Yes, always. Unless they're getting inside info...

Apart from arguably in a "feel" game like poker. Even then, the maths is so important.

is a gambler, the same as a punter?
Report annie. • December 20, 2009 7:51 PM GMT
Yes, I think my maths background, A levels , uni, has helped me, particularly with horseracing and especially poker, probability theory etc.
Report a bitofinterest • December 20, 2009 7:53 PM GMT
my 1st class degree from oxbridge has played no part in me making the game pay

Take a look at the banking industry for the answer.

i.e. NO

but the great advantage is the old boys network from Eaton/Oxbridge will come to your rescue and pay your debts off for loses for you when your bust.

it is not essential but nonetheless the educated punter, (particularly Maths), will usually do better. I'd say the majority of succesful gamblers fall into a few categories, namely:

Industry or ex industry, which in itself is an education albeit more honed.
Educated in partuclar maths or maths/technical based disciplines
Passed on from elders.

Most outside these tend to be the donators in my experience.
Report geofftheman • December 20, 2009 10:48 PM GMT
My second class honours degree has played no part in my losing money on betfair.
Report Jim Hensen • December 21, 2009 12:02 AM GMT
Is it sociology?
Report History Maker • December 21, 2009 12:30 AM GMT
I've found it matters. I got an A at Maths A-level, having been encouraged to take double maths. I am absolutely certain it gives me an edge against poker players with a similar amount of experience without a strong understanding of probability.

Having said that, I don't play online, and would never play at a table that I didn't know at least one other person. Maybe that's down to an 'instinctive' feel for how likely it is that'll I'll get burned (by fair means or foul) without the admittedly slight safety net of knowledge of the enemy.
Report HRH The Lager Khan • December 21, 2009 12:45 AM GMT
In my experience when I was managing a bookies, a lot of ex uni types suffered from a false sense of superiority due to their extended education. Often system based punters with a background involving maths, they were some of the worst chasers as they struggled to accept when things were going wrong. My closest friend is a full time punter though who spent 2 years doing a sports studies course, and the insight he gained in to the phycology of sportsmen has helped him for sure.
Report History Maker • December 21, 2009 2:02 AM GMT
I think you're probably right when it comes to sports betting HRH. When it comes to poker when you dont' have long to assess the situation though, that's a different matter.

I play poker against up to 8 people though, and have never played without knowing at least 2 of the crowd. I think my instinctive mathematical edge gives me a small advantage. It helps that I'm apparently difficult to read. I'm hopeless at reading others though.
Report Dr Crippen • December 21, 2009 6:51 AM GMT
Gamblers with the benefit of an education definitely have an edge, they can use their education to devise ways of making their money go further before its all gone.
Report V4 Vendetta • December 21, 2009 7:28 AM GMT
There's probably a small correlation, but it's close to zero in my experience.
Report evski • December 21, 2009 7:37 AM GMT
agree with goring, a grounding in simple probability is probably necessary but it can't ensure sucess.

fwiw ive been betting for a living nearly 20 years, though the vast majority of it isnt trading on here (or anywhere else). i have qualifications in accountancy and IT but went through loads of different jobs- walking out on all of them after arguments with other members of staff. i very rarely use capital letters or the correct punctuation mainly cos im a lazy fooker. my inside leg measurement is 32 and i can fart the american national anthem. how that helps decide this argument i havent a scooby clue. merry christmas.
Report Coachbuster • December 21, 2009 4:51 PM GMT
you have to be pretty useful at arithmetic to survive in this game.

i don't regard myself as educated at all, but i was the fastest at working with numbers in the whole schoool (including the maths teachers)

I left school at 15, make a decent 2nd living from punting. I am highly intelligent and i KNOW that this is a massive advantage in all aspects of life.
You need, intellect, an edge, years of experience and importantly balls.
I read Pullein, he makes a lot of sense but i bet he has never staked 10k in a day.
