The Final of the WBSS Super Middleweight Tournament.  It's gone under the radar a bit, maybe partly due to the money-influenced decision to hold it in Saudi Arabia. And also because Smith is not a big name. It should be an interesting contest though, with the, so far, unbeaten Smith, much the taller man at 6 ft 3, against the heavier and much more experienced Groves.  On paper it looks like Groves is the more accomplished boxer with a more impressive resume, having fought well against real world class fighters (although he lost 3 of those). Whereas, Smith has never fought anyone as good as those fighters that beat Groves (at time when he was relatively inexperienced) nor indeed, as good as Groves himself. The biggest cause for concern for Groves is, of course, his dislocated shoulder. An injury sustained during his comprehensive win against the game, but outmatched Chris Eubank Jnr.  Groves' camp insist that the shoulder is fully functional following surgery, and will not cause him any problems. If that is the case, I think Groves shoud be able to outbox the taller man. and win a tough contest on points. However, a shoulder injury is a serious concern for any sportsman, especially a boxer, and can't be dismissed lightly.  Normally I would back Groves to beat a relatively limited fighter like Smith, without too many problems. However, the shoulder injury, along with Smith's size raise a few doubts. Groves's best attribute is possibly his excellent jab, along with his smart counter punching, but the height and reach advantage enjoyed by Smith may mitigate that factor to some extent. There have also been concerns expressed about Smith's hands, and whether he has some pain or injury, but you hear that kind of thing all the time, so who knows?  Groves to win for me, probably on points.

Good performance from Smith. Groves didn't seem to offer a lot. I actually had it even in rounds going into that round but Smith was winning his rounds much clearer and clearly causing Groves more issues having rocked him a couple of times already.

Thing is he's just earned a fortune so basically has to be ppv for Eddie to pay him that sort of dough, but how he's gonna sell it I have no idea as he still has like zero profile.

Report n88uk September 28, 2018 9:54 PM BST
Why, his route to winning was always KO imo (albeit he was also mostly outboxing Groves there which I didn't see outcoming), not like we've not seen Groves' suspect chin in the past.

Skoglund is underrated, and he boxed to orders against the kickboxer

Report n88uk September 28, 2018 9:57 PM BST
I wasn't saying it was always gonna be a KO given I thought Groves would win, I am saying that I thought if Smith won it would be KO, Groves has a suspect engine and chin, which = at risk of KO.
Report n88uk September 28, 2018 9:57 PM BST

Report n88uk September 28, 2018 9:58 PM BST
Yer I have sensed that for ages. It's been noticeable for ages, given he doesn't even talk about Smith anymore and even talked up like Groves ages ago without mentioning Smith that we talked about at the time.

What PPV fight can Eddie even make for Smith exactly? DeGale?
Report wisewords September 28, 2018 10:02 PM BST
In the build up to this fight tonight, all I could think about how how Mundo chinned Rocky Fielding all those years ago it what was meant to be a 50/50 fight, how he tends to rise to the big occasion but looks crap in the smaller occasion fighting a nobody. And the fact George's chin isn't great, how Froch sparked him in Wembley

A combination of the size difference, poor acclimatisation from Groves, him having a cold and the worry about the shoulder. It was all too much for Groves to overcome. And he is an Old 30 tbh. Smith's preparation was better and it helped him a lot.

lol I actually didn't even know this was on tonight !

I vaguely remembered it was on late September ( certainly wasn't reminded by any marketing; never saw a mention of it anywhere ) but assumed it was on a Saturday as Friday hasn't been a big fight night since the 80s at least.

Sounds like Groves is done. Been in a lot of wars and his post fight comments indicate he wasn't surprised by the outcome. Perhaps just still injured and went through with it for the payday.

So will Calum's first defence be at Anfield ?

Or will Sauerland be organizing it for a Thursday afternoon in Borneo.....
Report wisewords September 28, 2018 11:34 PM BST
Sauerland isn't Callum's promoter. Eddie Hearn and Matchroom are. And Anfield won't be available until next summer
Report n88uk September 29, 2018 12:20 AM BST
Eddie will likely try and organise a homecoming at the Echo or maybe MEN (really depends on opponent tbh) for Feb time. Very hard at this point to know whose on the table. DeGale was talking up he will have a big fight before the end of the year, but no way Smith is back out before the end of the year. DeGale probs is the right sorta fight for him though, easy PPV, and it's one he should win easily as DeGale is gone imo thus will boost his profile which badly needs boosting in the UK.
Report TheBaron September 29, 2018 10:46 AM BST
I was impressed by Smiths discipline obviously had a plan and stuck to it.  Groves is looking shot should retire.  Will be interesting to see Smith's tactics against his next opponent.
