Josh Taylor and Ryan Burnett make their WBSS debuts tonight at Super Lightweight and Bantamweight respectively. I expect unbeaten Burnett to come out on top against tough and highly experienced Fiipino, Nonito Donaire, who is surely near the end of his career at 35, although always a tough opponent. The more interesting fight is Taylor v Ryan Martin at Super Lightweight. Unbeaten Taylor is strong favourite to win in front of his home crowd, however Martin cannot be overlooked. Ryan Martin is a well-schooled, accurate pucher with a great jab and good variety of shots. I'm yet to be totally convinced that Taylor is as good as his fans think he is. He won very well against a dangerous, but limited Ohara Davies last year. But he was not all that convincing last time out against Viktor Postol, who gave him all sorts of problems and didn't deserve to be on the end of such a wide decision, despite being dropped by Taylor in the 10th. There were clear signs that Taylor was extremely uncomfortable against an opponent who was taller than him. Ryan martin is also slightly taller than Taylor and has the ability to make things very hard for the Scot, particularly early on. Not withstanding the fact that Taylor is very likely to get the benefit of any doubt in his home country, I think the odds for Taylor are way too short at 1.14. It may well be that Taylor, will have too much power for Martin (who is moving up from lightweight), but Martin has the tools to get the better of the early exchanges and get himself ahead on points (at least on subjective opinion) after 4 or 5 rounds. If Martin has a weakness, it is his defence. He is not particularly hard to hit and his footwork is not great. For this reason I think that Taylor might wear Martin down, either stopping him late, or getting a decision based on aggression and landing the heavier shots as the fight goes on. Rather like he did against Postol. At 1.14 though, Taylor is a lay to back, imo. I think he will trade a lot higher when the market wakes up to how good Martin is.

back of the head punch
Report Des Pond November 3, 2018 10:35 PM GMT
You can't count someone out straight after they get hit. You have to give them a chance to get onto their feet. Terrible ref.
Report bobweenit November 3, 2018 10:36 PM GMT
yup and taylor was hitting him while he was on the floor
Report Des Pond November 3, 2018 10:40 PM GMT
Mind you, you can't expect any better from Loughlin, Disgrace of a ref. Taylor was winning anyway, but Loughlin couldn't stop it quick enough.
