Personally, can't understand why Grumeti would turn the tables on Pearl Swan on 3LB worse terms. Nicholls was pretty adamant that there was more to come as well.

You could be right Shockster.

I just thought Grumetti was quite keen early on he and also jumped one of the paths that crossed the track during the race. Ruby, as always, had his horse settled out the back and ran on strongly. How many times have we seen him deliver a ride like that before ? He seems to be a dab hand at doing that at Cheltenham.

I've missed the 12/1 anyway so will just rather take 4 or 5 on the day than risk the 10's in an ante-post market.

I think he'll be nearer 10's on the day. Minsk and others to come out yet. Will be highly competitive.

Yep always is. 6/1 the field last year.

I always think of what if when i decide to leave one till the day, what if they come out in the adonis or other novice hurdle, that nov hdl has plenty of substance, and the selection has come on leaps and bounds, improved stones and hacks up and then becomes a short priced jolly, all 10/1 gone into history and now you wouldnt touch it with a barge pole cos its only 3sConfused

Happened to me loads of times down the years and missed winners cos of it so now would much rather just take that little extra risk and build a book on each race i want to get involved in based on form and market vibes on here.

I'm a Grumeti fan/backer and having the Triumph a furlong shorter than Saturday's race gives me every hope he can beat Pearl Swan next time...nevertheless see that one as the main danger still although fancy it could get outpaced/too far behind a la Sam Winner last year

Sint - especially given 4yos have such an awful record in the Supreme. I can't see Dildar or Pearl Swan anywhere apart from the Triumph or Hinterland away from the Fred Winter. Gordon Elliot also has 3 4yos entered.
By:
Rod Tidwell
When: 02 Feb 12 14:19
do 4yos have that bad a record in it? Many that have run havent really been up to the grade anyway but when a decent one runs they have performed well (Binocular, Hors la Loi immediately spring to mind)
By:

When: 02 Feb 12 14:27
Interesting that HL3 and Binoc are both French breds, they definitely mature earlier and are better placed to take advantage of the weight concession.
By:
strontium
When: 02 Feb 12 15:01
What that suggests is that if you've got an outstanding young horse it can win the Supreme. But using two Champion Hurdlers as examples is not necessarily a good predictor for a given horse who may run. And even Binocular didn't win the race. HL3 and King Pele are the only yos to win in 40 years.

With HL3 he was with Martin Pipe when he won the Supreme but later switched to PFN.

It's just something to bare in mind anyway. PFN did a late switch with Al Ferof from the Neptune to the Supreme last year so who knows .. Pearl Swan could go for Supreme if he thinks Dildo is No.1 ..

Just done my first bet,a rather tentative wager on Urbain de Sivola,20's a reasonable price i feel, and not easy to work out i know but his form looks as good as any ive seen so far.

I think the Supreme entry can often be made for horses that like a bit of dig in the ground as it's often perceived that Tuesday offers a much better prospect for softer ground than the Friday.

Yep fair point.

I recall PFN saying exactly that last season re Sam Winner, but he ended up running in the Triumph anyway.

Knew it with this horse!....Mullins will always protect good horses if they are not 100%....Hurrican Fly a casing point....he did the same with Samain last year...his best bumper horse and did not take him to Cheltenham, saved him for the irish festivals.  I can see the same happening with Minsk.

All this talk of minsk...

have to say I read somewhere that dessie hughes didn't think he was going to get the horse ready for the festival??

Maybe wrong but I have based my book around him being a non runner???

might have got it wrong but that is what I read somewhere wish I could remember where...anyways I wouldn't be backing it...think he said maybe punchestowns...

will do some investigation...

Im not a backer of Minsk but wouldnt worry yet if i had.
Sounds like he goes to Fairyhouse on the 25th which is virtually the same date the last 2 Triumph winners made their hurdling debut.
By:

My theory on the Paul Nicholls Triumph contenders is this: the order in which they have come out is inversely proportional to the esteem he holds them in. Thus,  Pearl Swan came out after Ranjaan, and this was succeeded by Dildar, who he thinks is the best of the three. But, if this is true (and I have absolutely no evidence to suggest that it is) it means that Dodging Bullets is some animal. Looks the type for the triumph, and makes its debut at Taunton on Thursday. Also has an entry at Newbury on Saturday, presumably as a fallback if Taunton is off. I tweeted PN this afternoon to ask if Dodging Bullets had the potential to win the Triumph, and he replied "hope so". I hope so too, as my book is built around it (and Dildar).

mary - what makes you think it will stay? I can't see much evidence in its flat form or, for what it's worth, it's pedigree.
By:

I've absolutely no evidence whatsoever other than the Triumph entry to suppose it will get 2m 1f.

Fair enough. That's very candid for a backer on here!
