Can't be worse than Haiti, though. Forest all chopped down for firewood and every passing tropical storm washing away your house. Not good.

Honduras has to be up there. Military with m16's on every corner during the day. At night it becomes a free for all. Didn't stay very long in that country. poor buggers

One of the best places to die in as well.

Colombian murder rate over 3 times that of Mexico.
Report The Magic Flea • December 19, 2009 10:12 AM GMT
that is all in the inner cities, and where the farc and drug lords operate. the coastal regions are beautiful and quite safe.
Report JamesBlakesHugeArse • December 19, 2009 10:15 AM GMT
baracouda - you really have no clue, accept what other people who know tell you. fair enough, you associate Colombia with drugs and murder because you have read the news, but if you havent been there then you really dont know what the country is like.

I know what I am talking about, others will back me up, Colombia is generally a great place to live.

Illuminate me, because on here that's what it says.

Like many countries, I'm sure there are great places in Colombia. However, if you want a list of the worst places to live then it is, on average, one of the worst, unless the prospect of death appeals to you.

UK is 2 per 100,000, Mexico 10, Colombia 36.

FACT.
Report The Magic Flea • December 19, 2009 11:29 AM GMT
does that include gang related deaths? and military offensives? If so than the stats are worthless. There are certain no go areas in colombia
Report The Magic Flea • December 19, 2009 11:32 AM GMT
Around 18,000 visits are made by British passport holders to Colombia every year (Source: Colombian State Security Department - DAS). Most visits are trouble-free. 11 British nationals required consular assistance in Colombia in the period 01 April 2008 31 March 2009 for the following types of incident; deaths (1 case); hospitalisations (7 cases). During this period assistance was also requested with regard to lost or stolen passports (56 cases). Bogotá and Cartagena are increasingly popular tourist destinations. The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Colombia in 2007 was the theft of personal belongings, including passports. Street crime is a particular problem in major cities. You should avoid unnecessary travel to deprived areas of all Colombian cities.
Report The Magic Flea • December 19, 2009 11:33 AM GMT
We advise against all but essential travel to all rural areas bordering Panama, Venezuela and Ecuador, to the towns of Buenaventura and San José del Guaviare and the areas surrounding them; and to the Parque Nacional Natural de La Macarena in the department of Meta.

We advise against all but essential travel in areas of intensive coca cultivation (see Crime section), including the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Though the overall security situation in Colombia has improved considerably in recent years, the threat of terrorism is still high in many parts of the country. A bomb attack in Bogotá in January 2009 killed two people and injured at least twenty others. Attacks can be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers, and in the vicinity of government buildings and military establishments. Please see the Terrorism/Security section of this advice for more details.

I've seen countries with a much lower murder rate that have a far more serious warning from the FCO

rubbish, that list is from a couple of years ago in which time gang deaths have risen hugely in mexico - anyway where does it say that the higher the homicide rate of the country the worse it is?

by your fantastic definition, together with your list, haiti and somalia area better places to live than south africa

you know nothing about colombia, assumed it was all bad because of the drugs and what you have heard on the news so mentioned it - just accepted that you are wrong.

I'll second the defence of Colombia.

It's true that there are plenty of areas that aren't safe, particularly the deprived slums, but enough about the UK...

In all seriousness, my sister's ex is Colombian and she went out there a few times and said it was wonderful, especially Cartagena. That's coming from a girl who won't go south of the river in London any further east than Putney.
Report wit-ham • December 19, 2009 12:15 PM GMT
my wifes friend married a columbian and has been out there a few times and enjoyed it,

but they had great difficulty get him a visa for spain until the then tory leader IDS helped out as he was their MP
