Adopting the official name for the festival, several tough questions will be set over the months and weeks to see who really DOES know their stuff. This might also prove a shameless opportunity to plug my book!

Q1. Who is the only regular racecourse commentator to have ridden at the Festival?

Andy Orkney did ride at the Festival, although it can't be the answer as wizardofoz says it is a present day commentator.

I am trying to be very precise when setting these questions. Otherwise, I'll be in front of the headmaster.

Apologies to Al Bundy, who takes a very early lead. Andy Orkney rode Boro Smackeroo into 5th in the 1993 Champion Chase.

I had another in mind so:

2. Which other erstwhile racecourse commentator had a ride at the Festival?

lol - that's a different question!

This is going to run until the first day of the NH Meeting.

Since the question doesn't specifically say that the person in question commentates in the UK, perhaps we're looking for one that works abroad.

In which case, could it be Mark Richards, now working in Hong Kong?

Clue necessary, perhaps.

He's an ex-commentator who lives in this country, but, if Mark Richards is a commentator in Hong Kong, I've no shame in admitting that escaped my notice and will place The Anorak joint first. According to my Googling efforts, he's just a presenter.

Jimmy Lindley came third on Retour de Flamme in the 1958 Champion Hurdle. He was the BBC's regular paddock commentator for several years. Clutching at straws here I know!

to clarify then, are we talking about an actual race caller then and not presenters ..paddock watchers ...general pundits etc etc?

Sorry,I've had no internet acces for several days.

The question makes it crystal clear that it is a racecourse commentator who had a ride at the NH Meeting, other than andy Orkney.

Noone has got him yet.

Keep going. Now I have access I'll let you know when it's right. He stopped racecourse commentating about 15 years ago.

No hurry as there's over 5 months to the end of the quiz and I don't want to have to devise 200 questions!

Q1. Who is the only regular racecourse commentator to have ridden at the Festival?
2. Which other erstwhile racecourse commentator had a ride at the Festival?

Did they only commentate once or is it already headmaster time after 2 questions?

Saxon Farm takes the joint lead.

Jerry Branfoot rode Lady Beware in the 1969 National Hunt Chase.

Leader board:

1. AL BUNDY
1. saxon farm

Q3. Which owner had a favourite on the deck two years running in the same race and in what years? (all 3 elements needed for the point).
