EGG... i was in the Cotswolds last week and there were piles of rock salt every few yards along the side of the road on the steepest hills... i guess the council had prior warning. Most of the grit bins are empty these days though as the last 15 years or so they haven't really been needed much due to the rubbish winters we've had.
Just walked back from the pub and it's beautiful. Bit slippy underfoot but very seasonal :)

aziraphale 20 Dec 16:59 beautiful isn't it? I love weather like this. Nothing more depressing than 14C and wet and windy in the run-up to Xmas.
Absolutely right, my friend. Though I might disagree with you when I leave for work at 4.45am tomorrow and I'm scraping ice off my scrotum :(

did a 25mins walk to Asda, snow everywhere and freezing, it was beautiful
but it was so calm, if it was windy, it woulda been a totally different matter

that is the only drawback ,i'm surprised more footie hasn't been cancelled this weekend across Europe .

Grit bins are full of litter only near me (the ones that haven't been melted by the local hoodies trying to set them on fire).
Got to admit I enjoy this weather much more than the depressing wet and mild.
The bit i find annoying though is the over reaction by the media calling it "bitter cold" then showing a weather map with nightime minimums of -1 or -2 only.
A "big freeze" yet the daytime maximums are still well above 0°C. Just makes us look soft and stupid to visitors from places where it actually gets properly cold.

^^ Agree with that. When I came home from work on Friday the temeperature was 2 deg, above freezing, yet Met Office banging on about extereme cold, icy conditions e.t.c. The problem is the roads are not made for the huge amount of traffic nowadays. The slightest degradation in driving conditions causes chaos.

Fair point but -1°C to -2°C is not particularly uncommon. Before they start talking about "bitter cold" it should be below -5°C at least, preferably -10°C.
It is the use of ever increasing hyperbole to describe conditions that are just below average that irks.
It appears the latest generation have to have everything sensationalised before they are willing to listen to it.

chatname -wasn't it something to do with the windchill ?
I was on the Essex coast Friday night ,and at 3am all i can say it was possibly the coldest i have experienced in this country ...it felt much colder than the -2 that the Met Office gave out for East Anglia .

When we have a dump of snow that stays around for 4 days or more it is unusual
Only in recent times. Even in February last year there was a spell of about 5-6 days with lying snow where i live.
Fair enough about the wind chill but it is the way British people react as if we have the worst weather in the world that irks me.
Sometimes we need to look at the wider perspective before we start banging on about how terrible our "bitter cold spell" with -1°C and -2°C minimums + a bit of a breeze is.
It was -33°C in Germany last night FFS.

buy snow-chains, it'll make your driving a lot easier, just do it, like most other countries, even Greece
