Ive purchased a dell pc for my daughter as a xmas pressie but unfortunately in trying to set up the machine yesterdy it progresses no further than what would appear to be sleep mode.
Lo & behold try again this morning & hey presto managed to get it to respond & set up.
However having closed the machine down ive tried on a number of occasions to start the balsted thing but no joy other than the sleep mode
An amber light remaining constant on the "on" button tried to contact dell but still awaiting a reply 24 hours later.
Ant techies got any ideas other than return machine back which is looking 1.01 @ present

Don't worry. Your daughter will probably know how to sort it out as the younger generation appear to be much more knowledgeable on things like that.

Yes - she'll plug it in.

New laptop batteries must be fully charged before first use.

Then fully discharge and re-charge 3 times to 'condition' the battery for a longer life.

you need to remove it form box and leave it for at least 4 hours at room temperature ,these item a bin stored in cold warehouses for weeks, and moisture gets into them , i found out with my Dell was the same ,it usually says in the small print
Report lynn60 • December 22, 2009 12:19 PM GMT
thought that was the problem yesterday so when it actually started this morning thought it was probably condensation/change intemperature Been out the box 24 hours now.

before sending it back id open it up and make sure everything is plugged in right.like give the graphics card a push to make sure its got a proper connection to the motherboard and so on
Report shergarburger • December 22, 2009 1:12 PM GMT
do NOT open it up...your warranty will not be valid
Report Six of Clubs • December 22, 2009 1:35 PM GMT
some pc's do have diagnostic lights on the front near the on/off button, should be more info in your manual.
they can tell you if for instance its a bad memory module

oh and another thing, as a dell owner myself, if you can avoid calling the indian help desk then do so at all costs.

obv a return under warranty will require contacting them, in which case they will try and sell you an upgraded care package with options like collect and return, just tell them to feck off. they will prob spend ages with you telling you to try things with the pc, good luck with that as they are useless imo.
