..and so Calum Smith has to go to America to fight Anthony Dirrell

How can Eddie not win these bids? I can't believe the Americans are that excited about Anthony Dirrell fighting what to them is some random guy , so surely they can't have bid fortunes

Calum fighting for a world title at Anfield would surely be immense in tickets and Sky PPV

Seems Eddie invests everything in AJ and not much left for these other fighters

Eddie didn't want to make a big loss on the fight so lost the purse bid. He clearly doesn't believe in Callum's ability to sell a big fight. Like his brother Liam, he's too "normal" to hype and sell a PPV to generate big numbers.
Report GRANTCKING March 8, 2017 2:39 PM GMT
mundo smith wouldnt of been PPV, thats prob why eddie bid peanuts
Report wisewords March 8, 2017 5:00 PM GMT
yeah because Eddie knows Mundo Smith has no "larger than life" personality to hype his fights
Report tobermory March 9, 2017 1:42 AM GMT

yup, and George was good at running his mouth. he was also undefeated before he fought Froch

Haymon overpays is why isn't it. Haymon will lose a load of money on this, something Hearn isn't willing to do as he's businessman.

Haymon asks his fighters if they're willing to travel, if the answer is no, he gets them home advantage by overpaying. He knows roughly what the other side is going to offer because they'd been negotiating for like a month anyway, so you will have a rough idea what the other side will bid. Hearn probably would have lost Brook vs Spence purse bid too if Spence hadn't been willing to travel so accepted the deal Hearn apparently offering. Would have been a very tough purse bid for Haymon to win too as Brook was entitled to 75%, so if Hearn is offering Spence say $2m to come to the UK which is probably a reasonable guess, Haymon would have had to bid in excess of $8m to win the purse bid, even Haymon probably couldn't justify that.

Only thing that surprises me is Haymon is still willing to overpay for stuff like this. His money has been dwindling in recent times and he's not been overpaying as much, so this surprised me. As really this is just pure burning money from a business point of view. Though supposedly Dirrell is taking a massive pay cut anyway. If that's happening makes it much easier to win purse bids, whereas Smith wasn't willing to take any less money.
Report n88uk March 9, 2017 4:24 PM GMT
Haymon bid $1.6m btw for this. Hearn $1.2m.

Crap $ to £ rate is hurting Hearn in these purse bids too. Hearn is having to bid like 25% more than he would a year ago for the same amount in $.
Report n88uk March 9, 2017 4:30 PM GMT
But say Dirrell is only taking $300k, Haymon has only bid in effect $1.1m.

Similar principle why Hearn would have had a big edge in a Brook vs Spence purse bid, he would have offered Brook like $2m, then been able to bid like $8m in a purse bid to secure him home advantage. Haymon would have to pay Brook like $6m+ to travel to the US, hard for even Haymon to justify that I imagine.
Report wisewords March 9, 2017 6:38 PM GMT
Hearn couldn't up his bid because Callum & Joe G wouldn't take less basically.

'The boxers will split 90 percent of the winning bid, meaning each will earn $721,350. The remaining 10 percent -- $160,300 -- will go to the winner as a bonus.'

Eddie wants to set up base in the USA also

He loves the Glam lifestyle ove there
Report n88uk March 15, 2017 1:22 AM GMT
That is the purse split Tobes. But Dirrell has agreed to take less money.

Eg. Say Brook vs Spence went to purse bids, Hearn could have bid like $8m having already done a deal to give Brook like $2.5m beforehand (meaning his true liability is like $4.5m).

Since when have these fights been 60:40 to the winner though. That always gets bandied around for hype, but I've never seen that actually the contract like it is here.
Report n88uk March 15, 2017 1:27 AM GMT
Anyway this will be interesting. I've never really rated Callum Smith as much as he's hyped to be, and this is a huge step up. He has been fighting nobodies for like a year, and now has his toughest fight away. Being away definitely doesn't help here, as you feel any close decision would have been given to him in the UK. There is no way I would be backing Smith @ 1/2 away in this anyway.
Report n88uk March 15, 2017 1:27 AM GMT
I mean judging is generally fair in these PBC cards, but it's the fact Smith now won't get any favourable decisions in his favour like you could see if this was here.
Report wisewords March 15, 2017 2:55 PM GMT
Eddie can't have much faith in him, or he'd have won this purse bid.
Report n88uk March 15, 2017 4:43 PM GMT
Hearn is just an accountant by trade. He won't lose $600k on a show just to secure home advantage.
Report wisewords March 16, 2017 2:19 PM GMT
Yeah I know he's an accountant. But he's known for "backing his fighters" and "believing" in them. If Callum Smith was a world champion then Hearn could build him up massively in Liverpool over the next 5 years. Securing home advantage but taking a loss to help this become a reality would surely have been a consideration if Callum was a fighter Eddie had 100% belief in.

No he isn't lol. He didn't even win home advantage for Kell Brook in his world title fight.

The only fighters he's ever "backed" are Joshua and Froch. Joshua was just worth a lot of money so he had a lot of money to play around with, and Froch at the time he needed to take a gamble as he wasn't in the position stable wise he is now.

He might not have been back then, but he is now. I was surprised he didn't have belief in Callum as he's supposedly "the best Smith brother".
