cancer research ,they have plenty imo ,plenty of my family have died of cancer and if i go the same way so be it ,when scientists do actually come up with a life prolonging drug to help some cancer sufferers they are told they cant have any because it is to expensive.
I used to give to any and all. Then I learned about the % that goes directly to cause and the % that is used to pay fundraising and I decided to not give to those making a living from it.
Recently I have mixed views on charities that collect for diseases. Most if not all ends up going to scientific research. Fine so far, but these are actually funding R&D that private companies will benefit from when they go to market with a drug. Often the case is where the pricing on the drug is based upon the max the market will pay as opposed to what it can be sold for at a profit. This is often justified by the cost of R&D, which to some degree or another has been paid for by charitable donations. These statements are not black and white, and happen to varying degrees. It is quite complex to find out exactly the train of all this money and if it is fair or not. Nowadays I give to Childrens and Old Peoples charities. I don't even give to a charity that I am affected by its cause, for reasons above.
Oh and certainly never give to the shaker boxes, (except british legion). These cnuts get paid £20 per full can, and the average in a can is around £27 or so. Utter disgrace. The ones that try and pressurise you in pubs and stuff get a very short shrift from me, and usually leave red faced when I ask "how much are you being paid?". utter cnuts of the highest order imo.
**** End of rant ****

A friend was telling me the story of a wrestler back in the mick mcmanus days who was quite famous. He got a phone call asking if he would do this certain charity a favour by signing some photos and writing a small dedication on each, which were to be auctioned or sold for the charity.
On the day a bloke comes to his door with about a dozen huge boxes of the stuff, he felt a bit guilty so settled down to start writing. After about half hour he got up to stretch his legs and looked out of the window to see a brand new top of the range Ford (whatever was the top ford of the day)
he remarked to the charity guy what a nice car and how he wished he could afford something like that when the charity guy said " Ohh that car, its mine, the charity bought it for me to drive to people like you who do these signing things"
The wrestler said " do you mean to tell me you expect me to sit here all day doing these things and the charity can afford to give you that just to run around in?"
At that he threw the ones he signed into the bin, and kicked the charity guy out of his house.
When charity is run like a proper business with all these employers and managers on good wages its time to stop.
The charity shops are the best, employers expected to work for nothing whilst a manager on big salary comes in once a week swanning around like shes(always a female) so important.
May have told this tale before but here goes.A friend was telling me the story of a wrestler back in the mick mcmanus days who was quite famous. He got a phone call asking if he would do this certain charity a favour by signing some photos and writi
I buy some xmas cards for the injured jockeys fund, other than that I don't give money to anybody with a tin in the street, bar donating for a poppy every year.
Even charity shops don't get all their donations of clothes.
The charity shop in East Ham was about 50 yards from an ATM I used to use at 5-30 a.m. on Saturdays. No sooner are bags of clothes dropped off outside than immigrants waiting at bus stops rifle through them for the best stuff. By the time the shop manageres gets there at 9 there's only crap stuff left.
