20 20 plus the shoes for 30. :-)

Report man of many moods • December 28, 2009 9:56 AM GMT
This is a not-a-puzzle dressed up to look like one. It seems to have caught quite a few.

When the dust has settled...

The woman has exchanged a worthless piece of paper for £50 (shoes 30, cash 20)

Shopkeeper B briefly exchanged the worthless piece of paper for £50 but has exchanged it back again with the same person.
He's neither gained nor lost anything. A red herring.

Shopkeeper A is now in possession of the worthless piece of paper which he's paid £50 for (shoes 30, cash 20)

Shopkeeper A has therefore lost £50 in this transaction, and the woman has gained it.

It's exactly what it seems. It's not a puzzle.

Assuming he makes a profit on his shoes, Shopkeeper A may only have paid £20 for the shoes which he sold for £30.
In that respect he may have only lost £40 instead of £50.

answer £20 plus the shoes .... whats the problem ?
Report toilettennisplayer • December 28, 2009 10:07 AM GMT
lets just say the fake 50 is a worthless token. He gives the token the the other guy, gets 50 quid, keeps 30 (which he didnt have before) and gives the nasty ** 20 change. Then he has to get this 30 - plus another 20 - to give to the other bloke in exchange for the token. So he's lost 20 plus the shoes...
Report toilettennisplayer • December 28, 2009 10:09 AM GMT

Report Big Charlie • December 28, 2009 10:10 AM GMT
