Jose Torres said you have to be smart especially in the ring to be a champion. Mayweather does what Mayweather does and if you challenge him you've got to figure out a way to stop him. Sure he makes fighters look bad. That's part of his art and people pay him a lot of money to show it.
Report RozelKid May 3, 2015 6:03 AM BST
2 great boxers, but when fighting each other their individual styles cancels each other out. I think both camps knew this 5 years ago. It has to be one of the worst boxing matches ive seen.

They both set this up as their last pay day and have timed it pefectly as being a big rumble when it was always going to be a non fight.

It was more like a jump and skipping match whilst playing tag.

Who would pay to watch these 2 fight again - only the true boxing fans i suppose.

It's sport paddle. It's about demographics and records. Mayweather fights his way and Pacman fights his. Floyd plays the fans like a ten bob banjo but they must want playing. People keep talking about boxing dying but a little perspective is called for as we've just seen the richest fight in history and there is still so much to see. If you want to see spectacularly KO artists they are out there. Mayweather isn't one but he brings the skills he has. He makes money and when he makes money we make money. Time and time again the cry has gone out that this time it will be different. Not yet.
Report paddletoe May 3, 2015 6:26 AM BST
Imagine he is impressive to see up close and he might be the greatest modern day boxer but his fights lack any drama or wow moments and tonight was another anti climax. You cant blame him for being himself and winning so comfotably but I would not pay to watch one of his fights again.
Report happyhibee May 3, 2015 6:32 AM BST
The point of boxing is to hit and not be hit. Mayweather just put on an absolute clinic in that tonight and people crab him cos it wasn't exciting. Sometimes being much better than everybody leads to gripes but it's not his fault people aren't as good as him
Report paddletoe May 3, 2015 6:33 AM BST
Bit cheeky of Manny to claim he had won the fight. Mayweather was unusually humble to Many when he was interviwed. Many should have been more magnanimous in what was as clear a defeat as you could have imagined without a knock down.
Report Eeternaloptimist May 3, 2015 6:33 AM BST
Quite agree paddle. I never pay to watch him. I think the Hatton fight was the last one I did pay for but he does help my fund to watch other boxers. There are all kinds of artists out there. Something for everybody but this place is usually quiet and he helped bring people out just to see him lose. Never underestimate the skill of a huckster. Laugh
Report paddletoe May 3, 2015 6:34 AM BST
Even if you could find a boxer as good as him would that not only serve to make their fight twice as boring.
Report Eeternaloptimist May 3, 2015 6:35 AM BST
True paddle but then Mayweather can afford to be humble if it gets him another pay day like this and it's in Manny's interests also to talk the fight up as being some kind of controversial loss.

Pity about the timing for you guys in the UK, here in Aus it started at 2PM.  A few beers down the local, free to watch and the atmosphere was great (busiest I have ever seen it).

Terribly disappointing effort put in by both, looked like their training regime is more strenuous than the fight itself.

Report Eeternaloptimist May 3, 2015 6:40 AM BST
That would depend paddle. Styles make fights. if you had a fighter of a similar style then yes probably but then again if you had an aggressive fighter who was good enough to make Floyd fight for his life then you could have a barnburner. They've said a few would be able to do so but they can't. Look at Canelo. That was the changing of the guard fight. He's back to winning ways and he outweighed Floyd by nearly two stones on the night. Still not enough. Only father time can beat Mayweather and he's elsewhere at the moment.
Report Geesyerdosh May 3, 2015 6:40 AM BST

I was all wrong on this...perhaps i was expecting too much from Pacman, obviously you cant just swarm over a guy like Floyd because you wont have a lot left in the tank after a while but to me it was clear Floyd was the quicker one here...Manny caught him with a good combination in the fourth round but it was like he didnt have the intensity nor the energy to jump all over him and knock him down, perhaps Manny from 2009 would do exactly that but clearly the fact that it took this long for the fight to take place had given Mayweather the upper hand.

Im a big Pacquiao fan but i have to admit Mayweather won this fight fair. He is a more dirty fighter then Pacman and there were a few cheap shots but he is clearly the best in doing what it takes to win a boxing match. Perhaps not very entertaining for some fans but you have to respect him for being a grandmaster in his own style which is a completely legitimate way to get a boxing match won.
Report Westender May 3, 2015 7:03 AM BST
I was ridiculed over the past month by mates when I stated that I would never buy a PPV and thought this fight would be a stinker.

Floyd has a long history of stinkers so I am not surprised.
Report Supernando2010 May 3, 2015 7:22 AM BST
I also think this "careful agressiveness" from Pacquaio was the worst approach they could possibly make. You cant outbox Floyd and you also cant knock him out with one punch. Tyson said it very well that Manny would have to get dirty if he wants to win this because there is no other way. He should have made a high risk brawl out of this fight from the first minute with accepting the possibility that he might get knocked out himself.
Report ZEALOT May 3, 2015 7:47 AM BST
If you have never boxed its probably boring but if you have boxed you cannot help but to admire how easy floyd makes it look. We see manny can hit good fighters so easy & so many times, he could hardly land a clean shot on floyd. Give the guy credit as you wont see his like again for a long time.

EXCELLENT POST .

SUPERNANDO .

that was not a stinker mate , that exhibition of boxing was one of the soundest I have ever seen .

It is called boxing not fighting , and as they say a good boxer will always beat a good fighter .

FLOYD MAYWEATHER Jr in my opinion is the most elusive boxer in the history of the sport . As stated earlier , a 'GRANDMASTER' Of his profession.

personally didn't think he was as good defensively as in prior fights
and it was always going to be a pts win in his favour when the two were left standing after 12

TBE

He is having a laugh!

To be fair he is a smart guy and to quote a " Pugilist Specialist" but he stinks the place out. I would never pay to watch him fight. People forget Duran fought against Middleweights. I remember watching the Mickey Ward Arturo-Gatto fights and Barrera- Morales epics. The truth is Floyd is an excellent boxer and dedicated to his profession but TBE and All Time greats fight whoever wants to take their Crown.

You can't knock his Ring ability and I know he beat Corrales and Castillo but in my book he didn't take on all comers and to be TBE you have to fight the best when the gauntlet is throw.

Oh and as defensive boxers go try Jack Johnson!
Report Hound-Dog-2 May 3, 2015 11:19 AM BST
Floyd has the technical skills to change his style to adjust to his opponent. Hardly 'the fight of the century', didn't live up to all the hype, more like a dancing match at times, but Floyd is exceptional.

Who knows if Mayweather actually believes if he is the TBE and frankly who cares. I don't think anybody who knows and loves boxing would rate him that highly. When it comes to us boxing lovers some will have him in their top ten and some won't. That's no disservice to him. It just shows how tough it is to rate the guys who have claims to being the greatest of all time. All the guys at that level had great skills but many others had genuine KO ability but what really sets them apart is their willingness to test themselves consistently against the best.

Roy Jones set something of a template for Mayweather to follow but even he fought some truly great fighters at their best and didn't chisel them with demands which sapped their ability to show their own best.

Smartest of all time?

Maybe.

Greatest?

Not even close in my book.
Report bardo May 3, 2015 11:47 AM BST
i thought the size difference was a big factor.

Floyd has a reach advantage of 5 inches and is also 2 inches taller

Pacman just couldnt get to him as Mayweathers movement meant that he is so hard to hit.

it made it hard for Manny to turn it into a brawl as all floyd had to do was pick him off and score

There wont be a rematch. Thats that folks

Not for sure no zealot. I'm the first to admit it's speculative and subjective. We have enough trouble identifying who is the best P4P now let alone in history. The subjective issue is massive. Fighters now guard their 0 like a nun does with their chastity whereas in days gone by they fought so often that with other front line fighters and many others not so good they could have an off day three or four weeks after gutsing it out in the previous fight.

I certainly don't hold losses from those days or indeed now against a fighter if they are shooting for the stars but names I'd throw into the mix in no particular order although I'm not suggesting they are definitely better would be the following. One other thing I do generally tend to allow a certain amount of time to settle on a career before making a final pronouncement and I find it highly likely that Floyd will rise. However:

The daddy - Robinson.

Bubbling under - Armstrong, Duran, Pep, Hagler, Leonard, Sanchez, Greb, Leonard, Wilde, Louis, Gavilan, Walker, Leonard, Wilde, Jones, Ali.

And doubtless others.
