Starting in the next hour or so. On the face of it, Vargas is quicker, faster, more skilled and should be too good for the limited and inexperienced McDonnell. However, Vargas's record is a bit padded and he has never fought anyone really top-notch, and his power is overrated. Neither of theese fighters have a really hard punch, but both have plenty of stamina. this leads me to believe that the fight will go the distance (some bookies were offering evens). Mcdonnell has been pushed up the ranks very quickly at an advanced age, trying to emulate his brother, and has improved a lot since he was outboxed by leigh Wood 3 years ago, before catching up with the badly flagging Wood in the later rounds, winning the British title in the process. The super bantamweight division is pretty weak and Vargas has manged to avoid any of the better ones, and for this reason I give McDonnell a chance. If he can drag Vargas into the later rounds, with the crowd behind him, he could get a surprise result. I was caught out the last time I predicted a "hometown special" or dodgy draw in a Hearn promotion fight, but this time, It could be a possibilty, as vargas is not as good as Linares, who beat Crolla so easily that a biased decision was never a realistic possibilty. I think that 1.59 is a decent price for vargas, but I will consider laying him when hsi price goes down, as I think it will in the early rounds when his superior speed and skill become apparent. It is a risk, because McDonnell might find himself out of his depth a bit. But I have a feeling that McDonnell will come on strong in the later rounds when his guts and stamina will serve him well. So if vargas' price goes as low as 1.25 or so, he could be worth laying, as McDonnell has great stamina and will respond to the encouragement of the crowd. And the result could be a lot closer than some people think. Might be worth a small punt on the draw.

They are expecting the fight to start well on schedule, maybe even before 10.00 p.m.
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 9:38 PM GMT
Vargas down to 1.42, already.
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 9:42 PM GMT
Vargas price plummetting, maybe mcDonnell is showing signs of nerves, which he has in the past. Nelson said before that he though Mcdonnell would win , but he has changed his mind. Laugh

Vargas is very tall. He has bad acne (make of that what you will Mischief)

clear 1st rd to vargas, usng his reach and jab.

Mcdonnell looks a bit outclassed here, but he will hang in there.
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 10:00 PM GMT
Vargas has a rep for low blows, so maybe this will be a factor??
Report Geesyerdosh February 25, 2017 10:01 PM GMT
Not the most exciting fight but I guess McDonnell's best chance is to frustrate and hang in there
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 10:03 PM GMT
I think Mcdonnell's only hope is a DQ for the low punches
Report Geesyerdosh February 25, 2017 10:05 PM GMT
McDonnell hasn't landed a single decent punch

Better round for McDonnell, Vargas looked a little bit dodgy at last
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 10:10 PM GMT
5th was a bit better for mcDonnell, but not enough
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 10:13 PM GMT
McDonnell is brave, but he doesn't really belong at this level. Although Vargas is nothing special.
Report Geesyerdosh February 25, 2017 10:17 PM GMT
Vargas is just too good it seems
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 10:18 PM GMT
agreed

If Mcdonnell could punch, you might give him a slight chance, but he can't. Sad
Report Geesyerdosh February 25, 2017 10:25 PM GMT
You are right Vargas isn't anything special
Report Geesyerdosh February 25, 2017 10:29 PM GMT
Great effort from McDonnell might even get a robbery like his brother
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 10:32 PM GMT
Grin It would be some stretch to give this to McDonnell.
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 10:33 PM GMT
It is going to go the distance though, evens was a good bet.

That acne does look very dodgy though. If I'm Hearn I'm getting him tested before he leaves.

You Were very nearly on the money there Des Cool
Report Des Pond February 25, 2017 11:04 PM GMT
thanks anxious, but I underestimated Vargas a bit, I knew he could box, but I thought Mcdonnell would get going earlier and make it a bit closer. had a few bob on it going the distance though. Happy

Having a punt later on Izuagbe Ugonoh to beat Breazeale, probably by KO. This kid is very raw, but he has lots of power. I haven't seen any kickboxers make the transition to boxing with much success so far, but this guy (Polish, though you wouldn't think it, to look at him Grin)looks like he could have a decent career, imo. He's not going to beat the likes of Joshua or Klitschko, but he can knock over most of the current heavyweights, imo.

5th rd, about 14 minutes before they suspended it.Grin they'l probably void bets now.
Report Des Pond February 26, 2017 3:32 PM GMT
Igonhu was very naive, made the mistake of going all out for a knockout without paying any attention to defence, and he paid the price. I've been critical of Breazeale in the past, but I have to give him immense credit for the guts and determination he showed in coming back to win, when it looked like Igonhu was going to stop him. I put a few quid on Igonhu before the fight started, so my bet wasn't voided and I lost it. During the fight I had laid it all off after both fighters had been down, but all the bets placed during the fight were voided. So, although I thought i had greened out, I still lost. A bit annoying, but that's the way it goes, sometimes. Won a few quid with the Hurd stoppage, though. Cool
