Few days ago there was a decent thread on here (shocking, i know) on digital cameras/photography but canrt find that so was wondering if someone could recommend a decent camera for around 200-300 would pay more if the extra features make it worthwhile.

I have been recommended the Nikon p90 or olympus sp-590uz anyone able to recommend** these off? would a dslr be better?
cheers

Having read it, seems wasnt quite as i remembered since the guys have SLRs so anyone know the quality difference between a fair slr/decent digital/dslr?

Here's a compariosn of the two you mentioned side by side.

I don't know much about this type of camera really.

I'd stay away from the P90. Not the best Nikon can do.

With that budget you can't really afford a new dslr, but the camera you are talking about are known as bridge cameras as they 'bridge' the gap between compacts and DSLR's.

I would'nt gor for anything at your budget. If I was you, I would honestly wait, get another £100 quid and get a Panasonic G1. They are superb cameras and DSLR quality.

Comparison review between the two.

What will you be using the camera for?

Have you considered getting an entry level DSLR?

cheers for those 2, so what does the G1 start at? looking quickly it seems #700-800
I dont mind spending a little more if there is a big difference in quality.
It would be mainly land/seascapes, I also want to experiment a bit capturing waves etc, do the digitals let you do long exposure?
Report treble • December 12, 2009 1:23 PM GMT
No, the G1 starts about £400.

It also has a very wide angle lens of 14mm that is good for landscapes, although you dont actually get 14mm until you use a full frame DSLR which are very expensive. You get more like 28mm.

You can of course change your exposure times so you can either capture pinpoint sharp waves or slow it down to make them take on a smoky, misty look. Very atmospheric.

cheers.. I've got so much scenery/beaches etc around here thought i would giv it a shot see what end up with... for 400 i will probably look up the g1 then, dont supposse you have a link for that sort of price? cheers.

It's £462 here, but very reputable company. When you said 700-800, you was probably looking at the GF1 which is the next one up.

There's a full review here when you have a few hours to sit down and read it (33 pages!).

Personally, i'd get an entry level dSLR for that price. It just gives you more options.

Five by Five,

I hope you have'nt soent any money yet, if so dont worry, no quibble returns.

However, I do tend to agree with Shrew D. I initally got the impression you were a casual snapper, but if you want to get serious, then a DSLR is the only really sensible option.

Even the most basic of DSLR's have excellent image quality as it is more governed by the lens than the camera.

I would take a look at either the Canon EOS450D or the Nikon D5000. They both come with decent lenses and have similar specs. I think the D5000 can do video though. However, you really need to feel them first before making a decision.

As treble mentioned, the Nikon D5000 looks a good buy. Just reading the review on it now.

As in that link, the Sony A700 body only is being sold very cheap at some PC Worlds and Currys. £280 body only is very good.
