Went into a cafe in town. They charged £1.00 for a cup of tea and £1.25 for a mug of tea. How can they justify an extra 25p for a mug?

Cheap at half the price,

but quite expensive at full.

C = Cost (pence)
D = Desire (1 'could leave it', 10 'must have it')
M = Anticipated minutes away from place of "free" tea
R - Result

M x D / C = R

If R is equal to or higher than 5 = Buy tea
If R is equal to a lower than 4.99 - Don't buy tea

Is it you that had the strange time and effort saving routine for making tea too then, regarding what order you filled the kettle, got a tea bag etc?

That could have been Mavis "Hacksaw" Handbag, Dublin. I don't deny that I have my own methods though. :D

When I went in last week I must have inadventently asked for a mug of tea as I'm pretty sure I paid £1.25. This week I was charged £1.00. I checked the menu afterwards and I was right. £1.25 for a mug and £1.00 for a cup. Where's the justification. A tea bag is a bag. How can they charge 25p for that little bit of extra water.

Anyway, I had a panini with my cup of tea. That was £3.50. They also charge £3.50 for baguettes and sandwiches. Which is fair enough. But, the cafe down the road changes £3.50 for baguettes and sandwiches but £5 for paninis. Where's the justification there!

Service stations are laughing all the way to the bank.
Report YER MAN • November 6, 2009 4:25 PM GMT
I've never heard a service station laugh!

Is it a quiet chuckle or a sort of maniacal cackle?
Report dk1986 • November 6, 2009 4:29 PM GMT
The latter. :)

maniacal cackle

Are they supposed to rhyme, or am I pronouncing one of them wrong?

dk1986, when you must have tea would you really have to be more than 50 mins from free tea before you'd buy a cuppa for £1?

Tight barstard! ;)
Report dk1986 • November 6, 2009 5:07 PM GMT
Yep! We've all got different inclinations towards tea. I'm the type who can hold on for such a thing. Tends to be hurried housewives who absolutely must have a tea, if you ask me.

I am a tight barstard though. ;)

I've never looked back since I got a Teamaster Teamatic Tea making machine.

It takes the misery out of making tea.

If I'm out for the day I have a stove, kettle, water and other necessary equipment in the boot.

This is an avenue I have considered on many occasions.

Have always decided against it on the basis that pubs are open most of the time and they serve, beer.

We could all carry around "Chit Chat (TM)" branded Tartan Thermos flasks? Be handy to identify other chit chatters as we go about our business.
Also useful if we go say metal detecting, or train spotting.

I never really buy tea in the UK but I've been desperate abroad, and they don't really get it do they. You want a mans mug bug instead get a tiny half filled cup with a girly lipton bag and you have to beg for milk .. And the EU apparently want to ban big mugs completely because of the Green lobby, I ask you! Them foreigner's lack of basic Tea etiquette is 90% of the reason I voted leave.

Motorway service stations used to justify their high prices by saying that they were required to be open 24 hrs but my local Asda is open 24hrs and they seem to keep prices down, including fuel. What justification Costa and the like use for a brew I don't know.Confused
Report SlippyBlue • September 2, 2017 2:42 PM BST
My excellent local cafe sell a mug of tea for 80p and that is more than fair enough.

Whatever happened to orioles by the way, does anyone know? He was very much part of the eclectic bunch that we are in chit chat for many years and came across as being a great bloke.

I don't mind spending a couple of quid for the privilege of sitting down with a drink for half an hour in comfortable surroundings while Mrs F does her clothes shopping. The alternative is terrifying.
It makes no real difference as I dispense most of my loose change to beggars and buskers anyway.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • September 2, 2017 3:28 PM BST
Age has resolved the issue for me. The rate at which councils close down public conveniences has made a cup of tea the last thing in the world I'd want when I'm out.
