The trainer gave him a great race amongst horses the last day and he was jumping from the back of the fences with fun. Just the kind of experience and confidence boosting race without knowing he had a race at this stage in the lead up.

Not quite as good as Best Mate’s 10 length rout after winning the King George a few months earlier.

Matey had demolished the 3 previous King George winners that season and the last couple of Gold Cup winners were dispatched that and his previous win.
