Empiracle was described by Scott as being better than Grade 1 winner Melodic Rendezvous but that looks like so much hot air (or at least overreaction after an impressive win) since Empiracle was allowed to start at 7/1 in a bumper worth less than £1,400. Usain Bolt would not be 7/1 if he turned up at my daughter's school sports day.

Report cmacedin February 20, 2013 8:19 PM GMT
Just watched Regal Encores 2 runs for the umteenth time. This has to be a serious contender for the Champion Bumper.
Report Ramruma February 20, 2013 8:41 PM GMT
Regal Encore, like most in the field, has won poor races impressively.

The irony is that Red Sherlock beat Captain Cutter who'd won the Listed bumper at Ascot, so would have lined up with arguably the best form in the race.

JP bought Regal Encore after his debut win but so what? JP buys some right old rubbish. McCoy was driving last time and if AP is on top at Cheltenham, he'll be on my shortlist but only because I rate AP as a judge: the form tells us nothing.
Report cmacedin February 21, 2013 8:29 AM GMT
Hello Ramruma,
Can't disagree with your comments, however it was the way Regal ran in both races, right out the back as if they knew they had the best horse in the race and the way it so quickly made up ground when asked. The girl who rode first race was obviously riding to instructions, keep well back avoiding the kick back, you are on best horse in the race.2 great rides, you can only beat whats put up against you.I still think that this is a serious contender. We can review this after festival.Cheers and best of luck.

I've made a promise to myself not to get involved in this race at all this year - certainly my worst race historically as I always wade in to something on some trivial pretext.

I was also wondering how long that resolve will last ... CryCryCry
Report booster February 21, 2013 11:59 AM GMT
Not a race I ever take a lot of notice of other than to watch for next year's novice hurdlers and don't know how the form stacks up, but Empiracle was very impressive at Wincanton in the Autumn and he'd take some beating from what I saw.
Report michael_o February 22, 2013 9:20 AM GMT
It was Huntingdon actually. On good ground (PLEASE) can't see anything better in the race.
Report Swagger February 22, 2013 9:46 AM GMT
It's often difficult to go by form for the bumper as it's so mixed, i normally go by the horse that looks a potential machine and i think that horse could be Clondaw Court. Anyone know if there are any plans for the horse to run again before the festival as hasn't been seen for a long time?
Report unclepuncle February 22, 2013 10:00 AM GMT
Advised and backed Golantilla at 20/1 straight after his debut (all posted on here so not aftertimingSilly) and his breeding suggests better ground will suit so very hopeful, though obviously it's a minefield.
Report Ramruma February 22, 2013 2:25 PM GMT
Clondaw Court has been mainly talked up by his jockey, Paddy Mullins. There does not seem to have been much money for him though.

I get the impression no-one is very confident this year, with the Irish thinking the English can win and the English thinking it will be going back home on the ferry.

This is odd in a way, since we have seen some visually impressive performances but often in tuppenny-ha'penny races and invariably on desperate ground.

.........moyle park needs little improvement to win a substandard bumper, and he will be much better on decent ground according to harry who i have found to be a reliable judge.
willie knows how to fine tune for cheltenham and that could be the vital ingredient.
the horse took the journey and proceedings at cheltenham in his stride (Golantilla did not in december), so unlike most of the other irish entries, we know he has the temperment to handle a trip away from home, an aspect overlooked when form students are analysing irish festival entries.

"Clondaw Court may not run if the ground drys up"

"David Jennings has gone for Le Vent D'Anton in the bumper"
Report Catch Me ifyoucan February 28, 2013 9:43 PM GMT
Liz Doyle has decided against taking Le Vent D'Antan to Leopardstown for a gallop after racing on Sunday.

"He seems very well," said Doyle.
"I'm not going to take him to Leopardstown now. I just thought the ground could get a bit quick for him so we took him for a spin on a grass gallop on Tuesday instead."

"He's bouncing, he has been perfect, but we could just do with a bit of rain before Cheltenham, which it looks like they'll get. There's just a question mark over him on good ground and I'd rather run with everything in his favour."

"Mikey Fogarty rode him in the gallop, like he always does. It was over one-mile-six with two others. He looks very healthy. In the last six months we've not had a problem, he's not taken a lame step and he's very straightforward."

"He's done a bit of travelling, he came over from France and that didn't bother him.
I know he's only four and Cue Card is the only four-year-old to win it but plenty have run well in it.
He ticks all the boxes and now we're just hoping the ground isn't too fast."

Bumper horses are changing hands for £300-£500,000 a pop, so there is every incentive for connections to hype up their hosses.

Equally good point and on seeing who the owner is I can see the argument.
Report Ramruma March 4, 2013 12:20 PM GMT
That said, given the number of runners in the Champion Bumper who go on to win Graded races, perhaps a degree of confidence is to be expected.
Report Ramruma March 4, 2013 12:24 PM GMT
I make it 84 subesequent Graded race winners since Florida Pearl won in 1996. Maybe Nick Mordin was right and instead of betting in the bumper, we should study the race for future champions.
