Though not quite of the 2008 vintage, all in all 2009 was a good year imo, the highlights being the Ashes victory, Jenson Button, England qualifying for world up, David Haye and the gorgeous Jessica Ennis.

Nominees are:

Jenson Button
Mark Cavendish
Tom Daley
Jessica Ennis
Ryan Giggs
David Haye
Phillips Idowu
Andy Murray
Andrew Strauss
Beth Tweddle

8 English winners, 1 welsh wizard and a Scottish loser.

I would love lovely Ennis to win, but suspect Button will get the nod. And I begrudge him nothing.

Is Beth Tweddle Scottish ?
Report curious-cat • December 2, 2009 1:15 PM GMT
English but born in SA.

Oh to be a "loser" on the Andy Murray scale...

i'm not being funny but apart from murray and perhaps giggs and cavendish. the other 7 all were undisputed winners in their sport

There's a programme on BBC1 tonight at 10:45, about this year's nominees.

I'd struggle to pick one

Jenson Button - he did brilliantly but there's so many factors involved, don't think he won a race in the second half of the season.
Mark Cavendish - a lot of people cycle, but do that many do so competitively? There's so many different levels, it's almost as if there's an event for everyone to win.
Tom Daley - no, just in there cos he's young.
Jessica Ennis - fit as hell, but how many woman heptathletes is she really competing against.
Ryan Giggs - in there cos he's old
David Haye - I've every respect to him for, well surviving against that giant, but for me he needs a defence against a non-freak
Phillips Idowu - good, but again how many was he really competing against.
Andy Murray - Disappointed in not winning a slam, but is in the top 3 of a sport with at least a thousand pros.
Andrew Strauss - You'd think he'd be a shoe in, but the Ashes win was a fortunate one, and the rest of the season was gash
Beth Tweddle - Not a sport with a mass of competition, but also one we don't do that well in so she's done well to come through the system.

In terms of sporting excellence, for me

Murray
Tweddle
Button

IF I were betting I'd go

Cavendish
Tweddle
Ennis

Tom Daley IS a world champion sparky!!! 15years old I think.

I, personally, would go:

1 Jenson Button
2 (The lovely) Jessica Ennis
3 David Haye
4 Andrew Strauss
5 Andy Murray
6 Philips Idowu
7 Tom Daley
8 Beth Tweddle
9 Ryan Giggs
10 Mark Cavendish

It's unbelievable how Ryan Giggs can be so short in the betting for this.
Report positively4thsteet • December 2, 2009 7:53 PM GMT
IF you were gonna put a footballer in then it should've been rooney imo.
Report jimmy69 • December 2, 2009 7:53 PM GMT
I mean the guy is going to be favourite soon...
Report positively4thsteet • December 2, 2009 7:56 PM GMT
bloody hell, i hadn't noticed that jimmy - about 11-4 now
Report jimmy69 • December 2, 2009 7:59 PM GMT
Yeah. Everybody has been backing him like there's no tomorrow.
Report cliff • December 2, 2009 8:00 PM GMT
God, those odds are barmy. First time ive looked at this amrket this year and Strauss is available at 25-1. Can't beleive Giggs is so short - sheer madness
Report jimmy69 • December 2, 2009 8:03 PM GMT
It is bizarre to say the least. I have watched this market for some time now and there's always been money up to back Giggs all the way down from 1000.

Programme about the contenders on BBC1 now.

I'm so glad that people like fat comic James Corden and pen and paper seller Theo Paphitis are explaining why certain contenders should win.

Report Far From Trouble • December 2, 2009 11:00 PM GMT
Button and Haye will be top 2 imo, the rest are scrapping it out for 3rd, probably Jess Ennis would be my choice
Report ReaseHeath • December 2, 2009 11:24 PM GMT
I like Giggsy but as it's a 2009 award, I struggle to see why they were showing a goal he scored in 1999.

In his case it seems to be Sports Personality of the Generation.

From a european point of view I would go with Mark Cavendish. I am a cycling fan and his performances were amazing.
Report redrich • December 2, 2009 11:35 PM GMT
Giggs should win this and I'm a Liverpool fan

Defo shouldn't be cavendish imo. I'm no cycling expert admittedly, but despite winning 6 sections he didn't win the overall sprint section of the race (the points race). A great achievement by him, but we shouldn't be rewarding people who come second imo.
Report jimmy69 • December 3, 2009 8:07 AM GMT
We shouldn't be rewarding anyone who doesn't have a personality. It's time the BBC changed the name of the competition....it's been long overdue.
Report Alex69 • December 3, 2009 8:31 AM GMT
Haye has to be the top three shout of the century imo. Recent heavily-publicised World Champ win against high-profile opponent. That's where the value(v) is
