We had a good go last year with 12/1 Santini and 14/1 Lostintranslation. More importantly it led to some good conversation and with us in lockdown for months I’d thought I start up the thread.
Al Boum Photo has won two Gold Cups but to me falls into the Best Mate category in that he’s very good but not a world beater. Even if he won next year I wonder where he’d figure in people’s best chasers in the last 20 years. 6/1 not for me
Santini did is proud and ran a blinder to only just get beaten a neck. I’m sure Nico wouldn’t believe his “slowcoach” would have to take up the running 3 out as the pace was collapsing around him. Henderson’s comment since then backs this up and I doubt he’ll leave it to other trainers next season to guarantee the pace. 8/1 surprising he’s that big
Champ ran the most incredible race at this years festival. Looked booked for 3rd until a mixture of tired horses in front and power packed finish gave him an unlikely win. In his races at Newbury and RSA he’s looked in trouble until his strong finish has kicked in (aka Big Bucks) so the Gold Cup looks right up his street. If he could iron out the odd jumping error he could be something special. 14/1
Minella Indo looked impressive for 95% of the RSA. I don’t think the horse is crying out to be upped in trip and doubt they would relish taking on Champ over further than 3 miles. 16/1
Lostintranslation had a great run but seemed to get outstayed in the later stages of the Gold Cup and taking in to account the steady pace it’s unlikely that he would turn the tables on Santini or ABP. As this run came after a PU he might find improvement with a better preparation next year. Not for me though at 16/1.
Topofthegame is top class and could be a big player next season if coming back sound. Interesting to see where he’s campaigned next season. 16/1
Others of note :-
Monalee - didn’t stay well enough Delta Work - doesn’t jump or travel around Cheltenham. Samcro - would be fascinating if aimed here. Ryanair most likely.
I’ve already had a couple of bets with Paddy which I think are value at this early stage. I’m expecting the race to very different next season with a truer run race benefiting the out and out stayers. No prizes that Santini is one of the bets with Champ joining him this year.
Santini 8/1 boosted to 8.5/1 - 7 pt EW Champ 14/1 - 4 pt EW
Will also have 1pt doubles with Siskin in the Arkle @89/1 and 48/1 as bit of fun.
Again I will back throughout the year before they run building up a decent bet and win if one or both get there on the 19th March.
All comments welcome apart from those who think we are nuts backing horses 11 months out.
I have just finished going through this with a fine tooth comb. And I have pretty much totally changed my mind. I think this is going to be a right stamina test. And I think very few will get home at the pace they will go. Santini should stay, but I just can't warm to him but he is probably the likeliest to piss on my parade so I might yet have a saver, because in the circumstances 14s is probably fair. Native River clearly stays but is old and whether he has the enthusiasm for a right old battle remains to be seen. Minella Indo is probably the most interesting of the less exposed runners because he has a reasonable stamina profile. None of the others, including Champ, will stay strongly enough over this far at this pace, except...
AL BOUM PHOTO who I am starting to think is the likeliest favourite to win all week, including next year's Gold Cup winner Monkfish, who is after all still a novice.
I have had a few small antepost bets on A Plus Tard and one on Frodo, but I have come to the conclusion that this sets up perfectly for Al Boum Photo, and I really cannot see him getting beat.

Yes Gazo. If things worked as bluntly as that, this would be the same Champ who was outstayed by Sceau Royal over a far shorter trip.
Finishing efforts are a balance of speed and stamina, in simple terms. Just as we would not wxpect Sceau Royal to have gone further and further away from Champ if they had gone another mile in that race, I don't think that in a race run at the pace I think the Gold Cup will be, and a longer trip, that Champ will be able to produce a finishing effort to overhaul Minella Indo if the latter runs to his best.
Fwiw I have come to the same conclusion about A Plus Tard. He is the winner of the beat quality staying chase won this year, and ran the last 100 yards faster than anything else. I have backed him antepost for the Gold Cup, but having considered that pace profile of the race, and the horses stamina profile, I am not sure he will be strong enough in the laat 2f here.
None of this is to knock these great horses, but for many of them they will be right at the limit of their stamina. Some wonderful animals have come up just short in this over the years, and much as I adored Cool Ground, I wouldn't try for a second to claim he was classier than The Fellow.
Some years this is a real grind, and I think this might be one of them.

Just interested in you thinking Sceau Royal outstayed Champ rather outspeeding him being the proven G1 2 mile horse ? Also, do you think Minella would have won the RSA over an extra 2 furlongs last year ?

a few likely nonners for me in this so was looking for a possible value alternative and have backed minella indo at 12s nrnb bog with 365,not a lot to make up with champ on rsa running when just chinned after going at it toe to toe with allaho from a long way out , some in the camp that champ finished strongly and was a worthy winner i am in the camp he picked up the pieces after the 2 up front folded close home after going too hard . decent festival form and should still be progressing ,rachel jumps ship to a plus tard but he had a hard race the last day , . minella indo after falling early in the savilles lined up in a tactical small field irish gold cup where a mistake 2 out didnt help his cause and the winner kemboy is top class on his day with the right conditions . minella indo 12s each way will do for me .

The most important aspect for me Is the fact ABP has never put in a clear round there Last year it was a bone cracking error at one fence Year before not fluent at 13th Through sheer laziness but when he started racing ...he still came back and beat them

I don't understand why ABP gets so little respect - he's already a dual winner, and he doesn't look to be up agaianst any superstars. He's also tactically verstitle and has speed and stamina. He's not even quoted for next year by those books with a market on the 2022 GC. He's probably not a superstar himself, and he might well find one better this year, but people talk about him like he fluked his two gold cups.

yes possibly due to him only being seen twice a season ,obviously a top class animal and no suprise if he wins again . taking nothin away away from him the form of those behind him in last years gold cup dont look too hot on paper .

Santini doesn't have the class to win but its going to suit him alot more than last year with frodon and native river, and has only run 13 times in his career, i can see him running into the places again

Santini has no class and can’t win but was beat a neck in Gold Cup last year. But will run better this year with stronger pace into a place. Beaten a short head this time ?

It was a rather cartoonish way of making the point that beating a horse over one trip doesn't mean you will over a longer one.
Just as I don't think SR would 'outstay' Champ over 3 miles, I don't think the RSA positions are sure to be repeated over this longer trip.
Of course it is just my opinion. I have found pedigree analysis to be a good tool for weeding out non stayers in the Gold Cup over the years.
On pedigree alone, ignoring everything else, including form, I would have Al Boum Photo, Santini and Native River as the 3 solid stayers, and Minella Indo as a maybe.
This is only one of many factors I look at, but in combination with form and race analysis, I think Champ is an unlikely victor.
I can totally see why others might think an extra 2f in the RSA would have seen Champ win by further, but I think have gone deeper in to his reserves before the final climb he will do well to replicate that finishing effort.

I think Santini is over-priced, he's priced up on what he's done through the winter but I couldn't care less about any of those runs, he's fit and well and a Cheltenham horse and much better on good ground.
He's a proper stayer that needs a strong pace, last year they crawled, looking at the ease with which he held his place through the race tells you that but rather than just looking at the time compared to the previous year where it was much stronger I'd urge anyone to watch the races side by side and that way you get a real idea of just how much more work the horses had to do the year before from much further out and that would be his type of race and he's guaranteed to get it this year.
Last year with how the race was run was the exact reason why ABP was able to nip away from him at the crucial moment, a horse with more tactical speed at a critical point and it was a credit to Santini that he still nearly won and an illustration of just how much the track and test suits him that he got so close off a crawl, look at the K.G. and a race run in a similar way, where he travelled well off a slow pace but was still caught out late, on that track pace wise, that's just not him.
A strong pace provides its own problem for Santini though because he's lazy and the headgear is going to need to keep him interested enough to keep him in relative touch before his stamina can aid him in the 2nd half of the race, he must hold his position, I believe he will.
The other problem he has is that the Fav. can do it both ways, a horse that has speed but was actually an easier winner when it was a proper test and he'll be a tough nut to crack with stamina to burn, however, Santini is a better jumper than ABP and the increased test will put pressure on ABP at the obstacles.
I think Santini will be go off single figures and is a really strong E/W bet at 14's IMO.

Hibore 03 Apr 20 11:39 I don’t think the 2020 Gold Cup could have been run any slower if they tried. Santini needs an out and out gallop which is far from what happened here.
If you have two devices, time on your hands and bored Laugh go onto YouTube and get up the 2019 and 2020 races. I started both races as they cross the path/road 10 yards after the start line. Interested if you are amazed as I was.
Duffy, posted this back in April. It’s mad how slow they went....also shows how versatile ABP is to win both races. This year it will be 2019 pace I’d expect.

APT is into 3/1 jf with ABP probably on the string of winners of jockey and stable. Blackmore is riding extremely well. Last throw of the dice for me with ABP, Champ and Santini.
Good luck all!

It's been a fairly non-event Cheltenham so far with 4 free bets going into the last day eg Zanahiyr, ABP, Champ and Santini; Envoi Allen scuppered quite a few doubles/trebles, and multiples on the Flat Classics. C'est la vie.
Tomorrow is another day. Then bring on the Flat.

Kemboy seems a very big price , he whupped ABM on good ground.
The more I look at this race it looks like one of those years where a turn up is on the cards.
On this better ground Kemboy , Frodon and Lostintranslation look the ones to cause the shock.

A Plus Tard vying for the fav spot. Anyone else think he's short @3/1.? Got to prove he'll get the trip here yet, against a horse who's done nothing wrong in Al Boum Photo. If he does win what a week for Rachel.

At the risk of ending up with large amounts of egg on my face, I'll be laying A Plus Tard for a place. Rachel Blackmore has been a revelation this week no doubt, however, she's been given some pretty useful ammunition to play with, biggest priced winner was 5/1. Along with these winners we've had 2 falls and 2 unseats all in chases. A Plus Tard has never been out of the first 3, good chance that may change tomorrow... I'm on Frodon at a nice price (is that aftertiming?), Nicholls has been fairly anonymous this week so that's a bit of a worry, then again, so have nigh on all of the British trainers! Also done Aso at a big price, Gold Cup regularly throws up a big price place. Venetia in pretty good nick and an interesting move to come here, Aso has been quite consistent recently too, bigger chance with Royal no doubt though.

Apologies if I’m criticising God but BLACKMORE made several mistakes there, she put the horse wrong at at least two fences (possibly three) and he dragged his hind legs, she also went for a gap that wasn’t there, don’t get me wrong I think she’s excellent but that wasn’t her finest hour IMHO

First of all, well done Foyleswar, and other Minella Indo backers.
1st 3rd 4th and pulled up from 4 qualifiers for my micky mouse "will it stay?" stamina system.
No doubt someone will tell me how unlucky Champ was to be pulled up, and how Minella Indo fluked it, and it was the worst Gold Cup in years etc etc.
Or maybe the Irish form was just stronger all along, as some have us have been getting abused for pointing out all season?

Love him or loathe him Matt Chapman got it right again. Frodon went for the wrong race. It had every right to enter and run in the Gold Cup, as Chapman himself accepted, but it had no chance whatsoever of making the places, as Chapman also very much insisted some time ago. And to a fair amount of derision and criticism. The owner took exception to Matt’s opinion but Chapman was right. Frodon had no chance, not even of making a place, and was clearly a fortunate winner of the King George, Well done Matt. You’re loud, opinionated, often criticised but you are regularly right. And you are way, way ahead of that dump[ling Bell and his bot pal in that abysmal "social stable". However, one clear point is that your miles behind Kevin Blake, so you need to stop trying to be his equal! It's not going to happen.

I know this forum is about opinions and they are like arseh0les because everyone has them but the level of horse racing intellect and intelligence on this particular thread reached an unacceptable low this year.
No disrespect to any one individual on here, but it is obvious year after year that whilst given the freedom to scribe the backwaters of our very limited braincells on the matter of this gold cup , the pollutants ignore three basic things . One racehorses are not machines, two you never know with thoroughbreds and three respect those jockeys, trainers and handlers that deal with them everyday.
Using ratings is just poppycock . Following certain scribes is a lucky dip.
Wheres the research ? Wheres the information being put up coming from ? Wheres the in depth analysis ?
Its not there , its pure guessing , often the first thing that crosses the mind or the dream from an unfounded assertion.
Other forums are full of aftertiming essay writers, and this place would be as well if it weren't for those who see the holes and attack the bolloxmeisters.

tbf to champ that mistake at the 1st knocked his confidence and the pace going to the 1st few fences is usually quick in gold cups ensured he was on the back foot early.

I posted a few weeks ago that I could not see Santini ever winning another race (perhaps he might manage a members point to point) and I stand by that. How any sane person could back it ever again is beyond me. It virtually refused to race as did Champ unfortunately and I did fancy him a bit. I don't think the pace was the main issue. Champ looked at the first fence like it was on fire. Perhaps he remembered last year.

I don't think the pace was the issue for Santini. He made a clattering jumping mistake (the jockey was lucky to sit), and you don't recover from that in a Gold Cup. Nevertheless, he does seem to be a goldilocks horse - needs to go left-handed, galloping track, ground not too good but not heavy - which leaves him with very few opportunities to win races. The sort of horse for who the Cotswold Chase is his Gold Cup.

Will either APT or Minella Indo run at Punchestown post Cheltenham? I hope so as I'll be opposing them with Kemboy (good ground) and ABP; Champ is on the sick list with a back issue possibly infected by Altior.
