While Clarksons not everyones cup of tea he's had a pretty successful career,is a milionaire, and author and as a presenter an journo and author seems to very much enjoy what he does.
Personally i love him in print he's very funny, and also doing what he does best reviewing cars. However i also think he's possibly the worlds worst interviewer and all those silly "warp speed with clarkson" type program things he does seem utter gash."Riding over a beach with "9 1/2 litres" under your a'rse" never really does it for me or whatever it is he's doing.
It's also worthy how the Guardian types despise him and always hold him up as their oficial bogeyman.
Yay, because I was on his side in thinking that Isambard Kingdom Brunei should have won the most important Briton vote, or whatever it was about five /six years back. I've never been one to think highly of politicians or the monarchy imvhaho.
So he's rude and lacks empathy, but a lot of the time his anger is very well placed.

Seemingly wouldn't know one end of an engine from the other and certainly has rotten taste in cars.
The permanent arrested development/giggly pubescent schoolboy shtick can be wearing.
The right wing stuff is all great fun, but you just know no-one would invoke the rights and privileges he gleefully denounces quicker than Clarkson were the great unwashed (or 'morons' as he described his audience iirc) to encroach on his estate.

He's 'good at what he does' i.e. is the smug, comfortable in front of the camera, semi-eloquent face of car geeks. And I'd go so far as to say that Top Gear is fairly enjoyable/entertaining, but he's still a 'nay' for me.

I'm probably one of that neither love nor loathe him. He can be a tool, and some of his material is getting old hat now, but lets face it no one does it better. There are many worse folk occupying prime tv slots. I do like his atitude to say what he thinks, though he is often foolish in his views. His books are gash though.
The other presenter with the long hair is doing some good stuff at the minute. Ambitious airfix and meccano things that are nostalgic and light hearted.
